I for one have no sympathy for them , they knew what they were doing and ignored us and many others , even acting the bertis big balls , then mocking Blackpool , who saw the future of their club and did the honourable thing and fought against it. Don’t particularly want to kick poor Dave when he’s down but can’t agree with his statement about Gigg.
If a potential developer can demonstrate a “pressing housing need” then there’s every likelihood that the ground will go, regardless of covenants etc. And the longer the ground is empty the more likely that possibility. |

Agreed, if councils and developers can push through building on green belt then they can certainly get round a covenant for an unused football ground if it ends up that way. |
Its a brownfield site, Bury council will grant permission to build on it in preference to allowing building on greenbelt. |  | | |

What a strange feeling -- I certainly didn't think the day would come where Bury were expelled from the football league, whatever the views of those of us who think 'financial doping' is wrong.
I've resisted commenting even though Dale's rivalry with the Shakers is quite personal for me (my family moved from Dale to Bury when I was very young and I grew up and went to school there -- fun in the mid-90s!)
I want to gloat but I can't really bring myself to. Instead I've just got this feeling of gratitude towards Dale in general and Chris Dunphy in particular. Because surely the only way to avoid the dire straits in which Bury found themselves is if the people running the club know how to (awful term, soz) 'manage expectations'.
You might routinely sell your best player in January, derailing a promotion bid. You might sell another to avoid a tax bill. You might have to explain away endless 'undisclosed fees'. You might agree to pay the wages a 35 year old, one-time Premier League striker wants. You might sign George bloody Donnelly.
You will get scrutiny. You will get absolute pelters when you sell a player. There will be talk of 'a lack of ambition'. there might no 'ride to enjoy'. Your club might end up stuck in the same infernal division so long they start to name it after you. You might never take some 'too good to be true' money just to go up. You may get no thanks whatsoever for paying the bills on time.
And when you have the good grace still to have a pint with a few away fans on a long trip down south, and you can try to explain it all, and show that you are just trying to keep the club on the rails for the next generation, then surely you are the epitome of a successful Chairman.
So thanks to Chris Dunphy, and thanks also to the current board and all those involved in running our club. Today just seems the right day to say that. There by the grace of God etc.

Totally agree with your sentiments Ken. I think this is a tragedy not only for the supporters and town of Bury,but for Lancashire and football in general. Sure we love to take the piss out of each other on derby days,sing silly songs about our respective towns,but they are the highlights of the season,bigger than average crowds,each hoping for bragging rights till the next time we meet.
The EFL do have to shoulder a lot of the blame,obviously their character assessments,or whatever they call it,has failed badly here as it has at many other clubs and this should be a watershed case to make sure the likes of Dale and Day never have the chance of sucking the blood out of other vulnerable clubs who live on shoestring budgets,Dale are one of them.
I`ve seen many games at Bury,as I`m sure many people on here will have,saw them in the Second Division in the Sixties when they had a good side,Bob Stokoe as manager,me and my dad going on the bus. Saw Newcastle beat them 7-2,saw Brian Clough play his last game for Middlesbrough when he did his knee crashing into Chris Harker who later helped Dale to promotion. Saw great players like Colin Bell,Alex Lindsay and potentially the best of them all,Jimmy Kerr,a Scots lad who sadly had to give the game away at just 19 years of age.
A few on here will love the fact that Bury are now history,but parochialism apart,they will be missed,twice this year and into the future,no more derby matches-ever. Football in Lancashire will be for the worse for their demise. |
As a schoolboy I used to go to Bury and/or Bolton if I couldn't get to Spotland (on the bus). In the 1960s I was at the last game of the season. BWFC were at Charlton and needed a win to have a chance of promotion (they lost 2-0) and Wimbledon were beginning their rise up the Football League and were at Gigg. Wimbledon won 4-1 and I can still remember one of their goals at the Cemetery end and I was standing at the half-way line opposite the main stand. I also went to a night game when BFC played Chelsea. Tommy Docherty went to see Bolton's Wyn Davies who was scoring lots of goals but he was marked out of the game by Colin Waldron who he signed instead!!
As far as I am concerned it is just as much a disaster for us (and all the local football league teams and football in general) as it is for Bury and their supporters. We've lost around £70000 in gate receipts this season - times this over a number of seasons and we are talking a lot of money which we badly need
Only the most biased and ignorant Dale supporter will be happy at what has happened. Hopefully they will be able to do a Wimbledon and get back in the Football League
We should thank ourselves luckly that it is BFC and not us who have been taken over by people who don't give one jot about the club and its history - who mortgage the club, take out loans at massive interest rates, spend money they don't have and owe millions to local companies, hmrc and Bury Council
If nothing else the EFL should be 100% reorganised so that never again can people like Day and Dale be allowed to own a football club | | | |

Football supporters don't have a say in club ownership, unless they have a shareholding themselves. Instead of crowing about Bury's plight, we need to be thankful that we've been fortunate enough to have responsible owners, chairmen & directors in recent years. Without that we wouldn't be in the relatively stable situation we are in today. Those of us that remember Tommy Cannon know that it could so easily have been different.
Personally I'm very sad to see Bury go - they were always my Mum's family's team & we've enjoyed decades of rivalry & jokes at each others expense, not to mention all those great derbies. I will miss them. | | | |

It's not just the current board and Chris Dunphy we should be thankful for. I was recently looking at either the 64/65 or 65/66 division 4 league tables. It was the year that Dale finished about 6th. The amazing thing about that table is out of the bottom 13 clubs that year 12 have left the league either temporarily or permanently, all with bigger supporter bases than ours. It's a minor miracle where we are today, and not often commented on. It should be. With the exception of one or two years in the 80's ever since the days of Fred Radcliffe we've been very fortunate with the quality of our boards. [Post edited 28 Aug 2019 14:46]
