There was no way Sir Gareth was going to take off Kane (in pursuit of the Boot) even though he was poo......would Danny Well-wide have done any better, I fear not. Sterling's hold up play was shocking and rightly subbed (it's true what Vinny Jones said midweek,if he didn't have pace, Sterling would be playing for Exeter City)

Our best chance of a goal was our defenders getting on the end of a set piece....unfortunately best chances fell to Dier,who lived up to his name.

We got to the semi’s by default. We beat 3 poor teams, lost to 3 teams and drew with 1. Dale would beat panama, compete with Tunisia and Columbia, lose to Belgium and Croatia.

It’s great we got to the last 4 but it really does mean nothing. Kane top scorer. He has been worse than Stirling all tournament imho.

Thank God its not just me! With all the hysteria about ‘how great England have been’ I thought I was the only one thinking it was completely average. The only issue i would have is nobody was worse than Sterling, the epitome of a headless chicken...

But knowing nowt about anything is the reason we all post on here. It’s raising awareness around the use of a third colour in shorts and socks trim that really matters though.

Firstly, I didn't watch the game yesterday as I had no interest in it.

As far as tournaments go I would say we've been acceptable. Acceptable, of course, is a massive improvement on recent tournaments.

Positives are:

The players actually look like they care and have re-united with the fans.

Southgate has handled the media brilliantly and kept them, for the most part, on side.

We are a young team and managed to get to a semi final of a world cup. We did this with players who were out of form/fitness - Kane, Alli, Sterling etc. We have to use this as a positive experience.

My main concern is we have no plan B. We quickly became predictable and started relying on set pieces. We need more options for when games start to turn against us (Colombia/Croatia). This tournament need to be the start of the process and let's see where we are for Euro 2020.

Dont understand why Southgate did not use the players from the squad why never played before the semi.
The whole idea of a 22 man squad is to use them and the 3rd place play off was idea in my opinion....

But there have been positives with players like Trippier......Maguire.....Pickford.....Lingard....Loftus Cheek.....

For me, we have progressed a long way from the low point of 2016. How many recent England teams would have beaten Panama 6-1? How many WC games have we won on pens? GS has laid a foundation and set a standard. We are miles off the finished article but there are a lot of positives to take away.

A bit like the conundrum Keith faces at the end of each campaign, GS now has to analyse the good and the bad and try to improve in the next campaign. He's achieved enough to date to suggest that this target shouldn't be too big for him. Fingers crossed.

My whole point as I’ve made a couple of times on here is that we are hyped up. Semi finals sounds like a fantastic achievement and in some respects it is. However, when you analyse it further, it’s not that impressive, Panama are awful and teams like that shouldn’t go to the World Cup.

We lost three times to the only two decent sides we played - I’m discounting Colombia because of James not playing, if he did then they’d have beaten us too. We played Sweden in the quarter final of a World Cup, that’s when you should be playing the big boys, not a solid championship side.

Croatia showed Henderson for what he really is, I don’t understand how he’s come out with so much credit from the tournament and you look at Belgium, topped the group, knocked out Brazil, got beat off a very good French side and then convincingly beat us. The whole forfeiting the last group stage game still irks me because we’ve beaten nobodies and suddenly this is a very good England side? The fact is, they’re not very good, just like the rest but they didn’t have the draws that we’ve had in previous tournaments but I’d still rather see us play the big boys than going out to a decent Croatian side.

Of course they could beat France today, unlikely though. The amount of space between the midfield and their defence is where Griezmann, Mbappe et al will thrive.

That's like saying Dale got to the FA Cup third round by default because we only had to play Bromley and Slough.

I think there’s been an overall improvement but I agree that the improvement is not quite as much as some would have us believe. Bar the latter stages of the Croatia game we’ve played far better possession football and have looked quite comfortable and patient in games. The 3-5-2 system also suits us and I liked the way we played it from the back. We also look more of a team than in previous tournaments and each player seemed to know their role as part of the team. No Rooney at quarterback or Gerrard as Superman. We do, however, still lack quality. The midfield needs a Modric/Silva type, hopefully a fit Lallana will help there. I agree with 442, Kane has to get in games more when not scoring. Sterling needs to also convert chances, although I do think the team benefits more when he plays rather than Rashford. Beyond the first xi there is also not much to chose from. Dier was poor and looked painfully slow and Delph, Jones, Vardy, Wellbeck and Rose didn’t show much.

What an utterly rediculous comment. How can he not deserve to win it, if he’s scored the most goals? If you are saying he has been poor, you are wrong, he’s had limited service, and it really is pointless trying to argue with someone who disagrees really, so I’ll not carry on.

If he continues "playing poorly", "not being an elite striker", is a "flat-track bully" and "tap-in merchant" and carries on scoring at his current rate for the rest of his career, every Spurs fan will take that. Strikers are judged on goals. Kane scores them. Simple as that.

There’s no dispute that he’s an excellent striker, the point above about persisting with him was for the third place match when he was clearly suffering from fatigue/injury. Totally get why he’ll always produce at club level but we’ve all been focused on this higher level now, and there’s little dispute that he’s not been enough of a threat since the opening two group games.

There’s a lot of similarities with Alan Shearer - two players who will always get 30 goals a season and score regularly at international level too. The difference right now, and it’s only an opinion, is that Shearer was a constant menace in every game, goals or not. Defenders hated playing against him. Kane needs to add that to his game.
