I'm trying to lighten the mood with another nostalgia thread.

What was the first pub that you all went in, legally or illegally?

With me it was the Red Lion which was on the corner of Newgate and Lord Street, more or less on the opposite corner to the Wing Wah.

Me and my mates were about 15 at the time. It was a proper old fashioned boozer. No music, no fruit machines. Frosted glass on the windows and a heavy door. Deadly quiet.

It must have been early evening and the place was empty. The landlord must have known we were underaged because we all bought our own drinks and plumped for dark mild because it was the cheapest! I think that it was 1/10d for a pint.

I left Rochdale to go to uni and when I came back that part of town had all been demolished to make way for the shopping centre.

I understand The Moorcock in Littleborough was once a nightclub did any of you go there if so what was it like? My first drink was in my local, landlord didn't mind us drinking underage if we took our glasses back and there weren't too many of us

Aye, James, it was a nightclub up until the late-1990s/early-2000s. It was the place to go on a Friday or Saturday night after the pubs shut, as was The Fish up at the Lake.

A bit further up from The Moorcock and back down Blackstone Edge Old Road was another club called The Lydgate. That's now a small residential hamlet.

My first pub was the Royal Oak in Littleborough, but like so many others it is "currently dead".

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Rake Inn at Littleborough was a good pub. Spent some time in there when Jim and Mary Gorse ran it back in the 70s/80s.

Always good for ATs.

The fish was my first pub, and I'd been going in for 4 years when I told them I was celebrating my 18th, the moorcock was a greasy steak egg and chips place before it was a late night venue, they used to run a minibus up from littleborough

The Rake is a Tapas now, regularly frequented by a former messageboarder.

My first pub? The Galleon on drake Street. I was 17 but probably looked about 13! My mates and I made for the darkest corner of the pub, hoping that the landlord, who always wore cheffing atire, wouldn't see us.
We always sent the oldest looking person amongst us to get the round in. If anyone remembers, the inside of the pub was covered in fishing netting with nautical artifacts dotted around the room. And yes, once again, we all supped mild as it was the cheapest available.
On a side note, on leaving the pub one late afternoon, we decided to go to San Remo's, the cafe further down the road on Drake Street. Whom did we meet and have a coffee and chat with? None other than Phil Lynott and Scott Gorham of the band Thin Lizzy. They were doing a gig at Champness Hall later that evening. Phil was a very humble and approachable person. Happy days!

Yep, turn left at Gauxholme arches (if coming from Littleborough) as though heading for Bacup and there is another turning after a couple of miles that takes you to where it used to be.

In the mid 70s my missus worked at The Butchers Arms for the landlord Bert Kay.
Bit of a taskmaster but a great guy to work for.
His wife did all the cooking but very rarely saw her. Her hotpot was to die for.

As you say, stayed there till all hours and somehow managed to drive home to Rochdale.

I don't remember any pool tables in there but could have been before Bert arrived or after he left.

Last time I passed, 12 months or so, it was still open.

By the way my wife's not Scottish......but slightly bonkers!

First regular boozer I can remember going to was the New Inn just past Owd Betts. It's a Child Nursery now, having been Nutters and an Indian in between.

Me and my brothers liked it as it served Bass Special, no-one gave a shit how old anyone was, and the fruit machine had a skill feature where you could win extra nudges!

I'd have been about 15. Mum was the taxi as she didn't want us drinking in the Lancashire Lass in case the neighbours saw us!

Thumbs up for Fitzo for The Star. Had a rank pint of mild in there before the 3-0 Northampton cup win.

As for the Butchers. It was run in the late 1990's early 2000's by the wonderfully named Lee Beer who had previously run the Blue Ball in Norden. He couldn't do enough for the Dale walkers to Halifax for the Tractor Fund circa 2000 providing grub and refreshments. It's still there.

Poll: Who do you think bury should appoint as their next manager?

Bay Horse on Oldham Road was my first pub. Use to go in with my uncle who lived 3 doors away. I was about 10 yrs old.

Also went in the Princess Royal with my grandfather, again at a young age.

First pub for a pint was Blue Pits in Cassy. Use to go in there underage, unknown to my mum.
Just as well it was a John Willie Lees pub because in the words of Wandering Walter (those who did the local clubs will know him) I didn't want to go home smelling of beer!

The Princess Royal on Freehold Street before it was done up. In the late 70's I remember the excellent Oldham Brewery Bitter and Mild on handpump - a proper back street local, full of characters , a hard pub but you felt comfortable there as long as you behaved.
Sadly it is no more.

A bit before my time, but there was the Richmond, which became the Candy Peel which in turn became Spibs.

There was The Homestead I believe which was near to where Heywood industrial Estate is now and the Seven Stars which had a night club which later became Rumours.

Twenty Five years ago after a night in Heywood you had the choice of Downstairs in the Vic, Spibs, Chamber House, Soho's, The Basement and Rumours.

These days you'd struggle to find 6 decent pubs!

It was the Candy Peel. - as it was my first time in any drinking establishment it was like an amazing new world with girls dancing around handbags, drunks falling over and fights at the end
Happy memories !!!!

PS :Anyone remember the social club at Birch hill - Some great nights there especially if there was a party in the nurses home or doctors res.

My first pint was in a pub in Trefriw, Wales. We were on a Geography field trip from school. Thought we would chance our arm at getting served. The barman insisted we drank in the room downstairs, obviously knew we were underage. The second night we were in he came down to us all and told us two of our teachers had come in to the pub and he shoved us all out the back door.
My first pint in Rochdale The Roebuck not long after the field trip aged 15. I seem to remember it was known for underage and that's probably why I ended up in there
