First Signing For Rochdale ? 09:18 - Jun 14 with 8884 viewsLeeBrookfield

Lots of clubs getting business done early. I suspect that as the club has furloughed a lot of staff, possibly players too. The club may not be looking to sign players until as late as possible to keep the wage bill down for as long as possible.
As Rochdale fans we are probably well aware we always have late and last pickings.
So realistically who would you like us to sign?

My first realistic suggestion would be Paddy Madden [31 CF] from Stockport County.
Massive experience, goal scoring record, we need 3 strikers for the season as last year showed us, he would want league football, could sign a 2 year deal, financially possible if SCFC in non league can afford him, a nightmare against us and Irish for BBM. Thoughts ?

So who do you think we should sign realistically?

Tony Collins was manager of Rochdale 60 years ago. Pointless comparison. The game has changed.

But Rochdale again languishing in the bottom division of the football league hasn't.

Yes - the analytics are a potentially useful tool but they can't be at every game in the country and the players must have enough game time to produce a meaningful result. They also can't account for a player not being deployed correctly. For these reasons I can't see how Analytics would have recommended Gary Jones, Craig Dawson, Alan Reeves or Ricky Lambert

Exactly mate, all any decent scout needs is a good pair of eyes. Analytics, I shake my bloody head.

As much as I understand where you’re coming from, you only have to look at Brentford as a prime example of how data analytics in football can be successful. They even scrapped their academy and installed a B team where they recruit recently released players based on analytics & statistics ultimately to sell for massive sums of money.

But it's not "analytics" or "scout"; there is a place for both of them in the game. I'm sure our recruitment of the likes of Newby, Beesley and the loan players involved a combination of the two.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

And they've just been promoted to the top division for the first time in nearly 80 years. How anyone can see what Brentford have done and dismiss the use of analytics in football out of hand I don't know.

Maybe it's just scary for some people that football is no longer the same as when they were a lad. Change is not good!

Tangled up in blue.

Absolutely this. Analytics can tell you where to look, but then I firmly believe you still have to go and look physically.

Well looks like Hull City did not need too much time to sign Andy Cannon, hopefully Oli Rathbone will stay now, although I suspect if other teams are using analytics, he maybe up there in the considerations ? Although just watching him, you can tell he is a championship player in my book.
Look out for some team like Preston or Barnsley to make a move ?

Had a similar thought - hopefully this ends their pursuit of Rathbone.

Eeee, I remember when you could smoke 20 woodbines and sink 10 pints of mild with the players before kick off and then have 20 more after the game. It never did George Best any bloody harm.

THE BLOODY GAME HAS GONE.
