Bolton Players Refusing To Play Remaining Fixtures 15:35 - Apr 26 with 33750 viewsSandyDrum

Incredible that it has actually come to this.

For those without Twitter:

“The mental pressure has affected some people to the extent that they feel they are unable to perform their jobs sufficiently.

“These are unprecedented circumstances and are affecting every aspect of our lives, placing great strain on ourselves and our families.

“During this time we have remained patient in hope of some explanation but information from the club has been extremely limited and very confusing. What we have been told changes constantly.

“With deep regret we have decided not to fulfil our remaining fixtures unless we are paid.

“We understand that this will disappoint our fans and for this we sincerely apologise.

“We realise this may be seen as drastic action but we feel we have no other options left.

“This decision has not been taken lightly and is not a reaction to this one particular incident.

“We have suffered numerous issues this season, and recent seasons. Brought on by the mismanagement of this club.

“We have been operating in a near untenable environment for some time and it is the accumulation of these issues that have resulted in our decision.”

Usually the more you earn the higher your expenses. I’d bet that someone on £5k a week is going to have a car , mortgage, credit card bill far greater than anyone on £500 a week.

Whatever your income level if it suddenly dries up you’re going to have problems. I can’t believe the players have taken this long to strike and hopefully it sets a precedent.

I take your point.

If I earned 5k a week I wouldn't need a credit card surely?

Also I think it was 30 points Luton were deducted!!!!

I'd factored in higher living expenses

With short playing careers, footballers on incomes at least 10 (TEN) times the national average would be pretty stupid to have living expenses at a similar level. Setting aside at least 25-30% minimum would be simple common sense, although that could be tied up in some form of savings/pension scheme

I agree with their actions in refusing to play, on principle, but not due to any false sense of financial sympathy

EFL says Bolton "must fulfil fixtures"

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48077182

How are they going to make that happen? Play the (presumably unpaid) youth team or what?

Good question. EFL coming up with another useless, ineffective response.

The players now need to stick to their guns, continue their strike action and see what happens. The EFL need to show some balls. Deal with the off-field problems properly, to allow the on-field problems to resolve.

If the EFL allow the takeover to the intended, potential owner they can accept responsibility for everything that follows. Utter shambles.

Cashback or reward credit cards make a lot of sense for anyone regardless of income as long as you don't spend more than you can pay back.

You’d be surprised. The need for credit for someone on a higher income may be different to the average joe but it’s still there.

I work in financial services and the people I see with the likes of a Coutts silk cards earn far more than £5k per week.

I’m not doubting they’ll Have some money set aside. But any IFA worth his salt is going to get the footballers money working for them. Their money might not be very liquid and easily accessible to pay their bills.

Anyway all speculation from my part and they may all be fine. Still, not being paid to work is a big no no and more players (and non playing staff) should take the same stance as the Bolton lot.

Definitely - my friend used to work at Mercedes Manchester and more or less every footballer he dealt with he persuaded to take their expensive cars on high interest finance deals - even though every one of them could have paid cash in full.

I recall us playing and beating Aldershot 4-0 at the start of 90-91 season Hilditch scored 2 on his second debut (I think). Aldershot went bust that season didn’t they?

Hilditch, Holmes, Ward (2)

Aldershot went bust in March 1992.

Over 50% of adults in the UK have less than £1500 of savings. Disposable income has been spent on Sky and mobile phones and loans. There are approx £35Bn of PCP car loans that people are paying off each month and never owning the car. No wonder the high street is goosed.
I have little sympathy for anyone earning £5k a week who cant pay their bills, as ever, its the office staff, groundsmen etc that will be affected the worst.

Just watched the local sports report on NWT and it seems that Anderson and Bassini are blaming each other for the take over delay.
Bassini as been given until monday teatime to resolve his intentions.
Bassini said he was passionate about being the clubs new owner....

Brentwood game not going to be this week, though it will be interesting to see what action the EFL can or will take as the season apparently extends for four days after the final game of the season... Clarity of thought from the games' rulers.

I've no doubt Bassini can access and provide the money for the deal, in the same way Stewart Day did at Bury and like others elsewhere.

The real question is whether Bassini is a fit and proper owner. That's what the EFL should be considering. If this deal is ratified, it's surely only a matter of time before a bigger problem emerges.
