Obvious ones like up the dale and give us an r,etc.

Back in the late 70's and early 80's when you could move from the sandy to the fence next to the away end im sure i used to hear the french national anthem, was that a mirage?

... in an era when such things were seen as acceptable at football matches.

Hughes' irritating celebration was much more recent.

Aye.
As was his near-criminal assault on Peter Kurucz.

We seem to have an ornithology problem on here with birds!

It's the eye of a sparrow. The wings of a crow. There is no mention of the bird that does the actual shitting, indeed the words suggest it's the singers that do the shitting over the bastards below below. If they could fly.

Poll: Who do you think bury should appoint as their next manager?

Sorry R17ALE, but the second line is:

"If I had the arse of a crow"

hence my reference to the species that does the shitting

Full verse:

If I had the wings of an eagle
If I had the arse of a crow
I'd fly over bury tomorrow
And shit on the bastards below

I'm gonna have to pull seniority here, because even if other versions are available, that is the version it should be!

I've got a different recollection:
If I had the wings of a swallow
And the arse of a bloody great crow.

Funny how we all remember differently. Perhaps we were all singing different versions!

I think its a generational thing - looking on U tube there are different version but back in the 60s folks like dalian and me always thought big.

Dont think wings of a sparrow would get you far, fast.

And yes the arse did belong to a crow!

Correct. Having the wings of a sparrow just wouldn't support the weight of a crow's arse, especially a bloody great one, as moth says

No, no, no, well certainly not in the days that we were in the same division as Burnley, as the chant definitely went like this...

If I had the wings of a sparrow
If I had the arse of a crow
I'd fly over Burnley tomorrow
And s**t on the b4574ds below, below
S**t on, s**t on, s**t on the b******s below, below!

I always thought the second line was "the dirty black ar$e of a crow", but time has dulled the memory.

Whatever it was it was more original than that "To the Championship we're on our way" rubbish these days!

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

A quick google shows I wasn't alone and also every version on here is mentioned.
Back in the day a wall of noise coming from the Sandy with every one of us singing something different.

Barry Haslam and a few other wags used to take the Michael out of the same copper who always used to patrol behind the goal at the Sandy Lane End;
Who`s that fella with the helmet on,Dixon,Dixon,
Who`s that fella with the helmet on,Dixon is his name,
On the beat all day,on the wife all night,
Who`s that fella with the helmet on,Dixon is his name.
The copper always took it well, always had a big grin on his face, though I wouldn`t have fancied being ejected by him, they didn`t pussy foot around in those days!!

The first time I remember hearing songs at a match was at Tranmere in the 50s they were singing
I hear the sound of distant bums
Over there over there
And do they smell
Like ......... Hell

To the tune of Distant drums by Jim Reeves

Distant Drums wasn't recorded until 63 so it must have been later than you think..... And as I know that its frowned upon for me to correct a Daley I shall make a sharp exit

The Rochdale Division, it needs a new name.

That song gives me goosebumps just typing it.
