Good news if he can stay fit. Need to offload Delaney and McNumpty asap.

I'd keep McNulty as long as he stays fit, excellent as back up and seems a genuinely decent chap to have around the club as an older pro

I dont think we are in the business of paying salaries to people just because they seem like "decent chaps". If McNulty is able to play 90 minutes regularly and is better than others we might be able to sign on similar terms, fair enough. If he is no better than a younger player with a brighter future then perhaps he needs to find alternative employment when his contract expires.
If he has completed his coaching badges and has a flair for coaching and if we have a vacancy, maybe he would get a coaching contract, subject to the usual appointment processes.

McNulty has been integral to us and solid for some time now. We've really missed him this season.Cant believe there are still McNulty haters out there!

Look at our defensive record last season, you've hardly done him a service to say he was integral to that

Once partnered with Ebanks-Landell we improved ten fold.

The issue was who was partnered with him earlier in the season...

McGahey - one of the most over rated defenders we have ever had.

Please look at Rochdale’s results last season when he came back into the team.

You may notice the 4-0 and 5-0 thrashings stopped, and we conceded less goals.

As the season wore on, we won 4 of our last 6 games 1-0. At the heart of defence in each of those games.....Jim Mcnulty.

We have sorely missed him this season once more.

You've missed the first 2 parts of my post out... let me remind you "if he stays fit" and "great back up", Jim wont be playing regularly if O'Connell and McShane stay fit that's a certainty, as I said great back up and good to have around the club...

Woooooahhhh!!

You've used the word 'good' in a post about one of our players.

Are you feeling alright?

Undoubted knowledge? Or just the application of common sense and using my brain?

As has been mentioned, McGahey was a huge problem for us. His pace got him out of a lot of situations. McNulty's errors were perhaps more high profile but came every 1/15 games where as McGahey was small mistakes every 15 minutes!

On a positive note, we seem to have quite a solid defensive unit to pick from now.

Let's not re-write history about McGahey

After a hesitant start, he was pretty solid for us, to the extent that he earned what (at the time) seemed to be an upwardly mobile transfer. No use citing what happened to Scunny since then - the facts as i've stated them are borne out by the largely positive regard he was held by Dale fans as evidenced in reviews of games on here

Returning to try and claim some credibility for dismissive early opinions is pretty cheap at this stage

Yes, but I genuinely don't think that is the type of deal he has agreed.

Hang on a minute, 1 second you’re saying he isn’t on a pay as you play, the next, you don’t think he is. Surely, due to his fitness, lack of games, the ‘pay as you play’ kind of deal, which I mentioned, will be a big part of his deal.

The only fact in your statement is that he got a move to scunthorpe, who were below us at the time and still are.

The rest is opinion and I share the same opinion of many others in that he used his pace to get him out of poor positioning. This of course made him exciting to watch and caught the eye but must've been a pain for the coaching staff and his teammates.

Of course you're entitled to your opinion also, but probably best off not calling it fact.

I regarded him as extremely poor early on in his career with us, he did improve somewhat throughout his time here.

However I was not concerned at all when we sold him as I always viewed him as vastly overrated and massively over reliant on pace.

It is no surprise at all that he has made little progress since leaving.

Immediately after EEL & JMC became our centre back pairing a lot seemed to change, alongside the return of Ollie.

I was citing the FACT that there were mainly positive post-match reviews of McGahey on here on a very regular basis. He wasn't the greatest in the world but he did well for us in the main, with the odd mistake like any other defender at our level

If you disagree about that FACT, you might wish to waste your time by searching back through the Match Threads whilst he was here, but i've saved you the trouble

My main frustration with McGahey was how much potential he had. He had everything physically that all our great defenders have had (with shed loads of pace as well) but never seemed to mature into the defender he should’ve been. You can imagine why he was so highly rated at Blackpool and Sheffield Utd as a youth player because you’d have hoped with game experience he could really have pushed on- unfortunately I’d wager the weaknesses he had at 19 are probably still in his game now.

The signing of McShane for me is a risk worth taking. If fit we’ve got a centre back pairing as good as any we’ve had since I can remember. As long as we have decent cover (I count McNulty and one other as that) then I think we should be ok. It also gives another ‘been there done that’ pro for our younger players, including O’Connell, to learn from.

Edit- let’s also consider the Jimmy Ryan effect in all this. We’re judging McShane on 5 or so games after a serious injury. i I wouldn’t be surprised if he kicks on even more if fully fit after getting 10 or so consecutive games under his belt.

I think it was Michael Owen at Man Utd a few years ago that was supposedly on a 'pay-as-you-play' deal as it was reported by a few media outlets. What this actually meant he was paid a relatively low wage regardless of his involvement, then big bonuses per-appearance and per-goal that took the wage to one that befitted a first-team player. I suspect this is what most people mean now when they say 'pay-as-you-play' rather than the literal, semi-pro definition where players literally don't get paid unless they play.

That’s exactly what I meant, obviously only guessing, but would certainly make sense.

The start of your second paragraph is, for me, spot on.

We are all aware McShane has had injury problems recently, and he probably will have have them again during the next 18 months. However, he's an excellent CB who will improve our team whenever he plays.

I'd rather we took the risk of signing him than taken the risk of not bothering. Time will tell, of course.

I think we can judge mcgahey on the fact that he didn't improve scunny and has struggled in L2.

I know it's difficult to accept, when the Match Threads indicate a different opinion to yours, but they exist and can't now be gainsaid, so no point in trying

He tends to reach for the thesaurus when he's riled.

Like I'd said he caught the eye and some fans will have appreciated his pace covering his mistakes.

I try and back all the players and support them when they're at the club but his deficiencies were there to be seen.

The opinions of others don't worry me, all I've done in this thread it's to say that I felt the things you were portraying as fact were your own opinion.

I presume you'd checked the previous posts of individuals on this thread that have expressed an opinion about McGahey so that you can assert your fact that they've changed their mind to get some kudos?

Anyway, isn't that the point of opinions? They can be reconsidered and changed based on facts? Unless the person is too pig-headed to back down that is.

Erm, I didn’t realise I was portraying anything, and didn’t really check in detail other posts about McGahey as I initially posted my opinion on what I thought PS’s contract would cover, but was shot down by an in the know qualified journalist. But, seeing as you’re on about McGahey, my opinion is that he was overrated and no big loss.
