Manchester Airport 19:27 - May 25 with 1763 views49thseason

I arrived back in the UK yesterday afternoon with my wife (a wheelchair user), my sister-in-law and my 90-year-old mother in-in-law to be greeted by utter chaos.
Having eventually negotiated the "assistance lane" (there was none) at passport control and found our suitcases, we exited terminal 2 to be greeted by a 300-yard walk to a car park to find our taxi, apparently, they can no longer pick up outside the arrivals hall. It took us over 30 minutes to walk along a roughly tar-macadamed path into the West car park which was a scene of total chaos and find our taxi. Our taxi had been waiting over half an hour and couldn't get to the disabled pickup point inside the car park and even when we eventually persuaded an attendant to let him into a quiet area, we were boxed in by selfish people simply stopping anywhere to pick up their relatives and then finding they could not operate the exit barriers.

If you are planning to use Manchester this summer and are disabled or have a disabled person in your party, I strongly recommend that you do not. The place is a shambles.

The taxi can pick you up, they just choose not to pay to park up. There will be taxi/airport firms who will meet you in the arrivals hall and will be parked nearby.

There is a taxi telephone (private hire) in the airport where you can order taxis. I believe it upsets the black cabs because it is easier to use them than a rank.

Agree that the airport is a shambles. Most airports are now. I know they're redoing Terminal 2, but terminal 1 is a dump. Security area is far too small. Being forced to walk through duty free is one of my biggest annoyances. It's everywhere though. The only way to fight back is to generously apply some of the more expensive aftershaves they have to test. Hit them in the pocket.

Apparently, this all changed in April:

If you're picking somebody up from Terminal 2, we suggest using our Multi-Storey car park, conveniently located right next to the terminal.

From 1st April 2019, the location of the Terminal 2 Arrivals car park (i.e the area to pick up customers flying into Manchester) will move to a new car park called T2 Multi Storey West. Please follow signs for 'P T2 West Pick Up Zone' which can be found on the road network surrounding the airport.
"Customers landing at Manchester should follow signs for ‘Pick Up Zone’ to reunite with friends, family and private hire companies collecting them."

There is no mention that its 300+yds and that disabled people will just have to hoof it.

I have written to the Mayor of Greater Manchester and the CEO of the airport with details of the DDA:

"Where a physical feature (for example, one arising from the design or construction of a building or
the approach or access to premises) makes it impossible or unreasonably difficult for disabled persons
to make use of such a service, it is the duty of the provider of that service to take such steps as it is
reasonable, in all the circumstances of the case, for him to have to take in order to-
(a) remove the feature;
(b) alter it so that it no longer has that effect;
(c) provide a reasonable means of avoiding the feature; or
(d) provide a reasonable alternative method of making the service in question available to disabled persons.”

Manchester is a bit of a shambolic excuse for an International Airport. If you have flown through Doha, Hong Kong, Singapore, or Bangkok to name just a few, you realise just how bad Manchester is. You can arrive at 6.30am on a long haul flight and just want to get through the arrivals system. The travelators are rarely switched on, the luggage takes an age, the toilets stink and the car parks/pick up is awful. I try and use the train now.

I often fly with Qatar which is a super airline. On my last arrival the air bridge operator took 15 minutes to get the plane connected. The pilot announced "something always seems to be an issue at Manchester, is as if they weren't expecting us". What must visitors think.

Do the management of Manchester Airport ever go and see how a good airport is run and learn from it?

Ken I'm afraid taxis do still need to use that car park which is a fair distance walk at T2. I'm a taxi driver and finding pick ups there difficult as I don't want the parking charges to be more than the £4 for 30 mins for the customer. I'm now waiting for my customers to contact me when they have their baggage as that can take around an hour sometimes. I then drive to the car park. Walk down to arrivals then meet them. The supposed protocol for disabled or people with walking difficulties is to go to the information desk in the arrivals Hall and ask for assistance. God knows how long this will take but I'm certain you won't be getting through with a £4 parking charge. Us taxi drivers that like to provide a proper service aren't happy with this but there's not a right lot we can do about it. If we pick you up in the departures drop off its an instant £100 fine when you get to the exit barriers.
