They got rid of Bobby Martinez for playing too much football.
There is massive delusions of grandeur at Everton. They aren't going to trouble the top six for financial reasons, so 7th is the perfect season for them. They finished 8th despite having to change managers mid season and losing their best player last Summer.
As for footballing style, it's not like they have a history of great football. It's always been hardwork over flair even back in the old school of science days. Big Sam has his faults but It's pure football snobbery. |  | | |

I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to see an exciting team though. I think Martinez's style wasn't exactly exciting by the end and simply became passing for passing's sake.
Everton are a club that are highly unlikely to challenge at the top of the table and equally are unlikely to be relegated in the next few years with the talent in their squad. As such, it has to be exciting for the fans to go and watch every week otherwise what's the point?
Big Sam did his job in steering them away from the bottom three but most half-decent managers will be able to secure a top half finish for Everton whilst providing the fans with some football that is actually watchable.

Those delusions probably hark back to the 60s, when they really were a team worth watching. It started when ex-Dale manager Harry Catterick took over and led them to the league title in 1963 and again in 1970, with victory in one of the most exciting FA Cup finals i can recall in 1966. When they arrived at Spotland for the famous pre-season friendly, they were THE team to watch, football wise
They had a fair bit of success in the 80s too, when Lineker was in his pomp and another league title. Since then though, the well has run dry and they've fallen behind the current top six. That's why they're looking for a move from Goodison, to increase their earnings capacity. If they can pull that off, there's no reason why they couldn't break into the top six again - they have the history, and just as importantly, the good footballing tradition |  |

His public condemnation of Ademola Lookman for wanting to go on loan to the Bundesliga rather the English Championship did him no favours. It just reinforced the stereotype of him being an old-fashioned, out-of-touch British manager.

Spot on there D_A Everton are more than able to recapture past glories they are a big club not as big as Oldham but still a big club.
I still remember watching Dale match and beat them in the 1970 preseason it was an amazing evening a taster of things to come when the best Dale side sat atop the old 3rd division after an away win at Mansfield in November. I remember watching sports night (wed) with Coleman in disbelieve when the league table showing Dale top came on the screen I never thought I would see that day. | |
