Ian Henderson - greatest of all time? 09:16 - Sep 16 with 7816 viewsColDale

When comparing him with the other greats, take into consideration the level that Hendo has done it at, the longevity of doing it and the influence that he has on the team, and can we drop the "one of" when talking about Hendo?

Thanks for correcting me over the year that Reg was released Pioneer.
He was indeed joint top scorer in 1972/73 with eight goals which isn't a massive tally but, as you say, he missed a fair bit of the campaign.
I seem to remember that towards the end of that season we signed Leo Skeete from Mossley and he made a goalscoring debut versus Grimsby (?). Perhaps the club thought that he was the future?
There was an item of memorabilia on Ebay the other week which was a circulated letter from Gus McLean advising other Football League clubs that Reg was available on a free transfer along with Rod Jones, Charlie Simpson and Kenny Williams.

Talking of Hendo, one of my lads remarked last night that he is apparently eligible to play for Scotland! I wonder if he was ever considered?
When he scored that sublime goal against Leeds one of the pundits on the TV highlights programme was Gordon Strachan who was the Scotland boss at the time.
Did it ever cross his mind to give Hendo a chance given the paucity of forwards that he had to select from?

Leo Skeete was brought in for the last three games of the season and scored a goal in each game the first being Grimsby as you indicated. We had made top of the league in October that season, then got beat at Grimsby 1-0. I remember that because I got beat up by a bunch of grimsby knuckleheads on my way back to the coach!

Injuries started to accumilate and we had no depth. Jack Howarth returned to Aldershot allegedly because his wife couldnt bear it up north and Bill Atkins was brought in to replace him. Atkins had often been a thorn in our sude playing for Halifax, who were probably our biggest rival at the time....just ask Moggy...he hated them!

By march we were at risk of falling into a relegation fight but a few good results made us safe and Leo Skeete was given a run in those last three games. It was evident to all that Dick Connor was for the sack at the end of the season despite having kept us in the division comfortably (no last game heroics needed). All the noise from the board was about going for youth which was used to justify freeing Reg. A youth coach was brought in from a neighbouring club To replace him as manager, who was out of his depth, way out of his depth (hmm you would think we would learn our lesson) and proceeded to have a record breaking season of hell! He was actually a nice bloke, had time for anybody but hadnt a clue about winning games in division 3 as it then was. Poor Leo scored 9 goals in a team that would have struggled in the northern premier league.

Walter Joyce was the new manager after Dick Connor. I'd left Rochdale by then but I know Dave Seddon (does anyone remember him?) says that Joyce tried to play him at left back "despite me not having a strong left foot like Laurie Calloway". I wonder whether Dave S might have prospered more with careful handling. His non-league record (not at left back!) was something like 1,000 games and 100 goals.

Difficult to rate any individual in that seasons team - it was a real mess from start to finish. But if he played 1000 games in non league it suggests he didn't generate much interest at higher tiers - and he certainly wasn't a prolific goalscorer.

You're spot on with your assessment of Walter Joyce, Pioneer.
Shortly after he took over I met him at a presentation night at Castleton Con Club. Absolute gentleman and great company.
As a manager in a dressing room full of journeyman pros assembled by Connor, especially as everyone knew that his brief was to bring on kids and therefore ease those same pros out of the door, he struggled badly.
So badly that he had to go back to signing even more journeyman pros like Stan Horne and Jim Grummett to hold the team together.
I too had this feeling of deja vu when Steve Eyre was appointed.
And the same thing happened to Walter's son Warren at Wigan.

Warren is now managing Melbourne City in the Australian premier league

Warren Joyce now coaches in Australia,Melbourne City I think, owned by Manchester City. Oh yeah,Adam Le Fondre scored for Sydney City the other night in the Aussie version of the FA Cup.

Reg had a testimonial - it was a 'shared' one with Graham Smith and Dennis Butler at the end of 73-4 season - yes the season to forget, when interest in the club was at an all time low. I hate to think what they each got out of it.
There was a sponsored walk around the tops (I think the club got the buxom barmaid off Coronation street to start the walkers) and a game (v Oldham I think).

It was all a bit of a disaster and further added to the insult of the treatment Reg got.

There was no mention of Albert Whitehurst's passing in 1976 - the club were not very good at much in those years and former players were out of sight and out of mind. However in Whitehurst's case there doesn't seem to be much information available - like the precise date (as opposed to year) of his death. Anybody who scored goals at the rate he did deserved better too.

Lets hope in 30 years time we dont have have fans bemoaning the lack of recognition of the achievements of Jones and Henderson at the club.

I vaguely remember now a joint testimonal with Graham Smith, i didnt realise Dennis Butler was also part of it. Shameful treatment of 3 legends.

On reflection, that 1969 side didn't half break up quickly.
