Cricket tour v SA 12:00 - Dec 18 with 26403 viewsD_Alien

Jimmy Anderson back in action since breaking down in August, and taking a wicket in the first warm-up game

Looking forward to this tour, as the team looks to establish a new sense of purpose in the test arena. Ben Stokes had a great tour last time, and should be feeling in good fettle

Incidentally, batting for the SA XI, Matthew Arnold. I wondered what he'd been up to after writing Dover Beach

An interesting line up. I can see bringing Curran in to lengthen the batting without Stokes, although I am surprised that neither Wood or Archer are playing. I would have thought that their extra pace would have been an asset on what could be a flat pitch. I am even more suprised that Pakistan have gone in with just four frontline bowlers. If England bat long their young seamers could have a heavy workload.

So much for batting first! Hopefully they don't keep us in the field for two days. There is supposed to be some rain forecast for later in the test.

EDIT - Rain forecast throughout the test.

40-1 & really should be for 3. 2 very catchable chances dropped in the slips so let's hopee that doesn't come back to bite us. Good to se Jimmy get the wicket after a poor performance in the last game. Can he get to 600 in this match? ( is it 594?)

591 now

Stokes dropped a couple last match (may have had other things on his mind) but no excuses for those two earlier

Two drops and an edge that no one appealed for. Some luck so far!

The pundits were getting in a tizzy about the slip cordon being too close to each other and to the bat.

According to the speed gun, Anderson was notching 85, so no slouch. If the slips take their position from Buttler, who has his own issues in keeping hold of the ball, then the entire row needs repositioning.

It's turned into a decent day, even accounting for those two early drops. Shame the weather hasn't been great. Bizarrely we would have got a full days play in if the game had been held at Old Trafford.

Very Frustrating especially as it looked like being an interesting and testing session for our batsmen. Lancs also off at the moment.

I blame Nasser for spending the whole three Old Trafford Tests moaning about the weather "up here".

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

If the game had been played at Old Trafford there would have been three full days of play. Today would have been a bit dicey, but it is currently dry, although the light is not great!

Looks as if we've finally found ourselves a no.3, and at 22yo Crawley plays with a maturity beyond his years

Not sure about Burns. His recent form has gone rapidly downhill and he's left the door open for another opener to step up to the plate. Only trouble is, there's no certainty about when our next test match might be

I've always thought Burns needs to swap with TV historian Giles Coren, as no one will know the difference.

332-4 at the close with an unbeaten partnership of 205. Hopefully Butler can get to 100 tomorrow. we should be able to bat the possibility of a Pakistan win out of the equation tomorrow

Wow what an excellent day. Crawley was exceptional, what a joy to watch and what a great partnership with Buttler. When he came in the game was evenly posed but England are in charge.

200 for Crawley. Such a shame there's no crowd there to show their appreciation.

Yes, but watching this lad bat, there's going to be many more occasions when he'll be taking plaudits from full houses. Looks relaxed at the crease, has got every shot in the book and not afraid to ride out spells of good bowling

5th wicket partnership with Buttler now England's highest in test cricket

And he's just achieved the highest Test score for England by a Kent batsman.

Absolute pasting on the cards. Could see it being close to over tomorrow if we enforce the follow on.

So after all that, Jimmy just needs two more for the 600 as Pakistan follow on 310 behind

Slips need to wake up...

those 3 drops were unbelievable, all very catchable. Obviously want Jimmy to have something to play for in the second innings !!

A great innings by Ali who was under pressure for runs. The three drop were woeful. Hopefully there will be enough play for us to wrap it up and for Jimmy to get to 600 wickets.

Rain breaks may help to keep the bowlers fresh.

Jimmy gets wicket 600. Didn't look like any play today but fortunately it's cleared up a bit down south. Slight chance of an England win now

Glad he has done it this game, especially with uncertainty as to when the next test will be and if they are in Sri Lanka and India he might not feature anyway.

A couple more quick wickets would be interesting with 35 overs to play, or the light becomes unplayable.
