Defending is awful but goal keeping coaches?
at 10:45 19 Sep 2020

I agree with this. Sometimes they don't come for balls in the six yard box that look to me like they're the keeper's ball. And it looks like the defenders have cocked up but maybe it would have been easier for the keeper to gather it/hoof it out than for the defender to defend in the six yard box.

It hadn't occurred to me that it may be the goalkeeping coaches but this is a possibility.

A keeper who defends his area must give so much more confidence to the team. It significantly cuts the amount of work for the central defenders.

He didn't say we were racist but by saying he was disappointed by us not taking the knee, it was implying that we were not wholeheartedly behind equality which is so far from the actual truth. There was no balance about what we have actually done rather than just the gestures made.

I must have missed all of the post-match bit as I went out, so missed the bit about all the stuff we have done. But really they should have said that in the first place. It's like those apologies you get on page 32 of the newspaper.

They made a big deal about us not taking the knee Brian at today's game and at last week's game against Forest. The implication was that we were somehow implying that we were not aligned with BLM. The pundit, Jobi McAnuff said how disappointed he was as if it showed we were a racist club.

It was the usual sloppy journalism with no balance about how we are unusual in the number of senior black coaches, DOF, BAME owners as well as players in our club. I would imagine Les will be steaming, given the number of interviews he has done about the lack of black people in football management.

I think the club should complain to Sky. The way this was presented was appalling.

Other clubs transfers - summer thread
at 11:31 18 Sep 2020

I think we did start to wonder when they were signing Sandro with half a knee. And the farce with Samba, is he Rangers or isn't he? And Cesar AND Green.

Obviously we have some (often armchair) fans who will always expect us to be signing the latest fashionable striker, whatever his back story. But a lot of us are actually preferring bringing on our own young players and eking out the ageing years from players like Rangel and Cameron. If I were Forest I'd hate the half-arsedness of some of their players the same way I did about Traore, Wright Phillips, Kranjcar and Assou-Ekotto.

Is Gaeten Bong still on the books? Signed in January 2020 from Brighton as a left back so likely on Prem wages. I doubt he'd sign a six month contract. He's also not got a squad number but they could be paying him.

He must be on a hell of a whack having signed for Forest as a free agent. Maybe he's the type of loan deal we'd get at the last minute in the transfer window when Forest are forced to pay a large chunk of the wages. He only got two goals and three assists last season however so may be a waning talent.

Would be fun to have someone who so desperately wants to play for us though at the right price.

Championship salary cap
at 16:40 17 Sep 2020

I should imagine there are lots of ways to minimise income tax though. For instance, paying a larger proportion of salary as image rights and then assigning greater value to image rights overseas, thus not attracting UK tax. Not sure if that's an actual thing, but it's the kind of dodges they'd make.

Like cafe Nero not having paid corporation tax in the UK for ten years. And the Mrs Browns boys actors getting paid offshore. It's all 'legal' but hardly ethical.

The thing is though, you don't lose your job for not winning in the EFL cup. Whereas a manager is almost certainly getting the sack for poor performance in the league.

The Defence: A Thought
at 18:59 14 Sep 2020

I think I agree with you regarding defending from open play. There must be a certain amount of ability to read the game and natural sense of positioning. But I do think you can coach people to deal with set pieces better: corners and freekicks but also throw ins.

Also when playing against particular teams, does an attacker always cut in a particular way? Who do we need to double up against? Do they hook the ball over the top? Where do the wingers like to cross from, the byline or the beginning of the penalty area etc. Sometimes it seems like other teams are better at neutralising our threats than the other way round.

But I also think that we have rarely had a settled defence over the last few years and that makes a massive difference. If Dickie, Barbet, Kakay, one of our goalies plus whoever is playing left back play four fifths of this season's games together, I belief that alone could seriously improve our goals against stat.

If Liverpool are the Kop
at 13:14 13 Sep 2020

Yes, we used to be like this with Redknapp and Hughes. Tons of players but eg. no left back and no real thought if they can play the way the manager wants them to. It's such an expensive way of running a club.

We're now trying to have at least two players in each position, a combination of youth and experience, a couple of utility players who can play in a couple of positions, creative players and solid, reliable, more physical types, even some taller players to balance out our usual shortness. It's so much easier for the players and the manager.

Just checked and his contract runs out at the end of the season. I'd rather throw a bit of cash in extending his contract than Manning's really.

Pleasing though that we got our first clean sheet in our first match of the season, when last season it took us until December. We also scored twice which is a relief when I was worried that the goals may dry up after losing both Jordan and Ebs. Dykes looks like an absolute handful in a Glenn Murray, annoying to play against, kind of way. And Kakay seems to be our solution at right back, which I thought would be a problem and he cost us nothing. Meanwhile Wallace had his best game for us in my view. Early days but plenty to be pleased about.

This has continued the tradition of opposition teams fans saying we're one of the worst teams they've come across when we've beaten them. This happened loads last season.

Warbs talks lockdown form, signings, contracts and defence – Interview
at 08:36 11 Sep 2020

'Speaking exclusively to the Guardian, the Queens Park Rangers manager said: “I was really angry about how it came about. We were set targets and achieved every one. The size of the squad was down, the average age was down'

I wonder if this is a bit of a clue. His comments about his time at Forest when he was sacked. He may feel a bit concerned about history repeating itself. He's doing very similar here and may be hacked off at coming under pressure, largely from the Twitterati. He knows that our management are influenced by the fans in terms of sackings.

I really can't believe that they're turning against him and we haven't even struck a ball yet in the league, finished in one of our best places for a few years last season, definitely played some of our best and most entertaining football in years and blooded a load of young players. We do have a lot of delusional fans, and at least one delusional owner, so I understand his tetchiness a bit.

Interestingly our current manager seems to be able to work even having just had a knee operation. Funny that.
