Bolton Players Refusing To Play Remaining Fixtures 15:35 - Apr 26 with 33865 viewsSandyDrum

Incredible that it has actually come to this.

For those without Twitter:

“The mental pressure has affected some people to the extent that they feel they are unable to perform their jobs sufficiently.

“These are unprecedented circumstances and are affecting every aspect of our lives, placing great strain on ourselves and our families.

“During this time we have remained patient in hope of some explanation but information from the club has been extremely limited and very confusing. What we have been told changes constantly.

“With deep regret we have decided not to fulfil our remaining fixtures unless we are paid.

“We understand that this will disappoint our fans and for this we sincerely apologise.

“We realise this may be seen as drastic action but we feel we have no other options left.

“This decision has not been taken lightly and is not a reaction to this one particular incident.

“We have suffered numerous issues this season, and recent seasons. Brought on by the mismanagement of this club.

“We have been operating in a near untenable environment for some time and it is the accumulation of these issues that have resulted in our decision.”

It's now been confirmed that Bolton will not have to play Brentford to complete the fixtures, instead Brentford awarded a 1.0 win. Whatever bloody next, what an absolute shambles that's been allowed to happen for years.

Is there anything in the EFL rulebook that says they can do this? Makes an absolute mockery of the game of football when an actual SCORELINE can be awarded

Is there a precedent? And has a goal - logged in the statistics - EVER been scored but not allocated to a player?

Kids running in from a schoolyard kickabout when it started pissing it down wouldn't countenance such a thing!

Farce is no where near strong enough!!

The Football League / FA / EFL should hang there collective heads in shame.

Bolton as a football club are a disgrace. Years of spending way above there means chasing the illusion a pot of gold is around the corner.

Years of spending money they clearly did not have cheating all others as they plunder on regardless of consequence.

Surviving relegation last year? How does that club feel in the final relegation spot. Its the same for any club behaving in this way its CHEATING.

This includes sides who do the same and then get promoted. Sound familiar?.

There can only be one answer and as said 100 times a 2 division relegation for any side entering admin.

Bolton could write off close on 200 million in the near future and then storm up the leagues with little if any consequence.

its fast becoming a joke.

Bassini fit for purpose?? Just how they hell did he get that one through!.

The EFL should place bolton into the NPL...
My bury mate says that would be good for bury aswell to drop into the NPL..

Q: if the game has been called off on the basis of inadequate safety personnel, why not just have it played behind closed doors?

This is the only one I can remember similar? But they still had to play the game and they deducted Middlesbrough 3 points. Today's decision may be unprecedented in the football league?

Edit - there was also the Blackpool v Huddersfield game abandoned which the league awarded as a 0-0 draw withouth re playing the game.

It's looking like it's unprecedented

The more important question is what ruling allows it to happen? Or are the EFL just making it up on the hoof(ball)?

Rule 33.2 apparently:

https://www.efl.com/news/2019/may/efl-statement-bolton-wanderers-v-brentford-upd

Thanks for the link

Rule 33.2 states:

Duration of Matches. All League Matches shall be of 90 (ninety) minutes’ duration but any League Match which from any cause whatever falls short of 90 (ninety) minutes’ duration may be ordered to count as a completed fixture or be replayed in full or in part on whatever terms and conditions the Board shall in their absolute discretion determine and shall be played in compliance with these Regulations and the Football Association Rules respectively and under the Laws of the Game as approved by the International Football Association Board. In the event of conflict between any such Rules, Regulations and Laws as aforesaid, the Football Association Rules shall prevail.

-----
This rule refers to the duration of matches, and more specifically, of matches being PLAYED

They're making it up as they go along. The last sentence of the rule refers to Football Association Rules, but i'll bet they're equally unable to be interpreted in the way the EFL seem to have done in applying an actual scoreline to this (non)fixture

If the EFL were a football club, they'd be found in breach of their own regulations and sanctions would be applied

"... may be ordered to count as a completed fixture or be replayed in full or in part on whatever terms and conditions the Board shall in their absolute discretion determine and shall be played in compliance with these Regulations and the Football Association Rules respectively ..."

Whoever had the foresight to put the phrase "absolute discretion" in the regulations got the Board of the hook, imo.

I'm not sure whether another case has been mentioned of an uncompleted match result being allowed to stand: Bradford 0 Lincoln 0 after the May 1985 stadium fire.

It's a good point about the inclusion of "absolute discretion"

I thought about that and decided that if you're going to allow "absolute discretion" you might as well not have any rules whatsoever. Or just one: the EFL can do what the hell it likes at it's absolute discretion

I'm not convinced it'd get them off the hook were one of the clubs involved to challenge the ruling with an experienced legal representative. In this instance, they won't*, but if there was more at stake, and with this precedent now set, the EFL are on very shaky ground

* if for instance, the opportunity for the other team to score more goals and therefore qualify for auto/playoffs or even more place money was denied

What was the story with Darlo when they were relegated three divisions a few years ago?

BBC Sport Report of 25 May 2012.

Darlington relegated four divisions after FA recommendation

Darlington have been relegated four divisions to the Northern League Division One on the recommendation of the Football Association.

The Quakers had hoped to enter into the Evo-stik Premier having been told by the Football Conference they would not be admitted to its north section.

After going into administration this season, the club was advised it must agree to repay debts to creditors.

However no Creditors Voluntary Agreement was reached for those debts.

Subsequently the DFC 1883 Limited group purchased the club's assets from Darlington FC 2009 Limited.

We can be inspired by clubs like Chester, Wrexham and others who have taken this journey and enjoyed great football

DFC 1883 Limited statement
That decision ensured the club, relegated from the Blue Square Bet Premier this season, could survive without repaying the debts, which remain with the existing holding company and not with the new group.

Among the teams they will face next term are FA Vase winners Dunston UTS and Shildon, with whom they ground-share.

"We had appraised all potential outcomes and have produced plans and a financial model that will work at this level," a statement from DFC 1883 Limited said.

"The focus now will be to get the football club back up through the leagues as quickly as possible.

"We can be inspired by clubs like Chester, Wrexham and others who have taken this journey and enjoyed great football, grounds with atmosphere and a rekindling of supporters' enthusiasm."

Now the club's immediate fate has been decided, moves can begin to replace former manager Craig Liddle, who agreed to join Sunderland as development coach.

"We expect to be able to name the new manager shortly," the statement continued.

"An excellent short list is in place, and now that we know which league we are in we can draw those discussions to a conclusion."

They went into admin but failed to set up any kind of repayment agreement or CVA - FA didn't like this and basically expelled them from the league. Then the club was wound up.

So they weren't technically relegated, they just stopped existing and the new club 1883 Darlington had to start from scratch in the 9th tier.

Confirmed just now on TalkSport. Will start next season with a MINIMUM 12 point deduction. Further sanctions may follow.....

Edit....... intervention by the Judge at the court hearing this morning has postponed the matter until May 22nd. HMRC are owed in excess of £1 million and the next stage may now be liquidation, meaning the end of BWFC..........a confusing situation to say the least.....
