Gary Bowyer said the linesman thought it was a corner (when Bradford miss the supposed sitter seconds before the winner) - then he said the goalkick was illegal anyway because players were in the box and the ball was touched by the Oxford player in the box from the goalkeeper's kick out (the camera cant see this). What is strange is the ref disallowing the goal after talking to the linesman - then changing his mind again after talking with the 4th official. A bit of a disaster from all the officials really.

The 'goal' should not have stood.
Laws for taking a goal kick -
1. Procedure
-  The ball must be stationary and is kicked from any point within the goal area by a player of the defending team
-  The ball is in play when it leaves the penalty area
-  Opponents must be outside the penalty area until the ball is in play

There were 4 Bradford players in the area when the goalkeeper 'took' the goal kick, so the ref should have ordered a retake. The ref spotted the lino with his flag up as they were about to kick off and presumably was informed of the facts - although this should have not have been necessary. The ref then informs the Oxford captain, who feigns a near collapse, he is giving a goal kick and not a goal, and walks towards goal pointing for a goal kick. It then cuts to the near touchline - it is difficult to see if he is consulting the other lino (why?) or the 4th official (why?). He then allows the goal. Ridiculous!

Further on the law states:

'If an opponent who is in the penalty area when the goal kick is taken, or enters the penalty area before the ball is in play, touches or challenges for the ball before it has touched another player, the goal kick is retaken.'

As the Bradford players did not challenge for the ball the goal kick was OK as long as the ball left the penalty area.

I believe all the officials were consulting for about 5 minutes after the Oxford goal as they were not sure what the correct interpretation of the law was in relation to the sequence of events. All a bit of a mess!

You're dead right.

I'm wondering now what is the point of having "Opponents must be outside the penalty area until the ball is in play" in the laws at all. As you have spotted, they can be there when the goal kick is taken. It is only a problem if they touch or challenge for the ball before it has been touched by another player.

I suppose historically it was to make it easier to enforce players being ten yards from the ball, although the distance from the edge of the goal area to the edge of the penalty area isn't uniform.

It will change next season as the ball doesn't need to leave the area at all before being played again.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Great. Thxalot. I do try to keep up to date with the laws - unlike the majority of commentators and pundits on the telly :)

Sorry to steer the thread back to the original topic but will I be able to buy a ticket for the rearranged game?

I would think so. You didn't actually need one in advance for yesterday as you could have bought one at Accrington.

Yeah, you can't pay at the turnstiles, but you can at Accrington's ticket office.

We have a bounce game at Fleetwood today, so at least some competitive action before Saturday.
