I was having an argument with a pal of mine the other day. The point of discussion was a game we were both at in the early to mid sixties. The 'Dale were attacking the Church Inn end and were awarded a penalty. The taker stepped up and blasted the ball over the bar, over that low shed like stand at that end and out of the ground ! Rumour has it the ball ended up on the Church Inn bowling green.
My mate says it was Reg Jenkins, I say it was Laurie Calloway.

I think it was Calloway, he was a biggsh, broad and pretty strong guy and he had a tremendous shot.
Anybody remember the game at Spotland when he was playing on the left hand side of midfield for I think Shrewsbury Town towards the end of his career ? A corner was cleared to him standing about 25 yards out from goal. He met it with a ferocious left foot volley that bent the ball into the corner of the net and it wedged itself between the net and the stanchion ! No arguing wether that went over the line, the 'Dale goalie had to punch the ball out to get it free.
What I don't understand is why he was taking the pen in the first place. We had Jimmy Thompson, Dave Storf and Big Reg, all good penalty takers playing at that time.
Needless to say he didn't take another pen for ' Dale. I can still feel the disbelief that a pro could miss the goals by so much ! I've seen Hornets players not get a conversion from in front of the posts as high as that. | | | |

Reg hit the roof of the Sandy with a penalty taken against Walsall in the early 70's. It was a night match and the penalty came in the last minute - a bit like Hendo at Fleetwood - the difference being that we were 1-2 down and vying for a place at the top of the old Div 3 (League 1) at the time. The Observer always posted the same mugshot of each player taken pre-season and used ad infinitum throughout the season. Can't say I recall the penalty miss but I have cuttings from the Ob of manager Tony Collins contemplating using Calloway as a centre forward. Remember going to bradford park avenue, getting a free kick about 25 yards out. Reg took the kick and as the bradford formed a wall reg hit it like a thunderbolt. The number five stood stock still and the ball hit him slap bang in middle of the forehead.the ball flew skywards and the centre half was poleaxed. Stayed down for abou ten minutes. Moral, dont mess with big reg. | |

According to this link he didn't actually sign for us - Wolves loaned him to us and then forgot about him for four years. it was only discovered when Blackburn wanted to sign him:
