He’s a middle of the road League One midfielder who never pushed on when it seemed that was a possibility. Doesn’t make him a bad player but he’s behind Rathbone, Cannon and Perkins on what I’ve seen this season so far, and that’s with none of the others being amazing either.
Would also say that Aaron Morley’s display v Bury was as good a game as any other midfielder has had.
Camps needs a proper spell on the bench, for his own good too. |  |

I would say from the games I've seen, his playing level has been above middle of the road in the most part, but he certainly seems to have lost some of the energy that characterised his play.
I would agree about time on the bench. I would also like to see a midfield with Cannon and Ollie in it. | |

Gillam did quite well last week but can’t really see what type of player he’s supposed to be apart from one who runs about a lot putting pressure on opponents. His awareness has to improve substantially to warrant a regular starting place. That said, others were just as bad today.

I'm willing to bet it wouldn't even be an issue if we'd got a positive result today. I'm not saying he's the answer or that he'll ever amount to anything in the game but I think it's a bit unfair to be singling out a 19 year old kid on a day that sounds like nobody came out of with much credit. | | | |

Camps is a solid, tough, central midfielder. He does lots and lots of things right.
The negatives however are picked up on and used against him.

Callum contributes to the early chance created for Alby but for Sunderland's first he fails to put a decent challenge in to stop the cross.....similar for the 3rd, does n't help Raff chasing the runner/crosser and Raff has a go at him afterwards.......body language shows frustration.

Another thing with opinions on players (though not necessarily on this thread on the subject of Camps) is that a "verdict" is passed (JW11 has fallen into this category too soon and too often).
Agree with the sentiment of this post - just like games, careers of players ebb and flow. When De Gea came into the PL most people said "who". Proven strikers go through goal droughts. Form is not guaranteed and as the world becomes more and more "what have you done for me lately", there are too many who see only binary decisions in place of shades of grey.
Like with this season for Dale, sometimes things have to play out. Not saying we'll tear it up this year or Camps will kick on, but this is no time to pass judgement. I would suggest he needs patience and time out of the spotlight and be made to fight/prove to himself and the gaffer that he can get back into the first team; that he wasn't just a product of the successful sides he's thrived in in the past. Sometimes adversity makes people stronger. I hope this proves to be the case, since from what I've seen and heard, he doesn't appear to be the big "I am" at all. | |

Camps has never offered enough in my opinion.
He gets picked every week but he doesn't get enough goals, he doesn't influence the game as he should, he can't defend and he doesn't sit and dictate the game. So I'm not sure what he does.
Compare that to Rathbone who has added goals to his game.
Or Cannon who is an aggressive tackler
Or Perkins who will sit and defend.
Camps is probably the most creative but he doesn't do it anywhere near enough to justify starting ahead of those three. |  |

He's only 22 years old and it's only a year since he had meningitis, some people develop into adulthood faster than others and the pressures on young footballers are huge.
Make no mistake, his illness will have taken a lot out of him both physically and mentally and he will have been keen to get back into the team, possibly too keen:
"Serious and potential long-term after-effects of meningitis are usually identified whilst a person is still in hospital. In these cases, follow-up care and recovery will be unique to that person.
Most people will make a good recovery from meningitis. However for many, they recover from the acute phase of the illness only to find that whilst trying to get back to their everyday activities, they experience some difficulties
For survivors, persistent headaches, tiredness, memory problems, personality changes and depression are just some of the ‘hidden’ after-effects they can experience.
Because the person seems to have visibly made a good recovery, it can be very difficult to make health professionals, family and friends understand that meningitis can still have a big impact on their lives and cause ongoing problems".

good post - I do agree with you.
My growing up comment ( although he is only 22 ) is because he has been around for a long time and knows what it takes in a mans world - even if still young in age its not really in the bonkers world of professional football.

150+ first team games,at a comparatively successful time in our history, and still only age 22. Time will tell how many of our present crop of youngsters match, or better, his record.
Too many on here and in the crowd on matchday seem to be waiting for Callum to make mistakes. Some of the criticism verges on abuse. I don't know anything about social media but I expect it is at least as bad on there.
