I can't wait to see how our pretty useless stewards handle this one. Potential for chaos

Is it possible to have a conversation with insulting me?... thought not.

Genuine concerns have been expressed regarding safety I would expect those concerns have been fully looked into by all parties concerned in the decision. Has the decision to accommodate extra Sunderland fans put the safety of both sets of supporters at risk for a few extra quid without any risk assessment. Am I that gullible to believe that Sunderland police have been involved and that also that they will have a presence at the ground to advise GMP. Am I to expect carnage when Sunderland visit? I sincerely hope that we will not be having an inquest post match other than the outcome of the game.

edit to add … when did Sunderland acquire the reputation for violence at away matches? If this was Millwall or Leeds then I also would have serious concerns myself however I'm sure that the GMP would not sign off such a proposal if it was any club with a history for violence, If it was Oldham or Bury we would not be having this conversation.

A team doesn’t need to have a history of violence for things to go south between fans. Hartlepool hardly have a reputation for violence in football, but it didn’t stop them throwing bricks over into the TDS when rochdale fans were kept in to avoid them or the fight which ensued after.

I believe the police don’t come into a ground now unless a crime is being committed, the policing of sunderland fans will be left to stewards and if you’d seen our stewards you’d understand the unease of some posters.

I don’t think the moving of a seat is that big of a deal, the safety concerns however are. It’d only take 100 sunderland idiots to get a ticket for the 500 in the family stand and it would turn nasty.

I would be amazed if there was not a police presence in the ground, just one police dog and handler in the segregated area would be enough deterrent of itself.

It is not necessarily the Sunderland fans I am worried about. Our own hooligan element seem hell bent on bigging up their reputation when we have larger away followings, usually against softer targets.

I'm not sure it's a case of knowing more, more of an inclination to maybe consult the folk it will actually affect rather than just viewing things as purely from the club's aspect.
You'll know all about giving an opinion on things you actually know not very much about though....

From Wiki:
"Based on Surowiecki's book, Oinas-Kukkonen[4] captures the wisdom of crowds approach with the following eight conjectures:

It is possible to describe how people in a group think as a whole.
In some cases, groups are remarkably intelligent and are often smarter than the smartest people in them.
The three conditions for a group to be intelligent are diversity, independence, and decentralization.
The best decisions are a product of disagreement and contest.
Too much communication can make the group as a whole less intelligent.
Information aggregation functionality is needed.
The right information needs to be delivered to the right people in the right place, at the right time, and in the right way.
There is no need to chase the expert."

Just to add to the debate. Sunderland fans aren't quite "butter wouldn't melt" as anybody who has seen a Tyneside derby will know. However for a fan base as large as theirs they are well behaved most of the time. Having a membership scheme and rationing tickets, coupled with RAFC enforcing seat numbers will mean that any bad behaviour from either sets of finds allows the culprits to be identified. That should keep the numpties quiet you'd think. I have never understood why Dale rarely enforce "named seating" for large away support.

I go to a lot of football matches, often with friends who support different teams and have seen Sunderland away 3 times, twice in Championship. As we know, they are passionate about their team and usually travel in huge numbers tickets permitting. I have drank in pubs before the games with them and generally they are a tough but fair bunch, easy to chat to but I wouldnt like to provoke or antagonise them . The thought of a few Burberry clad Rochdale skooligans chancing their arm against Sunderland travelling army is pathetic , they would run a mile after a few long distant taunts. I would fear for the safety of any Rochdale yoof if they thought they could mix it with these fans, but then again maybe a couple of them getting a good pasting would teach them a lesson ?

Wouldnt take Sunderland fans much to act up like bertie big balls. And given the proximity to home fans without much segregation and our totally useless stewards I think its a joke to put them in the Pearl st. Sandy all day long , get more in and let them out Willbutts lane end after. Turnstyles for main stand can be used at Pearl st end of ground to keep fans from standing together in a queue to get in.
I have zero faith in both the police and stewards to contain any trouble whatsoever.
These extra 500 wont make much more money but 1200 in Sandy and easier to control would make more if thats your aim!

To quote kel, i’d rather nail my foreskin to the floor than go in TDS.

There would just be as much moaning if the sandy was taken, as there is now.

Comments on here during and after our trip to Sunderland at the end of September were overwhelmingly positive about their fans. Felt perfectly safe drinking with them, as you say

You're absolutely correct to identify the issue as our own idiots; they just can't help themselves and will feel their dubious manhood threatened by rival fans in the same stand. The problem is the vast majority of Dale supporters who might get caught up in between, even with more (and more expensive) stewarding

Families with children, elderly adults, or peaceful able-bodied adults for that matter, deserve better than the club putting them at risk. And make no mistake, that's what the club is doing, in collusion with so-called responsible authorities. Even the increased possibility of confrontation will be enough to put some people off attending. Was this put to the club (i.e.David Bottomley) by the Trust, and if not, why not?

Absolutely spot on, D_Alien.

For what nett gain? After all expenses are deducted - VAT, SAFC commission, extra staffing, not to mention any unquantifiable contingency liabilities as a result of actions on the day, loss of goodwill, potential loss of home support on the day. The game was always going to be lucrative in terms of a profit. Are we really that desperate for about £5k more?

Poll: What is it to be then?

Surely this could all be put to bed by David Bottomley saying in his next diary he will sit at the end of a row in the block closest to the Sunderland fans to show how confident he is in the contingencies the club has put into place, and how safe such arrangements will be? By putting himself in the front line of any potential trouble, his gesture would be irrefutable proof that there is no risk whatsoever. And he could lead by example by showing that moving seats is no biggie. He'll even be able to bring a mate to a game for free too. Win-win-win.

Up the Dale - NOT for sale!

Also a serious question now, if trouble does happen and someone innocent gets caught up in it and find themselves in a situation where they have no choice but to retaliate are they going to be in trouble with the authorities?

This is all a mess, doesn’t seem worth half the hassle..

Having taken the trouble to exchange my ticket today the chances of the ‘ Dale Yoof ‘ getting anywhere near the Sunderland fans are very slim if at all ,except for the odd single seat those being displaced will be offered seats in block Z the opposite end to the Sunderland fans

surely there is more financial gain than 5k any thing less than 25k from extra Sunderland fans would negate the trouble and extra expense. the figure of 500 extra away support has been mentioned but if they are given the whole of the away stand plus extra pearl st seats I make it 3700 in total how many seats did spurs and other big games attract bearing in mind there was often segregation in the away stand anyway.

This is not the time for bickering.
