Happy with that performance today with the way most of the top 4 have batted recently. Pity Buttler had a low score and I was a bit surprised he went in before Stokes. We need to make the most of this and have a lead of at least 100 as Lyon will be dangerous in the 4th innings

Good win for Lancs too

Apparently, Buttler went in at 5 because Stokes wanted to return to the number 6 spot

It's already been said that Buttler simply got a great delivery (with the changed ball)

267-4 is an unexpectedly handy position to be in with the pitch usually at it's best on day 3 and the new ball already with a few miles on the clock. Rory Burns will have dreamt of days like today, and starting again on 125 will have him waking up with a smile on his face

Bairstow & Woakes still to come. Every chance to stick it to 'em, just need to concentrate

Poll: What are you planning to do v Newport

Smith is a man on a mission. Need to find a way of getting him out in the next 4 tests otherwise he will single handedly win this series for the Aussies. Let's hope Joffra adds something new from the next test

We will soon be batted out of this test if we are not careful with a draw at best available. Need a collapse now which may happen with the new ball ( wishful thinking !!)

Not looking good, is it?

From 112-8 on Day 1 to a lead of over 200 with 6 wickets in hand

Smith looks like he wants the world to pay for every single minute of his ban, or in particular, England. He's also been acting as de facto captain in the field whilst Paine simply holds the captaincy title

To get anywhere in this series, we'll need to find a similar level of obduracy and determination. Oh, and skill

Fair to say that that England had a nightmare of a day ( although they shaded the last 7 overs !!). Perhaps the pitch will be a flat track tomorrow although I think Lyon will do a lot better than Ali who will be lucky to keep his place in the next game

90 overs of grit and application needed tomorrow

We were at least 100 runs short in our first innings, especially from the position we were in. Root as is often the case failing to convert his fifty into a ton, and also yesterday our other batsmen not having the same application that we had the previous day, is what went wrong.

If all our top and middle order batsmen show the same application as Burns did in his first innings, we should survive.

I like the BBC comment that they have found Smith’s weakness. He keeps getting out in the 140’s

Two main problems selection wise, picked Anderson when he wasnt properly fit and Moeen seems to fall apart v the aussies. Archer for Anderson and a replacement for Moeen for the 2nd test regardless of what happens today

Moeen's form, especially with the bat has been poor for a while. Leach is probably unlucky not to be playing.

I was reading the other day that Mark Wood is out of the series without bowling a ball and Archer is also struggling for fitness at the moment. Anderson lasted 4 overs. What's wrong with our quick bowlers these days ? The treatment they are getting from the physio's should be World class.
Regarding the current game we need show some fighting spirit and not just allow the Aussies to grind us down

Jason Roy doing his best to prove he isn't a Test batsman.

Fair comment

It's a balance that hasn't worked out in this match, but think the selectors will stick with him for the time being, especially with a couple of other changes due (Moeen/Leach, Anderson/Archer)

As 442 says: but he knows

Just bleeding well declare and give the Aussies the victory for this test. No point just delaying the inevitable. Why risk another play getting injured in this forlorn hope.

310 we can knock those off with overs to spare let's just go all out for the win and send them a message.

Certainly not the one you would put money on to knuckle down and bat a couple of sessions. I was listening to the first session in an airport. Have a 90 minute flight coming up and may be over by the time I land !! Not surprising that Lyon has done well. Could easily take 6 or 7 today

Any chance of rain :-)

What a brain fade. Play the situation. Him and Root were playing okay, but his crazy dash down the pitch opens up an end.

Finished at 3.12 Mark. Depending on what time your flight took off, you were pretty much bang on. Unfortunately.

Well that was absolutely spineless. Who was it said " If you put all the players into a big sack and thrashed it with a large stick you wouldn't be punishing anyone who didn't deserve it " ?

An inability to remove Smith quickly in either innings and an inability to bat to the situation cost us.

I'm worried that lessons won't be learned in time for the next test.

Same with all our sporting teams I'm afraid. When the going gets tough we fold ! We're bringing through a generation of players who have had it easy all their lives and when it come to a real scrap they haven't got what it takes to deal with it.
Football, Cricket, Rugby - we can knock over the small nations but when the big boys come calling we s--t ourselves.

We’ve just won a Cricket World Cup & our football team performed better at last years Football World Cup than they have done in decades.

Didn't we win the cricket World Cup three weeks ago?

Landed 30 minutes ago. Not surprised TBH. Huge pressure on the next game as we need to win the series to get the Ashes back. Let’s hope for a response
