2-0 at half time. A team probably no-one predicted but it has produced results. In fairness to Gills they have had a few chances and Tom Eaves really should have put a header away - He is a real handful but not getting much support but needs watching in the second half

Hendo likely to have a drugs test after because he has been buzzing all over the pitch like a teenager & took both goals superbly. Gillam has also impressed and played a great ball through for Hendo's second. Just looked at the disallowed goal again and I think the keeper may have conned the ref there

Because of the extra height we look dangerous at corners and are defending them well too. It's not pretty possession football but we have been effective and that's what counts

Not over yet but I hope this is the attitude we take into future home games from the start. Praying that Hill doesn't come out in the second half to defend what we have already got - Come on Hilly - No fear football

Hendo goal disallowed after 60 seconds and then camps almost scores from a 45 yard lob. Eaves then hits the bar. Fair old opening 5 minutes

What a feck n goal from Hendo. Semi scissor kick volley for his hatrick. Don’t think MOM will be too difficult today

Did someone question the team selection earlier😀

Edit. Apparently his 1st career hat trick which is hard to believe

Ive been really impressed by Hart today, too. Any reservations I had last week have eroded.

I implore everyone to watch Hendo’s hat-trick goal at their earliest opportunity.

Hendo will get the headlines but hat was a real team performance too. Calvin, Wilbraham and Gillam were immense and freed him up to do what he does best and terrorise the defence. Camps probably had one of his best games for a while and showed why he was so highly rated last year

We attacked for the full 90 so perhaps also one of Hilly's best home games in the last 18 months too !!

Already run Hendo's 3rd goal a few times on I follow - superb

Very happy with that & we need to play like that ever time we play a team outside the top few

Hart had a great effort that hit the post as well. At times we expect too much from players. It takes games to get match fit and used to how different teams play. For loan signings they haven't been playing or probably played much in preseason neither it is even more difficult.

Good performance against a poor Gillingham side. McGahey had Eaves in his back pocket. Henderson was on fire and the tactics worked. Thought the two disallowed goal were soft.

Regardless of the score, that was actually fun to watch. Passing it out from the back and trying to score the perfect goal might look good on the highlights but it's boring to watch week in week out.

Yes, you’re right about loan players, it’s just I raise an eyebrow Roger Moore style when they’re selected over players who haven’t been playing too badly - probably why I’m over critical. Anyway, yeah, he had a great game today.

The whole team consisted of round pegs in round holes and the uncompromising direct style suited that further still.

Gillingham were poor, especially second half, but we did what we had to do and that’s what counts.

That win keeps us in touch with the chasing pack too, with some teams already looking adrift.

Look at who wasn't involved today as well, apart from the bench and the couple of cameos from it...Inman, Cannon, Clough, Ntlhe, MJW, Dooley, Morley, Norman.....it must be the one of the strongest squads we've ever had in terms of depth. Maybe there are too many players in the mix and it's why we've had such an erratic start whilst Hill sorts out his best team? I dare say Clough will be involved again at some point but what are we paying for him? Can we afford to keep him around as a squad player?

Re: the pre-match deliberations... we delivered

Everyone looked 100% comfortable with their role, and as 442 has rightly pointed out (and why would anyone criticise him for doing so?) Hendo showed today why he's been played out for position for far too long

I too was impressed with Hart. Looks composed and has a mean left foot for crosses, i think he'll get better still with more game time

The Camps/Rathbone combo shone but i won't have it that Gills were poor - they're a tough L1 outfit and had a couple of chances but we were simply better. The McGahey/Delaney combo had their work cut out but came through manfully

I hope Hilly's a happy man tonight; the fans will be and with so many youngsters coming through it's starting to look very promising

Really looking forward to the trip next week now

Clough is possibly one of the six or seven players injured that Hill alludes to?

Not shocking no, but signifies a major departure from pre-season planning. If it works, it'll be credit to Hilly for accepting he'd got it wrong, and certainly no complaints from me

As i say, conditions for football couldn't be better. We need to deliver

Absolutely a major departure. Gone was the need for every single move to begin from the back, which made the back 5 look so much more solid (McGahey was in full colossus mode against Eaves). Gone also was the endless pretty passing with no end product. Today was so much more direct and we saw the benefits that approach can have. Credit has to go to Hill for that - we started the season with a plan of how he wanted to play, it wasn’t working, and a handful of games into the season he’s completely changed it to good effect.

The front 4 were impeccable today. Two targetmen out wide really worked, primarily because Gillam and godlike Henderson especially have the energy and skill to terrorise a defence. I have to echo others comments though - Henderson showed what he can do when he’s the furthest man forwards, so it’s a bit frustrating that he so rarely plays there! Hart impressed again, he’s got the attacking intent and the crossing to make an excellent fullback.

Gillingham’s keeper was having probably the worst day of his life and it could’ve been worse. Two pretty soft disallowed goals and Hart hitting the post.

Direct attacking football? It’s what we played when he took over, during the Wembley season and our first promotion.

Yes we are getting rid very quickly, but the players seem ok playing that way and look to keep the ball when we are in the other half. It’s definitely not aimless but it is effective. There will be games when we need to keep the board and they can do that too, sometimes we’ll have to adapt during games. It’s a plan B that can become plan A.

Make no mistake, managers don’t dismiss their principles and we haven’t. No need for any self-reflection about how we might want to play, we have done it before. What’s happened is that the game has moved on, but it doesn’t mean we always have to seek to follow trends.

Full credit to Hill and his team for the change. If nothing else it’s that confirmation that we have a striker who scores goals.

It's a fact!

Sixteen career braces before today and now a hat-trick.

He's also gone past Steve Whitehall on goals scored for Dale. Up to 95 now.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

You won’t have it that Gills were poor? You won’t have it?

Arf.

They looked dangerous on the counter first half but failed to work out the best way to support Eaves up top, who himself missed two decent chances he would’ve scored in the past.

As I said previously, Reilly impressed me first half.

After the break, they switched to a negative formation and did nothing of note. Compared to the other teams we’ve played this season, I would rate them as poor today, yes.
