Women's World Cup 12:02 - Jun 12 with 10806 viewsD_Alien

Might be passing many people by but i've started watching, with the England v Scotland game. The skill levels have certainly improved and some of the passing & moving (trying hard to avoid euphemisms here) is on a par with the men's game. Certainly, more entertaining than watching the England performances in the Nations Cup

One talking point that's emerged is the US 13-0 trouncing of Thailand. Some commentators are calling it "disrespectful" that the US really went to town right up to the final whistle. I beg to differ. It's a competitive game in the World Cup - why should any sports team ease up (apart from saving their legs for the next game) if they don't have to? In my opinion, it'd be more disrespectful of an opponent to just start passing the ball around without trying to score. It's one of the bugbears I had about Hill's tenure - he stated on several occasions that he found going beyond 4-0 "disrespectful". How odd! Great to see the crowd applauding both teams off the pitch at the end

Thailand beat Cambodia 12-0 in a qualifying game, albeit not in front of a worldwide audience, so they can't complain about being hammered, and to their credit they seem to have taken it on the chin

Looking forward to the latter stages of the tournament when it gets serious. England seem competent but will have their work cut out at that stage against teams like the US

Poll: What are you planning to do v Newport

England were beaten by the much better side. I fancy The Netherlands could push the US in the final should they beat Sweden, but everyone else is so far behind them. It's hardly surprising given how long the US had been professional.
They're already a world force, but if England want to become the best then those hipsters i've just seen on the news going on about how brave they were need to get themselves down to their local women's football team and support them. It'll progress if it can generate more money and attract more paying fans. Telling edgy people who tell very funny and not at all old jokes about wimmin's football to stfu would help too.

Yeah it wasn't our night. Best team won, we played dumb football. Why did we go two up front and stick Parris up there to get starved of the ball when she normally plays out wide. As a consequence we got over run in midfield until we changed it after about an hour.

Passing it out from the back is all well and good if you have the centre halves to do it, we haven't. Our two are decent defenders but the US were content to let them have the ball all night.

Yet more heartache for England fans......we must beware of being over critical of our lasses but have to agree we do shoot ourselves in the foot. Some of our decision making was shocking.....missing the simple pass and conceding silly free kicks (don't mention the foul throw in a major cup semi!) .

I don't think it was a foul throw. We took a quick throw in that the ref had awarded to the USA, commentators got it wrong again.

Tonight the Lionesses were really poor for first 30mins.....it was like watching Dale last season trying to work the ball out from the back but having players who were incapable as Sweden pressed high up and we kept squandering possession or passing for passing sake going nowhere.....got going eventually but Sweden had taken the chances and we were done.

Sour puss Neville described the game as "nonsense"......I don't think the English players thought it was, and the eye candy Swedes certainly did n't!

Bit disrespectful there Phil........get back home and help your mum sort bury out.

Yes. It wasn’t nonsense 4 years ago, in fact the victory over Germany was a big thing for Women’s football in England. His tactics are sometimes nonsense though. It’s been a very poor World Cup for Phil Neville. It baffles me how coaches like Phil Neville and Aidy Boothroyd are a part of the national teams setup.

Glad it’s nearly over ...not something I’d pay money for to go and watch..overhyped by the BBC and press generally..cant see attendances at these games at league level increasing significantly in the long term.

There`ll be more women`s sport on telly and in the media soon than men`s and the BBC will be pushing it,as they do. Same here in Oz,the ABC go well over the top pushing the top players almost into heroine status. Yes,it`s sickening alright,I just use the mute button.

It’s almost as if that doesn’t happen with overhyped and over paid premier league players.

"Lionesses" how grating is that its England women ffs. How is it that every sport team has to be called after an animal? I blame Hornets.

This is not the time for bickering.
