Supporters are reminded that, prior to our home match against Fleetwood Town on Saturday 19th January, the Club are holding a PSA testing day.

Held in conjunction with the Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal (BKPCA), it tests for prostate cancer — a disease which affects one in eight men in the UK.

All men aged 50 and over, or 45 and over with a family history of cancer, are welcome to attend. Testing will be done between 11am and 2pm in the Study Centre, located on Willbutts Lane.

The test measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood, and around 2,000 men have been tested to date and least 100 lives have been saved by this approach.

Those being tested will be asked for a minimum £5 donation, with the Barry Kilby Prostate Cancer Appeal funding the remainder of the test’s costs.

In 2015, following his own diagnosis, Burnley’s vice-chairman Barry Kilby launched the appeal to provide opportunities for men to be tested for prostate cancer — a disease which affects one in eight men in the UK.

Initially launched at the Premier League club, other clubs from the Premier League and the EFL, including Charlton Athletic and Portsmouth, have arranged a testing day at their club. Keen for Dale fans to benefit from this potentially life-saving initiative, we are the latest to add our support to it.

Barry Kilby said: “I’m delighted that Rochdale Football Club have got involved.

“One of the problems with prostate cancer, as it was with me, is that it becomes advanced before you see any symptoms.

“This blood test will show if there is something wrong and act as the warning in the early stages. We’ve saved well over 100 lives doing it like this.

“When we first launched this at Burnley, we ran out of needles! We thought we’d get around 200 — we actually got to 400 and odd.

“It’s gaining now and it has been really successful way of getting men tested, using the football link.

“I hope as many people as possible get themselves tested on the day — I can’t stress enough how important it is to do so.”

Dale Manager Keith Hill will be amongst those tested on the day.

Joe Thompson and Ollie Rathbone recently attended Rochdale Infirmary to officially launch the promotion of the event, handing out leaflets to outpatients with the help of our Community Trust team.

In addition, thanks to our friends at the Pennine Acute Trust, leaflets will be distributed to over 500 homes across the Borough in the next few weeks.

Anyone know how long the testing takes and does it just involve giving a blood sample? Ta.

As long as you don’t feel the doctors hands on your shoulders while the test is going on you have nowt to worry about.

I`ve had a high PSA count for years, had two biopsies, but luckily no cancer detected (yet). My urologist however decided that my prostate was very enlarged,it was taking ages to have a pee, getting up heaps of times every night, etc,so about eight years he shaved about 35 grams off and since then my peeing has been good. I have a PSA blood sample done every twelve months and the odd time a finger up the jacksie, but all seems fine touch wood. I`m 70 now,so it`s just summat I`ve got used to doing.

I was in a similar position to you Dave. When I discussed the situation with my urologist his version of the story was I could also have had the ' shaving .' However if I needed the prostate removed later on if my cancer became more serious the operation to remove the prostate was much more complicated with more chance of subsequent incontinence.

Similarly if you have the other treatments on offer, radiotherapy etc, and they don't work you can't have your prostate removed surgically later.

Great initiative, recently went to see the Alarm and with Mike Peters and his wife's story with their battle with cancer, they had arrange for cheek swabbing booths in the foyer. Always good to catch these awful ailments early. well done all, and really hope everyone gets the all clear.

Just been to get tested. A good sized queue formed outside not long after 11 with plenty of people turning out so well done those involved in publicising the event. Dale directors, Keith Hill and Trust board members all in attendance to support the event. Simple procedure with no more than the tiniest pinprick in your arm. If you're still wavering about going, don't. Go and get it done.

Great advice Sandyman.

90 people tested in the first 40 minutes. That's excellent and a great response. If only 1 person is detected in time, it's been a success......

Went in about an hour ago, no queues straight in, filled in a couple of forms, quick blood sample, in and out in less than 15 minutes.

I really hope everyone tested gets an " all clear " result.

Don't think that the test is for life though guys, you need to repeat it every few years or if you have the usual symptoms.

Lack of stream, frequency of needing to urinated, getting up regularly at night to urinate, dribbling as you finish etc.

I watched that TV documentary about Bob Monkhouse last night, he died of Prostate Cancer. His pal described visiting him just before he died, the cancer had spread to his spine and he was more or less paralysed. Not a pleasant way to go. Same thing happened to my ex workmate.

Hope everybody answered the awkward question honestly

Apparently it could influence the result.

I did post the "pre-test recommendations" from the NHS website on here, so hopefully everyone will have avoided vigorous exercise of any kind for 48 hours beforehand
