Bolton Wanderers: Doncaster Rovers match postponed over welfare concerns

BBC. Breaking news

Bolton Wanderers have postponed Tuesday's League One match against Doncaster Rovers, amid welfare concerns for the young players in their squad.

Financially-stricken Wanderers have been in administration since May.

They were only able to field three senior outfield players for Saturday's 5-0 loss to Tranmere Rovers.

"Whilst the threat of further sanctions is obvious, nothing can be allowed to impact on the welfare of such a young group," a club statement said.

"With so many senior players injured or unavailable, the squad has performed heroically."

Manager Phil Parkinson claimed after the Tranmere defeat that he had written to the English Football League to voice his concerns about player welfare.

It will come as no surprise that the blame for Bolton taking the unilateral decision to postpone their game tomorrow is being laid at the doors of the EFL.

Amazing how many clubs the Efl has forced to spend money they haven't got.

This really does show the EFL for what it's really worth a completely ineffective and gutless organisation made up of "jobs for the boys". Next time we have a couple of players out injured we'll just call the game off till they are fit. You couldn't make this farce or the one at giggle up.

This is the nail in the coffin for bury this week mind.

The EFL in deciding if they could let bury start the season now in late August with games in hand have another club who started who unilaterally say they can't fulfil their fixtures having started the season.

Bolton are in materially better shape to play their games and have - at least the semblance of a squad and a decent manager and assistance to try and help them through it.

Bolton have to play or be docked points - the logic they must be working to is to write this season off and go down, regroup under a new owner in League 2 and then rebuild the club.

The rules are:

31.1 Any Club failing to fulfil its fixture obligations in respect of any match under the jurisdiction of The League on the appointed date or dates or causing The League to suspend any fixture shall be deemed guilty of misconduct, unless the circumstances giving rise to such failure are outside the control of the Club and could not have been reasonably foreseen or reasonably anticipated and remedied prior to the match. Every Club shall carry out regular and appropriate maintenance and checks to ensure that its safety certificate is not suspended or withdrawn.

31.2 The Club failing to fulfil its fixture or causing The League to suspend such fixture shall be liable to pay compensation for any expenses actually incurred by the opposing Club as a direct result of the failure or suspension. The amount of compensation will be at the discretion of the Board who will consider every such case on its merits. The Board may refer the amount of compensation to be paid to the Disciplinary Commission dealing with the misconduct by the Club failing to fulfil its fixture or causing The League to suspend the same.

Bolton will have points docked for this and the League have to decide if they give them to Doncaster or rearrange the fixture.

bury on the other hand have to prove funding and convince the EFL that they won't do what Bolton have just done in a few weeks.

The EFL will not give or be seen to give anyone any chances from here.

Doncaster claim that they and the EFL were not consulted about the game being called off, Bolton decided that did not want to play, because they only had 3 senior professionals available. On that basis if any team in the EFL as injuries and have to use youngsters on the bench can they call off the game. I suspect the EFL response will be no, but with Bolton, the EFL have constantly let Bolton get away with murder, I can understand why some Bury fans feel that the EFL are applying double standards.

I hope Bolton are punished by the EFL, but I suspect it will not happen.

Lots of rumours on Twitter that Bolton asked the EFL for the game to be postponed. The EFL refused so Bolton have just made the decision themselves, independent of the EFL and DRFC, and are effectively just refusing to play. Further points deduction to follow.

Somebody on t'other board is claiming some of the Bolton players will be picking up their GCSE results this week, thereby showing how young they are.

The only player on the pitch at Spotland last week who will be getting results this week is Luke Matheson.

Sky would be much better following 2 play off chasing teams in Dale v Ipswich. More entertainment value than showing the test card for 2 hours.

Just wait until tomorrow night with gmr trying to justify this decision. No doubt Parkinson will be praised for sticking up for his players and how he's courageously stuck by the club throughout this terrible time. That wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that should he walk away he won't be entitled to a pay off would it?

Bolton could be in serious trouble this one, never mind just trouble, over this one.
If they've unilaterally called off a game without consulting the league of their opponents they've effectively refused to play.
All sort of sanctions exist for that sort of behaviour.
As for Dearden, I remember him as a lazy, crap rugby league commentator before he got "promoted" in the GMR sports hierarchy.
Was very lucky to be in the right place at the right time.
You'd think he'd have a soft spot for Rochdale though seeing as how his wife used to work at Spotland?

Isn't Dearden married to Hilary Molyneux Dearden who was Rochdale's FC Company Secretary from 2000-2005?

Any idea when that will be decided TVOS? Selfishly I can't make that fixture so a PP would be a result for me, even if not for the Dale.
