But are you watching the game at home or in the pub or in front of a big screen. Or are you in Russia for the game.

Like kicking a hole in the penalty spot before the opposition's penalty.
Like barging and pushing and intimidating the ref.
Like head butting.
Like grabbing players by the throat.
Like coaching staff barging a player.

I'm glad England kept their cool and weren't bullied out of the game. Very proud of them and a true victory for the good of football that Colombia and their antics are out.

Yes, Columbia were absolute idiots throughout but my reply was to a comment about VAR being used to punish cheating that was missed. You’ve added a few more.

Trippiers from Bury but you already knew that.

Pickford stayed on his line for all the pens unlike all the other keepers so far.

Although I think VAR has been a big success this World Cup - and they have worked it a lot better than the FA Cup in England - it's still confusing me that the etiquette seems to alter each individual game. There have been obvious occasions where the ref has played on and the VAR team have intervened (France penalty v Australia) and the ref has looked at the incident on the monitor. Then there have been other incidents that have warranted a 2nd look (the Boateng challenge for a penalty in the Sweden v Germany game)( the headbutt last night and the challenge on Lingard) - who is deciding what to look at because some are really obvious.

I seem to remember that the Estudiantes ringleader was Juan Veron's father.
A nasty man in a nasty team.

He was one of their better players, a very good left winger. They had a terrific right back as well. The weren't particularly nasty but the rest of the team were a real handful who just wanted to cause trouble They weren't just like that against Utd, I remember watching them the following season when the played an Italian team in that cup and it was mayhem. Things were going on off the ball from the first minute to the last.

Maradona is apparantly upset that the ref was biased towards England.

I’ve more schadenfreude for that than for the nation whose diallect it originates.

My Team for Saturday

Pickford
Trippier
Young ( would not be unhappy if it was Rose though)
Mcguire
Stones
Walker
Loftus Cheek
Henderson
Lingard
Kane
Rashford

Debatable as to whether Rashford is better as an impact sub, but I think Sterling has had his chance. Rashford getting one of the pens will have given him a confidence boost IMO

I think you will find that England were just as bad, at least according to this Scottish site:

https://www.pieandbovril.com/forum/index.php?/topic/257410-england-v-colombia/&p

You can see other similar comments on other sites. I have read quite a few on The Guardian, for example.

I have to confess that, being Welsh, this is the first tournament since Italia 90 I haven't desperately wanted England to lose as soon as possible. Can't really explain why I feel different this time - probably the more low-key approach. I can totally understand why Scotland fans do not want England to win, but some of the stuff on there is just ridiculous. English commentators and pundits getting excited about their team winning a knockout game FFS. England were not blameless, but Colombia's antics, especially after the penalty, would have tested even my previous ABE tendencies!

I had a quick read through that and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Each passing post realising that we’ve got a massive chance of going deep into the competition and clutching at any straw they can in hope we slip up.

Really don’t hate the jocks, they like a bitter little brother, who know that no matter what they do, they’ll always be in their big brothers shadow.

A "clash of football cultures" in the words of the commentator.

Yep, cheating versus fair play. Heartening to see good triumphing over evil.

Wonder if the fella who was berating Southgate for throwing the Belgian game and was adamant Columbia would beat us will show his face? If memory serves, his theory was Columbia were better than Japan. Only when it comes to bending the rules. Japan were better at football, endeavour, quality and inspiration.

Ace.

Only just seen this, I and most others assumed Rodriguez would be fit, I was wrong. I was wrong that they would beat us but if James was fit, I have no doubt they'd have beaten us. He's their heartbeat and everything good about them. Imagine us without Kane and having Vardy and Rashford up top - completely different team.

I'm absolutely delighted we went through. On penalties too, unheard of.

Having said that, I still have my doubts, we created very little in open play, we conceded from a set piece again. The substitutions and game management was poor, taking Alli and Sterling off for Dier and Vardy meant we had no link between midfield and attack.

Sweden will be a tough test, they're defensively sound, good from set pieces and have a couple of good players. I'd still rather play Brazil, I want to see us against the best rather than the mediocre sides.

Don't agree with everything you say but fair play to you for putting forward your defence and cheers for that. I think England would have played better if Columbia hadn't played spoiler but it's moot now anyway.

Having now had 52 years of hurt, I'm really not fussed about playing anyone good before the final. I was 6 in 66 so don't really remember it with any clarity or fondness, only vicariously through reading/hearing accounts from many players, some of whom have now sadly passed away. It's highly hypothetical, but if we somehow get it all together and get to the final in a "weak" half of the draw, I'll take that every day. This may be the last time in my lifetime that we make it to a final.

As a counterpoint, was commiserating with a customer in Germany (aka rubbing salt in the wounds) and he felt England are where the Jormans were about eight years ago. Good talent and success at younger levels and it's all coming good now, so we may have success for some time ahead. Hope he's right.

Yeah it was a dive. He was ready for the touch and went down even though it didn't come. Immediately realised that it would be seen as such and made the gesture to the ref. He was a lucky boy

Great memories of our last semi final of a major tournament...if only Anderton hadn't hit the post...if only Gazza had made contact...football came home...
but the German's parked a big f@cking Audi across the drive.

Let's hope we aren't saying if only tomorrow night...

Surely Vardy should be in the run on side against Sweden. A far better striking partner for `Arry than Rashford and Stirling I would`ve thought.....?
