3-5-2. Is it the way to go?
at 10:18 25 Aug 2019

There was such a huge boost in terms of the defensive solidity of the team yesterday when Toni Leistner was inserted between Hall and Barbet in a three man back line that I would love to see this formation used regularly. We’ve got the players too make it work, with two natural wing- backs in Manning and Kane, two strikers who complement each other beautifully in Wells and Hugill and talented ball players like Eze, Chair etc to create the chances for them. I really think it could be our most effective formation.

Ashes thread

Now that the World Cup’s done and dusted we can turn our attention to the next major event.
For me the most interesting questions about team selection are;
1) Do we open with Jason Roy? For me it’s a no brainer. I know all the arguments against- he doesn’t even open for Surrey, he struggles against the moving ball etc- but I feel that he’s in such good form and the alternatives are so mediocre that it would be silly not to. If he does come off he could give us control of the game in the first couple of hours. Him and Rory Burns for me.
2) Now that Jofra Archer has to have a place in the side, who are the other two quick bowlers going to be. If fit I guess Anderson has to play and I would give the third spot to Woakes but this means no place for Stuart Broad and the 90 mph+ Mark Wood.
3) Which spinner to go with - Ali or Rashid? Ali’s batting form seems to have dipped but it’s still not an easy decision to make.
Any thoughts?

A team to be proud of.
at 10:32 1 Nov 2017

I actually felt at the end of the game last night,as on Saturday, that for the first time in ages, the fans actually have a team they can feel really positive about and be proud of supporting. They may not be the most technically gifted set of players we’ve ever had but they give absolutely everything for the cause and show a level of commitment we haven’t seen for a long time. All credit to Ollie for instilling this degree of team spirit and to the players for carrying it through onto the pitch. As Clive said in a recent report, it’s disappointing that more R’s fans aren’t making the journey to LR to give their support because for me it’s definitely the most enjoyable football I’ve seen since the Warnock promotion season.

Poor old Rafa

Most of the Grauniad's match report of last night's game is devoted to telling us how hard done by Benitez feels because he was only allowed to spend £45 million of the £75 million they raised from selling players last summer and how he felt he needed a few more expensive acquisitions to make automatic promotion a certainty.
You'll have to excuse me if I'm not feeling overly sympathetic to his "plight".

Deserves a thread of his own I think. If everybody is singing the praises of JET and Fer (which they fully deserve), I don't think he should be left out as he had a truly excellent game. Defended better than any of the others and was up and down that wing putting in crosses like a player ten years younger.
Henry and Toszer, on the other hand, were absolute dogsh-te and if Ramsey ever starts with that combination again we will know for sure that his judgement is seriously lacking.

No Strikers

Surely, just as worrying as that abysmal "performance" tonight, is that with Austin and Mackie both injured, we now face the prospect of going into our forthcoming games without any strikers at all.

Probably best not to tune in to the horror show that's taking place at Lord's at the moment. England 25-3 against the Kiwis.

Four Year Plan sequel-suggestions for the title

For me the blindingly obvious one is "The four year clusterf-ck" but I'll bet the brilliantly inventive creative minds on here can come up with some gems.

Can Martin Samuel sink any lower?
at 08:04 23 Feb 2015

Having finally stopped writing a-se licking articles about his great mate and hero Redknapp, today this apology for a journalist decides to do a hatchet job on Chris Ramsey, mocking his use of young players and omitting to mention even once the joke of a manager who is responsible for us,Ramsey and the club being in the desperate situation it is. Sickening.

Harry paid till the end of his contract ?
at 00:09 6 Feb 2015

I know it's in the Mail and it may not be gospel, but tha article in there this morning on Sherwood's possible appointment says Tony Fernandes "still has to pay Harry Redknapp for the remaining six months of his contract",
Do people think this is true and if so WTF. He walked out of the job because he declared himself unfit to do it. why should he leech another penny from our club ?

Could it be the slowest midfield and attack ever fielded by us? (or anybody else for that matter).
Just a thought.

Villa game-a Must Win.
at 04:49 22 Oct 2014

I know you invite any amount of scorn and piss-taking onto yourself by declaring any game to be "must win" at this stage of the season and it obviously isn't in the sense that if we don't get 3 points we will immediately be relegated.
The consequences of failing to win next Monday could however be pretty dire. With Chelsea and Man City next up, the chances of getting any points from those two, while not impossible, are pretty remote. That would mean that if we were still on 4 points after 3 more games we would very likely be 8-10 points adrift of the 4th bottom club. Unless all the teams immediately above the drop zone lost all their next 3 games which is possible but pretty unlikely.
A gap of that size would mean we would have a hell of a lot of catching up to do in the "winnable" games that would follow.

Valbuena going to Russia?
at 07:21 31 Jul 2014

Somehow the news that it now appears likely that Mathieu Valbuena is now most likely heading for Moscow after all ended up on the Mauricio Isla thread so I've started a proper one to see what people think.
The report says that the Russian club are making him a fantastic offer of 10 million Euros over three years and he was unimpressed by the counter offers made by us and West Ham.
If this is true I think we've missed out here on getting a truly exceptional player. 10 million Euros sounds a lot but over 3 years it amounts to around £51000 a week-with no transfer fee. We are paying some of our mediocre players more than that.
I'm not saying we should start throwing money around like before but is this a case of us being too thrifty for our own good ?
