I disagree, I thought Tavares' runs were poor and he was marked very tightly but there were a couple of times where Pyke was free but his movement wasn't great. |
i was trying to see both sides - never mind. Pyke's movement was good enough for an excellent first header for our goal and our best move of the game which ended in Done's shot being well saved included Tavares running at the defender. So yet again, the truth is rarely black or white. | |

Been covered loads but we're desperately lacking pace/trickery in the final third and I think it's making are style of play look a lot more sterile than it actually is. From the (admittedly few) games I've seen us play we look half decent but as others have said there isn't enough movement upfront. I think we've always been at our best when we've had pace/skill in the final third to maximise in one and one situations- look at when we had Buckley, Hogan, Done (first spell). BBM clearly acknowledges this lack of pace- his positioning of RND at left-wing on goalkicks says as much- but at the moment it's all too easy for teams to pack-out the midfield area, make it difficult for us to find space when they know we haven't got the personnel to run in behind.
The most disappointing aspect for me is it's three years in a row where we've got to November almost desperately wishing it was January. |  | | |

It was a wonderful goal and the type of goal BBM wants us to score. We've scored a few of them too, at Southend and Tranmere memorably. The issue is, can you do that every week when you've not been given the budget to bring in any players and half the players you do have are out injured?
Probably not, but if you have a style in mind and you are given time and support from both the board and the fans to implement that style, then you can pick players up to fit along the way and start to build a culture and eventually a team that plays the way you want them to. You can't do that after a few months in charge, with a host of injuries and a lack of investment.
Someone earlier in the thread mentioned getting back to the way we played at the end of last season. We were certainly getting results then, but if you want results and performances then you can't point to those games as a blueprint. We won four of our last six games 1-0 and from what I remember we created very little but did enough to grind results out in those games. It certainly wasn't the type of football I would want to watch week in week out anyway.
I think we're in a fortunate position this year where we SHOULD be able to steer clear of the relegation zone due to the situations at Bury, Bolton and Southend. As such, I hope we use this season to build our understand and confidence in these methods, for the young players to progress (they will develop into far better players for playing this style of football in my opinion) and for BBM to start to figure out the kinds of players he needs to make this style work on a long-term basis. Let's not forget it's his first full season in management.
Failing that, let's start Calvin and Wilbraham up top for the rest of the season and #gerritforward. |  |

We used to have a really patient fanbase who saw the bigger picture. More recently there seems be a lot of short termism creeping into the stands. Tuesday night was ridiculous, to the point where I had to double check the score when I got home to make sure we'd won; don't think I've ever heard fans boo a winning team before.
Granted, the performance wasn't great in the second half but it was a winning one and was similar to the type of performances people have alluded to towards the end of last year, in that we defended pretty well and restricted them to minimal chances.
The football throughout the majority of the season has been a breath of fresh air. We've finally got a commanding GK with good feet, pacey full-backs willing to get forward but don't forget their defensive duties, O'Connell is superb, Camps is getting forward creating and scoring goals, Rathbone providing much needed bursts forward, Morley has an excellent passing range and Hendo doing what he does best.
We're 16th in the league, into the 2nd round of the FA Cup (With a home tie against non-league opposition awaiting us), an Old Trafford trip in the Carabao. It's a work in progress, but the youngsters need our support - I dread to think what they were thinking when warming up by the Main Stand. A brief look at some of Tavares' social media activity in recent days suggest the players are feeling the negativity.

It's a wonder anyone turns up to watch the likes of Stevenage or Morecambe. Or how about Hartlepool or York or Chesterfield or Wrexham or Notts County or Darlington or Stockport.
Presumably 49thseason means you've been watching at least that long. How on earth did you cope in the 70s and 80s? How will you cope if we have to lower ourselves to play in League 2 again one day.

Having listened to some of the Wilbraham podcast interview, there’s obviously been an interest amongst the players in the past to playing two up top. Would like to see it now and again if only to because it’s actually something different in the current game.
Things changed and it made formations like 4-4-2 obsolete, it made sense to evolve. However, things have gone so far that it needs another change to reignite interest. It’s baffling why we have barely used 3-5-2/5-3-2 in the last two seasons after the success using it in the second half of 17/18. It would have suited our centre halves since then much better, and when you look at the current full-backs and their importance to going forward it would free them up even more, whilst retaining the numbers in midfield. Crucially, there would be two proper options up front and not the sight of someone like Wilbraham/Tavares/Pyke in a full back area.
There has to be acceptance that we have a way of playing amongst the fanbase. There also has to be an acceptance that flexibility within those beliefs may produce a better product in terms of results and entertainment. |  |
