Big clue though - Phil Stant? Never realised some of the work he's now doing in remembering many pro. footballers, (amongst many, many others), who fought and died in the 1st WW.
Know the [whole] article is a tad long but even I worked my way right through. Many footie careers either stalled by or quite abruptly ended.
And the chap that the article was mainly about - how he was released by Sunderland on his return from the Great War, got a free transfer to a Welsh club and then signed by Spurs, won a FA Cup winners medal....
...hey, have a read.

A fantastic read,it epitomised the dire living conditions of the general populace at that time and the tragedy that WW1 brought on just about every working class family. No wonder football was such a respite from the harsh lives of ordinary people,the game is an indelible part of who we are and where we`ve come from over the last four or five generations. | | | |

When you read something like that it perhaps puts into perspective why any of us can get so wound-up with football meesageboards/forums.
Know that life has it's knocks - whoever we are - but in truth we all should be more grateful with what we've got now; especially the footie at Dale.
Think though that culture's massively changed, especially since then, and very sad that camaraderie and community spirit has 'generally' disintegrated - that's easy to say through rose-tinted specs looking back. Being a fly on the wall back then might raise a few eyebrows but it was interesting that the pro. footballers were sort of press-ganged into signing up. | | | |
