Yes, learned so much and there’s so much detail outside of the matches themselves about the players. It’s brilliantly researched. The Charltons dad missed the semi-final because he wouldn’t change his shift down t’pit. Players wives weren’t invited to the post-final dinner and they were greeted by a bumper crowd of 6000.

Highly recommend the series on Colombian football through the narco era if you’ve not listened.

Hayden has made phenomenal money in his career for a bloke who hasn’t achieved a lot nor has much ability. Orient is local enough to be more appealing than a Championship offer up north he may have got for a bit more dough. Nothing against the guy but I’m not expecting it to go brilliantly and he’ll retire young.

English/British bookmakers admittedly but we’re slight favourites. 17/10 to win in 90 or 4/5 to qualify best prices which surprises me a tad. 9/1 available on Bellingham first goal but that varies wildly between bookies.

Very odd watching it live while half asleep. The way Embolo flung himself over I assumed he’d suffered another freak injury. I was at the Augsburg game where he did his ACL. Strange win for VAR through their umpteenth update of how they use it he gets a second yellow only because the referee initially booked the opponent. If the Swiss are capable of serious anger I imagine he’s getting the Beckham treatment as they’d played really well to get the equaliser which had been coming.

An irony of sorts that Argentina progress in no small part thanks to one of their players finally getting harshly done by the officials.

Listened to an excellent episode of the ‘It Was What It Was’ football history podcast on this recently. There were a lot of bad fouls from the Argentinians but England committed something like 31 so not exactly squeaky clean. Rattin may have not known he’d been booked as he had no way of communicating with the referee. Also could have been sent off before he was. The ref never explained exactly why he sent him off when he did.

He had Aeros thrown at him by the crowd and it was the first time he’d seen aerated chocolate, which is nice.

Not sure I’d have Varane as first choice even with the current players only though I appreciate he splits opinion and some really rate him. Assuming we’ll be 4-4-2 you have to be at least quite good at everything to play in midfield and he’s not even quite good at most of what it needs. Perhaps would be closer to that if he hadn’t been looking for a move from about five minutes after arriving.

Enjoyed his interview where he had some oars on the wall of his back room

Thought Courtois wasn’t great for the first and Lammens obviously a disaster for the second. Spain trundle on.

I guess from an England point of view it’s a good thing. Spain more likely than Belgium to beat France who we’d ideally like to avoid in the final :)

I don’t think anyone doubts the kid has potential and the goals per 90 stat is a good one but he’s also scored nine league goals total. I know people who know people who know people who know Mavis in the canteen who say he’s a great guy, loves football, desperate to just play etc etc. but at some point after however many managers not really fancying him.

He probably has been badly advised which isn’t his fault up to a point as a young man but it’s not like we’ve got a potential Taarabt/Eze on our hands. He gets on board or he doesn’t. Probably needs a fresh start to have a chance at realising that potential.

The bloke up front whose name I’ve forgotten now wasn’t fit. But the guy who came in for him against Canada looked handy and scored so was surprised he didn’t start.

They dealt with the first half well. Dull as anything but it makes sense to try and get to the second ad break and nick one late. Was a bit bizarre how they just seemed to give up. Maybe France are just that good, maybe they were knackered but the big players didn’t turn up at all.

I like Charles a lot but it’s an odd situation. You’d think City have some sort of assurances about his playing time. There are worse problems to have.

As a fan, give me Paraguay’s attempt at France over Morocco’s any day. It was like watching 14th-placed QPR in an April dead rubber losing meekly to 13th-placed Bristol City. Hit someone, stick a big bloke up front and go long. Try anything but little passing triangles 40 yards from their goal when you’re 2-0 down.

We’ll need someone to play right-back for the final 87 minutes regardless.

They dealt with it comfortably enough on Sunday but I’m sure it took a bit out of them probably balanced out by the extra travel for the England team.

Risky to make any changes other than Spence presumably in for Quansah but I wonder if he’ll take Anderson out who hasn’t been great and give Mainoo a go for some fresh legs. We’re more than capable of winning the midfield battle. Saka isn’t 100% but I reckon he gives him an hour again.

Skewed slightly by three of our four yellows the other night not being for fouls.

My guess is they don’t fancy him and he’ll go if/when we sign someone better with Salomon on the bench.

Looking back at the Argentina highlights I don’t think it’s as bad as it seemed at the time. We know how ridiculous VAR is but our betters signed up for it so you get ridiculous things happening that pre-VAR nobody would have thought about. The Salah ‘foul’ is your typical big Prem player throwing themselves over at the most meagre contact. Egypt lost their heads and the defending for the winning goal is awful. Left themselves wide open at the back with the full-backs pushed right up. The big centre-half is dragged wide and doesn’t do enough to stop the cross and the other one does next to nothing while Fernandez gets a free header.

Saying that, Argentina are on 22 fouls per booking.

It’s so bent. ‘Light touch’ all tournament but not light enough to give the Egypt goal but just light touch enough to allow the winner to stand.
