Don’t plan that trip to the local just yet. Sky news reporting that Rochdale is in the top 4 areas in England for coronavirus cases due to a spike in infections (numbers infected per 100000 people).

Weren't Rochdale's schools closed for most of June? If they'd opened on June 1, I imagine the figures would have been much higher. Apologies if completely wrong. |

Most primary schools have remained open throughout for keyworker children and even during the holidays near me it seems, my little girls local primary in Salford increased the intake massively during the last couple of weeks possibly even doubled in number. | | | |

Yep - sorry. What I meant was Rochdale didn't reopen for Rec, y1 and y6 at the same time as other local authorities (e.g. Olham reopened for those year groups on June 1st).
I was suggesting that if they had, there would have been more children in Rochdale schools from the start of June which might have made the current situation a lot worse in Rochdale, children being "super spreaders" as Hancock clearly alluded to in the Commons the other night when discussing the Leicester situation. |  |

With the fall in deaths and infections the media need to create scare stories for clicks. Data raises questions but does not provide answers, especially if the data is out of date.
Context is always needed. Introduce one of the only walk up testing centres in the countries and you will get more people getting tested as it's easier to get tested. More tests, more infections detected.
Also it appears that there are a number of people who can't wait for another lockdown/second wave or other speed bumps in the return to near normality. [Post edited 1 Jul 2020 20:21]

Re your last point: every 'speed bump' that happens is going to get exaggerated from now on. They're all predictable - and indeed have been predicted by the scientific community (in the case of localised lockdowns), economists (in the case of rising unemployment) and echoed during political briefings
They're then presented as if they're entirely unexpected. It's just further evidence of the degradation of reportage into hyperventilating panic | |

He did say this though. The health secretary told BBC Breakfast there had been "an unusually high incidence" of coronavirus among children in Leicester since increased testing began in the city 10 days ago. |  |

US health insurance/big pharma aside, I wonder if Trump owns Gilead shares like he had shares in the malaria treatment he was boosting but which he backed down from when medical advice showed it actually exacerbated conditions in some patients? It comes as no surprise that Covid has become a shrinking violet when faced with such a worthy opponent. |  |

These individual lockdown proposals are a direct result of people having stuck up two fingers to the requests for social distancing and applying the rules.
Simply attending raves, group gatherings, demonstrations and the like is now resurfacing in the wider community and yet again, the majority will have to be restricted because of the crass actions of a few who couldn't be arsed to conform - and probably still won't.

Newcastle has had big city protests but the infection rate there is less than 10% that in Rochdale. depends how many tests are undertaken - Rochdale has the first ever walk-up test centre so maybe we're just testing more of those who are susceptible to being infected. We're 17th out of 160 local authorities for rate of confirmed cases but 59th for deaths. | |
