What are everyone’s thoughts ahead of tonight? Certainly it will prove the toughest test we’ve faced all tournament but I think we’re well capable of beating them.
They have my player of the tournament, Modric, joined by his excellent midfield partner Rakitic, but other than that we shouldn’t fear them too much. Mandzukic is playing in a different position than he does at Juve and he isn’t impressing. They started the tournament excellently but the past two matches they haven’t looked special, needing extra-time and penalties in both. Towards the end of the match on Saturday they were exhausted.
As an aside, Radio 1 just interviewed John Pemberton as he coached Maguire and Walker at Sheffield United - weren’t we rumoured to be near to appointing him as manager before we decided on Eyre instead?

Just gutted. We had the chances in the first half to wrap the game up but didn’t do, and in the end it was a fair result. I agree with 442, Kane just does not impact games when he isn’t scoring. And I don’t know how Loftus-Cheek didn’t make it on in place of an exhausted Ali in extra time.
It’s difficult to be too critical, we’ve had a brilliant tournament beyond anyone’s expectations. Still gutted though.
We would have taken the semi's before the tournament but still disappointing. Looking back at the tournament we just weren't composed enough in open play in the final third of the pitch. Most of our goals were set pieces but in the end there was no-one to pick up when Kane went off the boil. Don't buy into the Stirling causing problems argument. He didn't score, only assisted against Panama and the defense always got back to block his shots even if he had initially got past them. Overall:-
Goalie & Defense - Good over the tournament Midfield - Some good performances, supported the defense well and moved the ball forward. Alli a bit in and out of form but overall encouraging Up front - Good from set pieces but lack of composure in open play cost us. If we had been 2 up at half time last night we would have made the final.
It's fine margins at times and we were oh so close last night but they had the quality when it came to the crunch

Alli looked injured most of the game but he's still good on the ball. Kane was knackered after 25 minutes trying to keep up with Sterling who was causing all sorts of problems. Seems we tried to carry him to a penalty chance or a penalty shootout and just aren't good enough to do that.
Huge missed chance of reaching a final.

yes if befoure the tournament someone had asked how we would feel if we made the semis ecstatic would be the response. But if someone said we would go out of the World Cup losing to Croatia we would be very disappointed. We benefited tremendously from the draw and other results which might have given us an inflated view of our performance. We are still struggling to beat mid level teams (and lost to the only top level team we met...albeit in a meaningless game where the incentive was to lose).
If I was Southgate I’d buy a lottery ticket... how many other world cups have we avoided playing a top team in a game that mattered?
we rode our luck well until the semis.
