Regardless of the political view the shutting of pubs cafes etc and the 80% payment for those off work, whilst costly as hell is a very proactive action, one that I don’t know of anyone else doing.

Think we should applaud that, regardless of other flaws

I've got to be honest with you, if Corbyn was running the show so poorly I'd be saying on here the guy is past it and it's time for him to go. I'd have my head in my hands and that's the honest truth.
Johnson's not quite at that point yet but he is very, very near. In my opinion he's got the rest of this week to shape up and tonight's address to the nation is critical for his future.

He's got to cut the waffle and make it crystal clear exactly what is needed to turn this crisis around. We need to get in front of the curve at all costs.

This is just my gut feeling but after tonight's address he needs to be taken out of the public facing firing line and a very senior civil servant needs to take over the press conferences. Just to give us the facts, no bullshit. Ministers have enough to do. This may not be popular but I'd like to see somebody like Ian MacDonald the guy who fronted up the Falklands War press conferences.

Debates and differences in opinion are healthy, and totally agree with above and BDM, (2 agreement with BD in a few days, we are in difficult times 😀)

I think tonight’s address is going to be a no pissing about, hardline one. Either lockdown except necessity and serious consequences for the frankly stupid, selfish, dickheads, who walk about ignoring advice.

Boris is our PM so feel he should be announcing what is going on, but agree support from other sources to back his words does no harm.

Here on outskirts of Ipswich, very few people are flouting advice, is that the case where others are?

I think he thinks that the Churchillian-like positivity is appreciated. It’s having the opposite affect though. Instead, it makes him look like he hasn’t got a handle on events and detail. And people just want detail at the moment. I actually think he has improved on his Thursday conference where I actually thought at one point he was going to say we’ll fight the virus on the beaches. You get the impression that somebody has had a word with him and said just drop the war stuff it isn’t having the desired affect.

Here's the Italian version

(From Paul Anthony Ratcliffe)

Message from a Brit in Italy 🇮🇹

......Dear People of the UK

You will of course be aware that Italy has taken extreme measures in the hope of slowing the spread of the Corona Virus.

These are measures the UK may be forced to implement, later down the line.

As a Brit living in Italy, here are some things you need to know:

Our supermarkets HAVE STAYED OPEN. They are on slightly reduced hours and you have to queue to get in (yes, it’s a ball-ache) but they are OPEN, EVERY DAY. Deliveries continue to arrive so for fecks sake, shop like NORMAL HUMAN BEINGS!!!

Enforced social isolation does not mean you cannot leave your house. It means you can still leave your house for ESSENTIAL activity, like shopping. So put down the fecking pasta and toilet rolls and breathe. Now you don’t have to share a bed with your four kids because you’ve had to turn their rooms in to store cupboards for the all the pointless and selfish hoarding you are doing.

Pharmacies are still open so you DO NOT NEED 236 bottles of Calpol, 429 packets of paracetamol and 987 Tubigrips. Colds, flu, headaches, muscle pain, period pain, teething babies, they are still out there, Corona Virus or not. So, again, step away from the goods, buy what you NEED, put back what you don’t.

We still have access to all basic medical needs. Again, we have to queue and observe the recommended 1M distance from others but within our community, this has been well-organised and adhered to. Suck it up. For info, the Italians do not queue or respect personal space in the way that we Brits do. If they can do it, then you fecking can too! It’s practically a national pastime!

Bakeries and butchers - still open. See points above.

Pet shops - still open. Calm it, Fido. Your nightly Dentastix is safe.

DIY shops - still open for ESSENTIAL maintenance items. I only know this because I tried to buy a cactus when I went for a new shower head, only to find non-essential aisles closed to the public. Fair enough, right?

Do me a favour. Share this around. The measures are extreme but they are not SO extreme that you need to be utter feckers to each other.

Shop responsibly. Then go home, pour yourself a gin and celebrate the fact that your food shop is not going to take you 6 hours to put away.

And let’s be honest, on the off chance that you do contract the virus, the last fecking thing you are going to want is a big bowl of pasta, 2ltrs of Fanta and a bumper pack of fecking Morrison’s sausage rolls!!!😮😮😂😂

Up the Dale - NOT for sale!

