Despite being a huge fan of Gareth Southgate, I'm broadly in the camp of those arguing that we're still miles away from tournament winning quality. Of the four teams that reached the semis, we would have been down as fourth favourites on paper and sure enough we ran out fourth in the end by a hefty margin in reality.
Many of the positive developments around the England team occurred off the park rather than on it, but that being aid there are still grounds for real optimism. We have got real quality in certain positions (goalkeeper, wing-back etc) but as long as we have only 33% of England qualified players turning out in the top flight every weekend, the chances of a glut of hugely creative, possession-tastic number 10s coming through are slim.
One definite plus is that GS isn't wedded to any big names or egos, not does it matter who you play for. Expect the likes of Lewis Cook and other youngsters to feature at every squad naming in future if they show promise.
And while people are saying it might take us six WCs to get close to winning one, you could argue that it is perfectly possible to short-cut the system and win without being great all the time -- see Greece in 2004, Portugal in 2016 etc. Some teams don't even need a striker, like France in 98. I do think you need pace though -- both going forwards and in defence, and on those grounds alone i find the criticism of Sterling bizarre. Yes he was frustrating to watch at times, but he got us up the park to an extent that most of his teammates couldn't get close enough to him. An invaluable contribution.

That’s pretty much my assessment of where the England team is at, too.
The one critical area we currently lack anyone of note is the one Luka Modric occupies for Croatia. Interesting that 442 mentions Bryan Robson as a player of yore who would still cut it today, as he would fill that void effortlessly.
With the likes of Phil Foden and Ryan Sessegnon to still come through, the future does look bright overall. |  |

If me and my colleagues were of international standard, he could probably still cut it now. Unfortunately I don't think that's the case. |  |

If the likes of Bryan Robson and his closest allies had the same kind off-field habits in todays' International football that they had then, they wouldn't get near the England team. Far more personal discipline is required, more dietary and sports science is used today and the kind of 'dentists chair' behaviour has no place in todays' game.

Robson only needed to fart loudly and his shoulder popped out, his body wouldn't have stood up to today's game in reality.
You wouldn't have half the player if you took their bad habits away from them,as a massive fan of Gazza it's his mental attitude that partly made him the talent he was,sadly since his career ended it's also turned into his biggest enemy. | | | |

Why wouldn’t it? Maybe the training and preparation which we all acknowledge has moved on would have benefitted him. It’s all guesswork. All we can say is that he was a phenomenal footballer and there is nobody in the England squad who is on his level right now.
In fact sod the guesswork, we’d have won the World Cup if Robson and Gascoigne had been playing instead of Henderson and Alli. |  |
