Frustrating we seemingly didn't learn anything from the first game. I guess, in BBM's defence, if he is trying to instill a passing, possession based brand of football it's difficult to switch it up for one game.
While our 2 centre backs pulled out wide when the inevitable fook up happens like last night several times your 2 defenders you need to protect the goal are stood nearer the corner flag, Newcastle put 4 players to press yet nobody picked up on it and we still carried on doing it, at what other time would you let your defence be outnumbered by the opposition attacking, whilst casually passing it around. Youd struggle playing that idea out with premier league level players

Would have taken a reply and a 5-2 aggregate all day long when the draw was made, and still have the same view. After a long cup football famine we have been feasting for several years. Hope the special feeling from big cup games never starts being taking for granted. As for the rest of this month if we could get a win at Mk the gap between us would be reassuring. The stats suggest they were all over Burton last night, so a tough one there. Wycombe and Gillingham I think a couple of draws would just break up the pattern of loosing a few on the trot that has been a feature so far this season. I’m all for the passing game - but it befuddles me that teams (well certainly our team) don’t have the collective nous to change it up either collectively or individually to either keep the other team a bit on the back foot.

Another difference second half was down to Lynch not thinking he's a premier league footballer (outfield)
Don't think he was acting on instructions either, just being sensible in clearing his lines. However good Sanchez might be in other respects, I'd like to see Lynch given the chance now to claim a longer term no.1 spot at Dale (although I guess the terms of Sanchez' loan won't help)
Its ok trying to play a passing game whilst developing play in a patient manner, but not from your own six yard box, on what will be increasingly uneven surfaces

Totally agree.In an ideal world we would play like City ,Liverpool or any other quality team by playing out from the back and keeping possession . However it strikes me that our players don't want the ball in this situation,treating it a bit like a parcel at a kids "pass the parcel "game feeling a sense of relief if they can pass it on to someone else to be the one to make the mistake and perhaps cost us

We tried to play our football, it didn't work. We played a much better team and they took advantage of our individual errors when they didn't in the first game. That's the FA Cup and that's why they're a Premier League outfit and we're a League One outfit. But as others have pointed out, that excellent 45 minutes in the home game gave us the opportunity to see Dale at SJP - so let's be grateful for that rather than too critical of a team that have lost against a team from two divisions above.

Rathbone was a big reason we started that 2nd half much better - he really started to take on the Newcastle players and he was superb - he was always going to be a big miss last night.

We beat ourselves last night rather than them beating us with their quality. The latter I expected but the former is always a tougher pill to swallow no matter who the opposition.

Ok so we score one,how many have we conceded this season that’s ultimately gone on to cost us the game? We ain’t PSG or Bayern Munich with players who can make summat from nowt. We all know the goalie’s distribution isn’t exactly his best attribute,so just get rid and that goes for a couple of his defenders too. No wonder our goals against are just about akin to an extra lost point mainly through poor defending. Welly it away and worry about fancy tippy tappy at the back when we’re well clear of the bottom.

Must admit I got the opposite impression …… seem to remember one of the knocks on him was he had been blessed with a "touch of the Grobbelaars". For me, he's saved us (literally) more often than put us in a hole, but if he's going back at the end of the season, I wouldn't mind Lynch getting more playing time either, as previously suggested.

If we just punt it up field the ball doesn't stick and just comes back at us. We don't have anyone apart from Calvin that can bring it down with his head and win aerial duels.

Isn't the passing it about before the keeper kicks it long about drawing the opposition players out of position? The problem is the lack of pace to capitalise on those 'long balls'

Not really as its only drawing their forwards onto us,doesn't really influence their back line for the inevitable hoof it when we run out of options to pass it anyway