The emergency powers act, debated today in parliament and apparently with all-party support, will allow the police the powers to fine those who flout the new restrictions and disperse gatherings - it's debatable whether the measures announced tonight could've been enforced in this way before now

Just saying, as calls for these tougher measures to be implemented before now would've seen the PM falling foul of some very basic rights in law, stretching back centuries. Other countries may well have had different existing powers

I'll reply to your post BDMC, as a generic reply to the others who've also expressed similar thoughts

I asked for people to look out for each other. Many people have asked the same, and it's clear there's a need on the part of some people who remain unhappy about political events over the past say, six months, to use this crisis as a stick with which to beat the government. There's very little that's constructive in this, and the simple fact is that we don't know whether the policy being pursued - which includes changes as circumstances change - will be the right one

I'm very resilient, as might be apparent, but i'm well aware that for some people, inducing ideas that we're all going to be worse off due to government action/inaction (as has been directly claimed) will simply add further to their anxieties. So i ask you, and the others - in all honesty, is that worth your need to vent right now? This isn't sport, nor the normal day-to-day political discourse

It's also been said by plenty that the time for reckoning isn't now. But there will come a time

This thread arose from the government having delivered what many wanted on economic packages. (There's a bit more to do yet.) On a different thread i expressed the view that the government "had bloody well better" sort out the economic packages - doesn't that tell people i'm not "blowing smoke up" anyone's arse? If riddler resorts to such language, he'll get it back. Maybe he, and your good self, should just consider where that takes us at this time

It gets us as far as arguing the opposite. If I think the govt has cocked a lot of things up, I can say so. I said Sunak seemed sincere and performed well, it’s nothing to do with being bitter at political events, I can’t change those, I’ve let them go. I think BJ has finally made the right decisions today. See it’s easy, just look at events, come to a decision about what feels right or wrong and keep it to yourself, or post it on here or anywhere. I can do it without calling you names, I didn’t say you were blowing smoke, I was referring to people in general who seem to be saying the PM was amazing.
I’m logging out of the forum for a few days.
Take care

Fair enough

You take my point about the emergency powers legislation though? Calling for any PM to do whatever, just ain't that easy after all, but let's put this to bed

Keep looking in, you might just pick up some bit of information that'll help you through - we all might

A very sensible and neccessary decision made by the government.
If people think that it wont affect them, Wrong, it could potentially affect each and everyone of us.
People need to stop being treating this Virus with a lack of respect as it will Kill given the right conditions.
If the Police cant keep people off the streets I am sure the military can.

Speedy recovery to anyone with symptoms and best wishes to all....My illness whatever it was has all but cleared up now, feeling quite fit and well...My 7 day isolation ends tomorrow so my exercise from tomorrow will be taking the five minute walk to my greenhouse and workshop with my dog, if there's any shortage of tomatoes cucumbers greens n stuff there will be loads of the bloody things in a couple of months time....Hoping for a good crop of Grapes this summer also..Will also be keeping busy in the workshop as non activity is not good for mental health, was great to see the Army delivering protective equipment to hospitals this morning, more of that please....My daughters dropped off supplies yesterday and they called into Aldi in Milnrow, no real shortages and very quiet they observed, the message must be getting through at last....A breakfast of poached eggs on toasted sourdough crumpets awaits so i'll stop rambling and sod off....Thanks to all on here for offers of help and kind words......Stay safe peeps...

As previously mentioned I've had a persistent cough for too long so started antibiotics last Thursday and took the penultimate one this morning. Cough seems to be drying up somwhat and jury still out til Wednesday on that. At the weekend, I got a terrible sore throat and congestion in the head and coughing got worse. The problem is with CV is that there are still "seasonal bugs" doing the rounds at the same time and I'm pretty sure that's what I had - a cold which I'm now getting over, but it is human nature to wonder if it may be something worse. Co-incidentally, this appeared on my timeline last night which I found very interesting and thought I would share in case it helps someone else too.

That's a pretty normal weekly occurrence in my house DL,with a nearly 2 year old in the place a cough and temp is the norm and when hes not got one you're only waiting for the next one to kick in,resulting in the Mrs who's asthmatic anyway getting a bad cough for days, which went down a treat at work, before they all got told to work from home anyway!!!
Hope your symptoms shift sharpish
