Felt like a BBM performance. Lots of pointless passing; played at a slow tempo. Particularly in the first half.

I dont like this three-centre half formation at home, with O'Connell playing the quarterback. The passing out of defence is just too slow with no chance to build up any penetration.

Well done Oldham. Better than their league position I would suggest.

We are more than good enough to play with a flat back four to allow us to have another creative midfielder further up the pitch.

We could even play Broadbent as more of a holding midfielder as he’s probably the one with the most bite about him & allow Morley & Dooley to play slightly further upfield.

I never thought I’d say this but we really, really missed Dooley yesterday. Especially in their half.

Really couldn’t believe that Stockdale kept with five at the back to the death, especially when we were chasing the game. We are losing games in the middle of the park & it needs addressing.

Be brave Robbie, don’t become so blinded by a formation (or dare I say it philosophy). We’ve had enough of that to last us a lifetime!

Not sure it's a formation problem - it's more that the 2 No 10s (Cashman & Newby) & who I think RS is referring to as the "difference makers", had very poor games.

ps as a long-term supporter of Dooley (you're right we did miss him) it's been encouraging to hear so many fans now changing their minds; all power to you too for that 1907

I've not changed my mind as such about Dooley, he's just playing (or being allowed to play) much more to his potential, which we could all see from his first few games for us but then disappeared down the BBM unresolvable philosophical conundrum

I agree about the formation not being the real issue. People refer to a "back five at home" but it's just not, it's a 343 and as such gives the team adaptability against different opposition. As you say (and as RS said), the issue yesterday was simple lack of form and touch from key players. It was 97 minutes of frustration in front at least a thousand new or returning supporters who'll have gone away thinking "same old Dale"

In some respects, they're right - yesterday reminded me of many a typical Dale failure to perform in a keynote fixture down the years. The main thing is bouncing back, and these are the real tests of our new manager's long-term abilities. He's given us a team we can support wholeheartedly out of almost nowhere - can he regain momentum after a setback? All to play for!

Morley and Broadbent played mainly sideways yesterday. Dooley plays a lot more forward, we missed him. Perhaps an extra midfielder and Dooley playing more forward in the large void left by our current formation. Certainly at home where we are struggling to score.

I'll admit I was never a big fan of Dooley but think he was very hard done to not actually starting yesterday after the way he's played recently, and if truth be told I think we really missed him yesterday.

Kelly has the skill set to play a well waited forward pass, which folks have said may have been what’s been missing. RS did mention he is now ready for him to make more use of.
On the RS comments I was a tad surprised how relaxed he was in the post match interview. He has been more forthright when we have played better. His comment that stood out was that we lead most of the stats for the game. Which was possibly the case, but most of the positive stuff didn’t happen until the last 10 minutes. I had it in my mind that I was going to ask TVOS if he knew when we last went a whole match at home without a corner. Because we had none until about 80 minutes. So the stats comment threw me a little.
My other comment is we have a fully fit squad, a rarity, at the moment. We have yet to capitalise on that. It is early days for us and I have to cut some slack given how late we had to change manager and get a squad together. I predict we will get more points from our second set of 10 league games than our first.

He might have been relaxed if he was drinking pints of wine with Big Sam later.
Wonder what the former England manager thought about the game.
And what words of wisdom he passed on later?

Nothing. He was there yesterday and has been at other games this season. He works with Stockdale in an advisory/mentoring capacity.

When I was your age, I used to enjoy the odd game of tennis. Or was it golf?

Little Sammy was sat with Big Sam in the main stand.

Was Fat Sam in the stand?

I came up yesterday and was hiding in plain sight with you Daley's but I didn't notice him, probably just as well really

He was sat with Sammy Lee (who hasn't gone anywhere) at the front of the Directors' Box.

I don't think Dooley was on the bench due to performances - he's been excellent so far this season. It's obviously difficult to start the same players every game - it's a long old season and Stockdale has already said the squad will be used. Seeing Oldham were bottom and just been hammered 7-0 I'm sure Robbie thought it was as good a time as any to rest a few players - it didn't work and we certainly missed Taylor at the back and Dooley in the middle. Graham and Broadbent didn't have the best of games and Cashman wasn't as dangerous or attacking as Odoh. I'm pretty sure our stronger player will now start at Bradford. It's not a disaster losing at home to Oldham - just a shame our unbeaten run had to end at home in a Derby game.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10
