Convicts win the toss and bat.

I also wonder if the people who booed Stokes when he walked out to bat in the test at Trent Bridge last year when he returned to the England team are feeling suitably foolish now?

Stokes’ innings is the best I have ever seen and think I will ever see. It had everything. Digging in at the start, seeing wickets fall around him and having to become the run scorer, seeing all but one wicket fall and having to end it before he ran out of partners, the rotating of the strike to allow him to do that and then the actual ball striking itself. Truly phenomenal.

I was there yesterday. When the two wickets fell early in our second innings I was hoping that the Aussies would skittle us out on Saturday so I didn’t have to go and watch us get bowled out after an hour yesterday. Then came Ben Stokes. The finest sporting moment I’ve seen live.

Jimmy Anderson out of Ashes

Breaks down again. Could it be the end for him in test cricket? Would be a huge risk from now on in; seemingly his body is finally giving up on him

If so, at least he went out at the top, and his record for a fast bowler may never be broken

Also, who would be left out if he had been fit? No-one would deserve that. (Edit: at least, none of the frontline bowlers)

There are two tests in New Zealand starting at the end of November and four tests in South Africa over Christmas and into the new year. He might make the South Africa tour, although I suspect he will retire from international cricket and maybe do another season with Lancashire, dependent on what else he has got lined up.

I would not be suprised if most of the 'all format players' missed all, or at least the T20 part of the New Zealand tour. It would be an ideal opportunity to blood the likes of Banton, Parkinson etc in the T20s and maybe have a look at Sibley, Crawley, Hain etc in the tests.

The only changes that I could see for the next test are Roy and Denly swapping places and maybe Curran in for Woakes depending on how the later's knee is.

Not sure I really see Roy as a top 3 test player at all. I think even the few times his county have used him for the 4 day game, he has been at number 5.

Live interview with Keith Hill and Dave Flitcroft interrupted for Joe Root interview!

Anyway, Woakes is out for Overton. Interesting change based on the Old Trafford pitch.

Looking forward to tomorrow. I agree with Stokes comment that if we don't win the ashes then his performance in the last match will not be worth as much. Clearly as a one off nothing changes about his innings at Headingley but it's up to the rest of the team to deliver

Glad Roy has been moved down to 4 although I would have preferred root to be there and someone brought in instead of Roy. Starc will be fired up for this one, but if we can see him off then I fancy our chances.

What's the weather like / predicted to be? Usually best to bat first at OT

The weather - unpredictable as ever - isn't looking too bad tomorrow & Thursday but rubbish on Friday. Then not too bad for the remaining days. I'd say there will be interruptions to play but not on the scale of Lord's

I think one of the factors the selectors will have taken into account when looking at Roy's place is team cohesion. It'd be very difficult for a new batsman to come into a series at this stage, and if that batsman was doing well for his county, the disruption to his team's chances in the Championship. Psychologically, Roy knows he owes the team and IF the top order can get through the new ball, he just might still be able to make his mark on the series

How likely will another ball be bowled today?

That answers that then.

The ECB I think need to have a think about when and where test matches are staged.

Fair enough the WC has made things tricky this summer but OT in September is usually not much fun.

I don't think much more play today but there still could be a result. 3 and a half days of play ( 300 or so overs ) could be enough.

Saturday and Sunday actually look the best bet for no interruptions looking at the BBC weather forecast.

another century

Really is Smith v England at times. I am already hoping for a draw so that it is everything to play for in the last test. This is based on a belief that if the Aussies get over 300 our batting really isn't robust enough. Will be delighted if we do win but already a bit dubious

No ball.

And now Stokes goes off injured without even completing his over. The leach no - ball, the Roy dropped catch and Aussies almost 350 for 5

Can it get any worse today ???

Deffo take the draw now

Very frustrating to watch as an England fan, especially as you know our batsmen won’t bat with anything like the same discipline or good fortune.

Our bowling attack, with the exception of Broad, has been kitten like.

Would Curran in for Butler have made a difference? Another bowling option and unlikely to get less in the way of runs.

Steve Smith Hand eye coordination is off the scale.

Poor technique if you go by the coaching manual and he racks up 200+

Denly v the short stuff is League cricket 2nd XL.

Burns marginally better they both just turn there backs.

It did get worse !! England 10-1 with a few overs left

As poor a day as you can imagine especially when you think about the high of the last hour of the Headingley match

Whoever our openers, it seems to be only about staying in. You have zero confidence they will go on to dominate the bowlers and build a big score.

Been to the game today. Fantastic atmosphere in the Fosters scaffolding stand. Banter galore with the convicts but all good humoured. Our bowling contained them early on but was not penetrative enough when the new ball was taken. The catching was definitely well below the standard required. "Catches win matches" was proven yet again on day 2.
Smith the cheat is without doubt a wonderful test batsman but he got lucky today.
Get out of this with a draw, hope our luck against Smith turns at The Oval and who knows.
