Poll: Greatest Ever Dale Game

1
Match thread: MKDons on 18:53 - Feb 22 with 3263 viewsboromat

It now throws up some selection headaches for Wigan and Spurs. Which game do you put the focus on?

I think Spurs will be a very different line up anyway possibly with more pace Inman and Rathbone to come in possibly Done upfront. Play on the counter.

But I don't think we can play the same team on Saturday either Wiseman is probably going to start but we probably need a few more to come in and freshen it up.

Poll: What are we more excited for?

Look at it this way....if MK Dons are so bad then they're nailed onto go down. One less for us to overhaul if they're in freefall.

We do have to win these six pointers though....Bury, Walsall, Northampton, Blackpool, MKD.

There was a season a couple of years ago when we hardly drew a game. Won or lost them. I remember Hilly saying at the time that we needed to convert the odd goal defeats into draws. He's partially got it right!

We've already played MKD twice (and taken just a point off them). We can big every game against the bottom half up as 'six pointers', 'cup finals' or whatever but the opposition will have exactly the same attitude and know that a defeat or even a draw for us will all but end any hopes of us staying up. Would dearly love to be wrong but I think we've just left ourselves too much to do.

I think he was referring to games we've already had where we should've done better. I didn't go to the Bury game but Blackpool, Walsall, Northampton, and MK Dons all definitely fall into the frustrating category of games we quite easily could've (and should've) won if we'd only upped our performance a tiny smidgen or we'd avoided a couple of stupid individual errors.

It is impossible to hear properly in the Sandy, it’s that loud. Don’t forget two directors told the Trust that they’d go around the ground to assess the different levels of volume at the next home game after their meeting.

What was the result of this?

My ears were bleeding in the Pearl St on Sunday - couldn't hold a conversation with the people sitting on either side of me. However that's nothing to Hill's comments about 'staying away'. How stupid to attack the faithful few that are the bread and butter of the club. Mr Dunphy needs to have a strong word.

I only just saw the link on Facebook from BBC Manchester radio where Hilly made the comment, "if you're bringing anxiety to the players then don't turn up" he just can't help himself can he?

do you think he would listen? He has got a 5 year contract we cannot afford to pay off. Hills strength is talking, not listening.

Particularly like 'Rangers' balanced view "The fat cooont has gone right up his own arse since he grew that ridiculous beard. Perhaps a relegation will humble the prick".

It's been a bizarre season, make no mistake (a roller coaster as many have said including James last night). Great cup run, some dreadful football and some Keith Hill football. A curate's egg. I hadn't given up at that point (MK), but after the Fleetwood game, I first started to doubt we really had the mental toughness to turn it around. Very happy my doubts were unfounded. We still may not stay up, but it won't be through lack of mental toughness or we would have capitulated like our neighbours have. We have what it takes, but we need to keep this run going.

Even if we complete the great escape, it cannot disguise Keith Hill has had a nightmare of a season in terms of recruitment, use of personnel and tactics. Add to that the pitch debacle and the general apathy from the club towards the supporters and it has been a season to forget. To say anything else now would be hypocritical.

The cup run and Spurs home result are mere nuggets in the silt.

I’ll be as happy as any other Dale fan if we stay up, and I’ll enjoy the run in now we’ve made a fist of it, but I hope it’s been an educational season for our manager in what has been his first bad one in charge of us.

I’d love to hear an honest appraisal from him at the end of the season. Hopefully, once he has no ire to deflect or morale to boost, he may be a little more honest about some of his choices this season. I’m not interested in berating him on here, I’m just interested full stop.

Would agree with that wholeheartedly, with the additional comment that I think that I read(I listen to very few KH soundbites) a comment that he described himself as still learning. I try to stay away from KH's personality, leadership and the other often divisive issues he raises as they don't wind me up like they do others, but how he gets the players to perform and the results he gets are obviously critical. One positive this year is he hasn't lost the dressing room at all and the players are still putting in the effort. I would also love to hear that appraisal. It may be something I would actually bother to listen to.

Edit - one other comment - recruitment in the January window has been much better than the summer.

There's a snippet of an interview he did on Manc radio after Friday's Shrewsbury win admitting pre season was'nt right? Hopefully if we get out of this mess we can come back stronger for it.

Interesting. And could be productive if lessons have been learned?

The first lesson still hasn't been learnt, that he's made mistakes too. I appreciate he mightn't want to say so in public, but even if he admits his own errors of judgement privately it's not good for the players to continually hear they're the only ones who're fallible

He was questioned about pre-season at the fans forum, on the back of the "We're Ready' Are You?" posters displayed around town, and asked "Are we really ready?"

He needs to stop making jokes about what "gets him excited" - which some people fall for every time in a "good old Hilly" kind of way - and address those issues which meant the pre-season was a largely wasted opportunity

We were ready, he and his squad weren't

My comments were related only to recruitment lessons, but acknowledge it's tough to recruit new players "knowing" they will gel with the team and fit in. He's either been lucky or inspired in the past doing this and unlucky or poor last summer.

I have zero expectations regarding learning other lessons. Maybe I don't demand enough, but I tend towards "it is what it is". By default, CD must either be on board with it or give him free rein. Probably why it goes over my head in the most part.

I pretty much agree with that, but baulk at his continual shifting the blame onto players, which in itself doesn't facilitate the best spirit

I agree 100% with that too. I also think we've made some individual howlers this year too, which has made it all too easy for him to adopt that approach.

Your dressing room point is so important and it could prove vital in the battle to stay up. So often in relegation fights it's clear the players aren't playing for the manager and don't care about the club. Just look at our last relegation season for example. Not one member of our current squad (not the regulars at least) could be accused of not caring or not playing for the manager and the club. It could prove to be an advantage to us when competing with other teams who have players or managers who haven't been at the club long.
