I can see the logic of the timing for payment. Hypothetically, someone could pass away and win the draw 2 weeks after their death, for example, under current rules.

Whilst dd is ok for people who have used it for many years, trying to get those unfamiliar with it (and who may run on a tight household budget) to convert might not be so easy. A lack of empathy for such circumstances (if I am reading it right) is a bit of a head scratcher in terms of our Directors understanding probably the majority our fanbase?

There will be one winner out of all this (Total Gaming Solutions), that's for sure! Hope the club don't suffer a shortfall in revenue on the flip side.

i have a lot of members, and not all pensioners, that would not entertain the idea of a direct debit, as like was said at the meeting with being northern we still like paying cash. I can fully understand the safety aspect that was mentioned, that if you are away and end up collecting say 3 weeks money, you could be carrying £200+, where as with a d/d its already taken care of.

Could this breaking the law if someone is entered without paying be resolved by the club paying in the money for that member? Then, simply, reclaim the money next time the agent pays it in.
Or is that too simplistic?

Trying to convert members to DD is nothing new. Dale wanted to do it 10 years but The Directors were told it simply wouldn't happen and it went no further. Many other clubs have the same idea, however those proposing it are detracted from the real world. How many of them have ever collected a round or knocked a door trying to recruit a new member?

99% of the people doing GB are not fans. They do GB to support the club and the fact a fan makes the effort to collect £1 from them every week. Ask them to convert to DD and you will get less than 2% do it.

Other clubs have tried and failed to convert members, resulting in the obvious. Likewise, many other clubs whose draws have been run by TGS have failed to even operate a profitable draw, again resulting in the obvious.

I was an agent for over 5 years in total, but I wouldn't stand a chance of converting my members to pay via DD. I feel it is a pipedream; I hope I am wrong but as Chaff says, an interesting 12 months lie ahead.

Yes a massive 12 months ahead for Goldbond. I’ve had similar interest to go on direct debit think only 3 people would think about it. I will keep pushing espeacislly with the harder customers to collect. I understand what your saying with converting them to direct debit and staying on your round. It’s just my round is just over the 60 member mark so if I had 6 people cancel for whatever reason I would be below 50 members. So unless I canvass myself I will be missing out on a season ticket. The club won’t be canvassing for agents anymore that was the impression I got.With the back pay I usually collect about £5 a week on average in back pay so if I wasn’t to charge my customers back pay if I miss them that’s about £260 a year the club would miss out on. If every agent was the same that would be a big loss a year to the club. This is why direct debit is important but if customers don’t want to convert then it’s tricky.

No TGS said it’s illegal. So unless I do my best to get everyone collected I can’t charge them if I miss them.

The rules of draws state that without payment into the society then you are not entered, what I have personally done at many other clubs and still do to this day when collecting rounds is have a "float" myself and pay in for the member and then get it back the next time I call thus ensuring they are in the draw and I have a record of who owes what. I also check with all my customers so they know this and if any prefer to not be in the draw if I miss them that week then I mark it into my walking order book.

I work on the basis of a £20 float from myself - If collecting fortnightly you will invariably miss an average of 10% so lets say 5 members per week as Dale1963 said, I pay them in and get the money back and never let anyone go over 4 weeks owed. Over a year this brings in an additional £260 but, from a personal point of view it also gives the agent £39 "interest" on their float while still having their original float money - much better interest than the banks and still doing the same amount of knocking as not getting paid

If an agent of mine then comes into the office and says "Mrs Jones has moved and she owes £4" and shows me the records they have from their walking order book I pay them back as a bad debt less the commission they have taken on it - dont forget the "real cost" of a member at Dale is the agents commission so it would in reality be virtually no risk for either the club or agent to do this but it also ensures that records are kept!

Hope this makes sense :)

Oh and forgot to mention when I posted this originally - on average I have a max of 6 "bad debts" a year in total from a full lottery from ALL my agents

Aren't the new Lottery management company going to be knocking on doors canvassing for new customers, or do they use bought lists of email addresses/home addresses which they will use as a contact means?

Goldbond has an existing customer base that should be listened to. Goldbond does need to evolve and part of this is how it is sold to new customers. The best adverts for the success of where Goldbond funds go, as I understand it, is the players it has helped nurture through the Youth system and into the first team and England U18s.

There is change for the good, and change for change sake. I fear the latter.

In fact, I once asked how far should I allow arrears to build up before cancelling and was told 6 weeks.

So it is not about the agent surreptitiously collecting commission, rather genuinely carrying out their collecting duties.

but I get home late most Fridays either work commitments or pub and often miss collection.

I always pay whats owed sometimes in / around £10.

I am sure the agent passes to the club but this thread makes me thing I have been taken out of some draws unknowingly.

I don't think you do think bad of your agent.

The club appears to have always tolerated a level of arrears without it becoming an issue.

I do not think that customers have been omitted from draws, but if they have and the cash is still taken then that is not right.

I think the "operating illegally" may be another tool to beat people into direct debit payments and ultimately get rid of agents and their commission/subsidised season ticket.
