Will schools do a "Coventry"? 16:35 - Feb 21 with 3043 viewsD_Alien

In 1971, with one or two exceptions, most schools in the borough let kids go at lunchtime to attend the FA Cup fixture

I guess there's a different ethos these days, but wouldn't it make sense for schools to do the same on Wednesday? I don't have kids of school age now, but rather than parents trying to sort out an arrangement with their school individually, i wondered if there was any mechanism anyone might know of whereby an official approach might be made on behalf of all parents in the same boat... or coach... or whatever?

There is live tv, we have a govt obsessed with attendance statistics, so I reckon no, though I have heard of one school taking several pupils

It really is - and if one school can do that (on educational grounds, no doubt) it would be manifestly unfair for others to impose sanctions on parents

Attendance is an Ofsted measurable statistic, many schools will refuse to give permission for kids to miss a day for a football match and may well get a cob on with parents who take their kids out of school for a day.
" Headteachers may not grant any leave of absence during term time unless there
are exceptional circumstances"
"Parents across England who take their children out of school without permission will face a fine and can be prosecuted, even if their child has a high general attendance."

I guess it depends if the Head is a football fan.

If it's a school organised trip, it will be classed as an attendance, if it isn't it wont.

I think someone posted on an earlier thread that you're 'allowed' a certain amount of unauthorised days off (around 20?) before a fine becomes an option. I don't have kids myself but I'd hate to think any might miss out on such a special occasion because of parental fears over over-zealous headmasters/mistresses!

It'd be interesting to see how a court of law would interpret those rules (which i think most parents will be aware of) if push came to shove, given that at least one school is taking kids to the game

I know challenges haven't worked in the past, but there were different circumstances involved, i.e. parents acting on individual grounds with no school acting in a way which would prejudice the issue

It's a cup replay, most Rochdale school children don't support the Dale

For the school taking some of their pupils, it's not a cup replay it's an educational visit

The rules are never about one offs. As said to DL1 the other day, you need to rack up ten absences (5 days) which are unauthorised for it to be an issue, and they don't unauthorise them unless there is a problem in the first place (eg evidence of truancy, holidays in school time or history of poor attendance). Missing a one off day will make no difference to anyone.

It's still a cup replay, and my point is I'm sure most school children in Rochdale don't want to go, for young children that is a very late (school)night

Thanks Col, that's good to know

I'd hate to think of anyone being penalised for taking their children to Wembley, irrespective of whether the kids supported Dale or not

If they do fine the parents for taking kids out for 2 sessions (Weds Afternoon and Thursday Morning), do they get some kind of compensation next time the teachers go on strike over some petty argument? Just wondering

For the actual Coventry game, as schoolboys at a small place the other side of Heywood, we unsuccessfully negotiated early release. A slightly more deferential society back then. We therefore booked a taxi and arrived in time in the Sandy to see Denis Butler score the winner. Scenes to use a modern phrase!

They get 13 weeks a year holiday too and steal highlighters for home use as well.

Lazy sods, each and every one of them.

You should witness it, it's an eye-opener

Laze around, do nothing, the Friday before they go back they scribble a bit of planning onto a post it note and that's about it.

They have classroom assistants who do most of the work for them too.

Half a day off a week to eat biscuits and gossip
Extended lunchtime
Start late
Finish early

Get to go on trips to the zoo and class it as work Normally on strike if somebody dare to say they should do a bit more.
