 | Forum Thread | Where does Chair sit now? at 03:25 6 Nov 2025
Yesterday, post-match, someone perceptively noted that our present run of bad form coincides with the return of our veteran play-maker. It's true that Ilias seems to be playing the same the same type of game, with similar on-field responsibilities as he had prior to his injury. The problem is most of his team-mates, and his coach, have changed. The question is should he — can he — alter his game to suit a younger, faster, group of attacking players? If not, should the present team set-up change to accommodate him? |

But wasn't his "tinkering" (ie: willingness to try different players/formations etc.) a significant reason why he was hired? As opposed to having the same players run the same patterns game after game with mediocre results. |

Maybe he's not being allowed to do enough? For example since Chair returned he's taking all the the corners and offensive FKs. When he was injured that job fell to Madsen who was at least as good, maybe even better. Wouldn't it make more sense to split those tasks to make them less predictable? |

I get the "if not now then when?" stuff, because I said as much in his write ups at the end of last season, but it always made more sense to me to start with a senior keeper (if not Nardi then A N Other) with the aim of easing Walsh in for the second half of the season once we're up and running. So Ben Hamer between the sticks until January then? I mean this does seem like a significant problem, as Nardi's confidence is totally shot, and his anxiety is spreading to the rest of the defence like a virus. [Post edited 4 Nov 17:37]

I guess, like many of us, management were counting on Walsh taking over the #1 shirt. It seemed as though it was his time, as he'd shown the ability in his few outings until the K.O against Preston. Following that his injury only compounded the issue. Was it bad luck, bad planning, or a bit of both? [Post edited 4 Nov 16:54]

Result aside. It was, by some distance, the best World Series I've witnessed. Over the past decade or so my interest in baseball had flagged. Too many other sports, too many other things still to do in a life that has fewer years ahead of it than in the rear view mirror. I gotta say the past few weeks have changed that. Roll on next spring eh? |

IIRC Koné did have fallow periods among the torrid ones at Wycombe. He's come a long way in short time, maybe that has something to do with it. |

I noticed it at the time and the clip confirms it Just look at the gap between our three-man wall and our other defenders and keeper. Is there any defensive scenario at all where that could be intentional? |

Oh yeah. I understand why you would walk the best hitter the oppo has in a tight regular season game. But, you're also walking the guy on base ahead of him, so almost any ground ball out of the infield scores a run. You're also telling to the batter at the plate that he's a weak link, which is likely to piss him of just a little bit. Not a good idea in the sixth game of a World Series. |

Rats! It's easy to second guess but the Jays should never have deliberately walked Otani. It just pissed off the batter behind him. |

He did. I'm devastated that I didn't see him then. [Post edited 30 Oct 18:57]

Apparently he wasn't particularly good, or interested, in baseball until he was 14 when he went to a summer baseball camp. |
