Cricket tour v SA 12:00 - Dec 18 with 26325 viewsD_Alien

Jimmy Anderson back in action since breaking down in August, and taking a wicket in the first warm-up game

Looking forward to this tour, as the team looks to establish a new sense of purpose in the test arena. Ben Stokes had a great tour last time, and should be feeling in good fettle

Incidentally, batting for the SA XI, Matthew Arnold. I wondered what he'd been up to after writing Dover Beach

They batted really well, although Blackwood was looking uncomfortable against the short ball. Get Broad back on and hopefully clean up. It's going to be an interesting next 42 overs.

Nicely set up for the decider now

Selection will be interesting, and slight worry over Stokes who seems to pick up 3 or 4 injuries every game but then rolls up for the next and just keeps on producing magic

Really good day for England. How good would it have been to be there Today? Stokes said on interview that he is okay, so fingers crossed. Interesting selection debate for the decider. I'm not sure if the Windies seamers will be able to back up on Friday. Gabriel looks knackered and Joseph hurt his bicep. It has been a really good series and fair play to the Windies for coming over and fronting up.

Stokes overtakes Jason Holder as world's top-ranked allrounder

And as you say, seems good to go for Friday

Archer has passed his COVID 19 tests & is available. Not sure if he will be selected as they may want to add missing a game to his punishment. The momentum is with us so I would expect us to be favourites whether he plays or not. Glad it's going to a decider & hopefully 5 days on a good wicket.

Not surprisingly the weather is not supposed to be great for the next test. The real question is what seam bowlers to play. I'm going for Archer, Broad and Anderson. The two old stagers and the pace of Archer for when the ball gets a bit older. If the weather was supposed to be better and the pitch a bit quicker Wood would be playing but in English conditions and in a series decider Broad and Anderson have to play. Woakes and Curran can consider themselves unlucky and there is an argument to play one of them instead of Archer if the pitch is going to be slow. It would certainly lengthen the batting order.

Agree about Broad and Anderson

Think the batting line up will stay as was, and Buttler deserves another chance after being sent in to open. A question mark for me against Dom Bess. Doesn't look confident enough in himself just yet to be taking advantage of 4th/5th day pitches. I'd give Jack Leach another shot, although we're crying out for someone to come through who can really give the ball a tweak

So it's one from Curran, Woakes & Archer. Can't see the adjacent pitch playing much different to the previous one, so i'd go with Curran

Interesting line up. Batting looks a bit light. I would have chosen Curran over Woakes as Woakes is too similar to Anderson and Curran is a better batter.

Unfortunately the weather forecast is not great and we may only get three days of play. We need to bat well today and set up the game.

Due to the likely time restrictions, absolutely vital we get a score on the board so at least we don't lose the series

I think a draw, and series draw is the most likely outcome, and that'd be fair given the balance of play so far and the good will of the West Indies to tour under these circumstances (won't complain if we win, obviously)

The Wisden Trophy is being retired after this series, and if the WI get to keep it that'd only be fair too after being on top for most of the time since it was instituted in the early 60s. To be replaced by the Richards/Botham Trophy

Good to see Cornwall bowling, difficult morning session and Stokes the key to a decent total again

All credit to the Windies. To come over and be away from home in a bubble for such a long time is a big ask. Good fielding by Chase but Root was on his heals a bit. As you say, a big session coming up. Will Gabriel be able to last through the day?

Very good last session and very much needed with a long tail. Really hoping Buttler can get a big score and these 2 take us well beyond 300

A really good third session after two pretty much even ones. There was a great spell when Pope was pulling out all sorts of high quality shots. It is forcast to rain most of tomorrow and Monday, so if any play is possible tomorrow we need to push on.

Pope is a really lovely player to watch and plays with a maturity beyond his years. Massive addition to this side. A big innings from Buttler too under pressure, hope he can build on it tomorrow (or more likely Sunday).

Tangled up in blue.

I cannot believe that play has got underway on time. With the forecast I expected no play today.

Bet Ollie Pope wishes it hadn’t.

Yep. Just need someone to hang around now and let Buttler play his shots. Hopefully push beyond the 300 mark.

Indeed. Roach and Gabriel (apart from the no balls) have bowled well but it looks like we will be well below 350/400 which looked achieveable with Pope and Buttler in. I suppose it moves the game on with the forecast bad weather.

How does Archer bat above Broad?

Not sure? Archer looks like a number eleven to me, although he has put in some decent scores in the county game. So he has got some ability, allegedly. Not really seen him apply himself for a longer innings so far. Broad has shots but if you bowl full and straight then he usually gets cleaned up. For a long time Broad was a decent 9 and even muted as an 8.

Great repair job by Broad and Bess

Not to forget that once Pope went early, the lower middle order were exposed to a pretty new ball, but with a likely total of 350+ we're well in charge of this game

Edit: Broad's fifty the third fastest ever for England, 33 balls

Broad is on fire. He will probably come out and get a Michelle in the Windies first innings. What a game test cricket is with its ebbs and flows.

Another good morning's cricket, and with the denouement of the Premier League to come later, a great sporting Sunday, irrespective of no fans*

Shame we won't have the usual crying in the stands for those relegated

* the sporting element hasn't suffered at all imo, irrespective of those who think it's a shit watch

Just the 6 wickets!!! Mystifying why he didn't open the bowling this morning and only came on after the follow on was avoided. It will be interesting to hear the reasons especially as he bowled so well yesterday
