January Transfer Window 21:15 - Dec 20 with 60337 viewsHullDale

With about ten days until the transfer window opens, what’s everyone’s thoughts on the business we should be doing in January?

I’ve tried to pull squad details together as best as I can from memory here:

Joel Coleman (permanent, Summer 2022)
Jay Lynch (permanent, Summer 2022)
Brad Wade (permanent, Summer 2022)

Jim McNulty (permanent, Summer 2022)
Eoghan O'Connell (permanent, Summer 2022)
Jeriel Dorsett (loan, Summer 2022)
Sam Graham (permanent, Summer 2023)
Max Taylor (permanent, Summer 2023)
Joe Dunne (permanent, Summer 2022)
Matt Done (permanent, Summer 2022)
Aidy White (permanent, Summer 2023)
Corey O’Keeffe (loan, January 2022)

Liam Kelly (permanent, Summer 2023)
George Broadbent (loan, January 2022)
Conor Grant (permanent, Summer 2023)
Jimmy Keohane (permanent, Summer 2023)
Aaron Morley (permanent, Summer 2022)
Ethan Brierley (permanent, Summer 2022)
Stephen Dooley (permanent, Summer 2022)
Alex Newby (permanent, Summer 2022)

Abraham Odoh (permanent, Summer 2023)
Jake Beesley (permanent, Summer 2023)
Josh Andrews (loan, Summer 2022)
Danny Cashman (loan, Summer 2022)

For me, I'd be looking at O'Keeffe permanently as a priority, as well as trying to tie some of the regular first team squad down to longer deals (Summer 2022 as it stands could see an exodus!) - Coleman, O'Connell, Dooley & Newby would be the obvious contenders.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Broadbent (& maybe Cashman) head back to their parent clubs in January, with maybe Morley moving on for a fee too.

Whatever happens, now the club seems to be more settled, hopefully Stockdale will have the chance to continue shaping the squad into his own - with an emphasis on more permanent players coming in. A centre half and a natural goal poacher (in the Alfie / Dagnall mould) coming in and we could really be setting up for a strong second half of the season.

IF the Downing signing comes off, & IF we sign O'Keeffe (still hopeful - no goodbye message, still on our squad page etc), then I'd be quite excited about a line up like this:

Coleman
O'Keeffe - Taylor - Downing - Dorsett - White
Kelly - O'Connell - Odoh
Newby - Andrews

Bench : Lynch, Grant, Done, Cashman, Broadbent, Dooley

(if O'Keeffe doesn't sign, try Odoh at RWB and bring Grant into the midfield).

I'm taking comfort from the fact we look to be getting outgoings sorted early (rather than what feels like the usual last minute deadline day losing a key player). It gives RS time to sort out who he wants, and I'm sure he already has his eye on a few.

I totally get people worrying that we may have lost Beesley, Morley & O'Keeffe since the New Year - but I'm still fairly confident... maybe being an eternal optimist is part of being a Dale fan. Even if we create 25% less chances with Bees gone, but convert 10% more of the ones we do, I think net-net we'd be scoring more goals than we have done so far. That all depends of course on if Andrews (or ANother) can hit the ground running.

He might be able to do a job there but I don't want to see O'Connell in midfield especially with 3 centre backs behind him!

If O'Keeffe is off somewhere else, would anyone fancy getting Luke Matheson back from Wolves? Currently on loan at Hamilton, but hardly playing and not fancied, thinking we could take him off their hands - Fitz, you may be able to shed light on why this is?

Think he would suit our formation with the free range to bomb up the park like COK does.

Would definitely take Luke back prefer him to O'Keefe but not sure how likely that is to happen.

If Hill was manager I think he would have gone for him, Robbie hasn’t seen him develop so would think of Luke as a target (unless Jim says something)

There's no room in the matchday squad for any more loanees now unless one of them leaves this early this month.

Tangled up in blue.

Maybe, just maybe, Matheson hasn’t kicked on?! He’s had a couple of loan spells now and barely featured.

There were some on here going mad at Dale selling Matheson for a low fee. We sold him while his stock was high, he was doing OK for us but not rattling off MOTM performances each week. The decision to sell when a decent offer came in has proven to be wise.

I think Matheson is the better defender, has a better attitude and I find him more exciting to watch going forward. Obviously it could just be those rose tinted glasses of a player that's come through our academy but then there's a reason Luke's been picked up by a premier League team and O'Keefe hasn't.

It’s beyond rose tinted glasses.

Once featuring more often, Matheson was targeted by opposition managers (not his fault, simply a weak link for a cross field ball due to his height). He played predominantly as a right back, as opposed to O’Keeffe playing at right wing back, so you’d expect him have to do more defending.

Matheson is/was an incredibly grounded young man, but I don’t think you can say his attitude is better than O’Keeffe. What evidence have you got for that? O’Keeffe came in as a loan player and absolutely worked his rocks off every time he wore the shirt. There was nothing to suggest his attitude is anything other than good.

Matheson more exciting to watch going forward? Sorry, you’re smoking rocks. O’Keeffe has been the best, and most exciting, full back and wing back we’ve seen at Dale. Look at his goals and assists. Wiseman is his peak runs close but he didn’t have the goal or assist threat. Matheson caused excitement with the goal at Old Trafford, and it was ace, but again what evidence do you have for that statement?

The reason Matheson got picked up by a Premier League club? Potential. He was 17 years old and playing mens football.

This quote is from the journalist at the Northern Echo who advised we had been scouting Charman at Darlington:

“ Charman remains with Quakers, despite a League Two club this week making an offer that met his release clause. The in-demand striker spoke to the club, but turned them down and they have since signed another forward”

This is an interesting one. We were named alongside Bradford as having an interest in Charman, but he seems to be creating something of a buzz this season so probably several clubs interested.

We haven’t signed a striker, so it’s not us! Bradford signed a winger/forward on loan on Tuesday.

I don't think I'm as passionate about this as you are I'm a fan of both players .

It sounds like we're seeing the game the same way from what you say and agree Matheson could be targeted. Its just an a opinion and my preference.

The fact Matheson has been deployed in both right back and wing back where as O'Keefe is seen as inept at right back probably lends itself to my thoughts that Matheson is the better defender. Not that he's an incredible defender but better than O'Keefe.

In terms of attitude it wasn't his work rate I was questioning more his diving, silly bookings and general poor positioning. He's been caught out a few times by being too high when we've lost possession and then failing to get back.

Going forward O'Keefe has proven to be one of the best wing backs we've had with goals and assists, no question. I did love watching Matheson beat a man with the ball at his feet though and the speed he got forward with his low centre of gravity similar to Odoh.

Does say several clubs interested. If it is Bradford it’s a surprise he would turn them down, although they do have a few forwards already so maybe he wasn’t going to be offered much game time? Doesn’t sound like it will be sorted before the weekend though.

Sounds like he's rejected Bradford. Not sure where that leaves us. I'm guessing they could offer more money than us.

Having a look at the BBC League 2 site indicates Hartlepool, Barrow and Tranmere have signed strikers this week. Hartlepool would make the most sense I guess.

If given a choice, Matheson over O’Keeffe is nonsense.

I should have just left it at that.

O’Keeffe has shown what he can do in this team, under this manager, in this preferred formation. He’s been excellent. Too good really, because I think it’s generated interest from other clubs which wasn’t there previously and that is making signing him difficult.

He's still only 19 though and his ceiling is very high. Wolves weren't signing him without thinking he had the potential to be a Premier League player.

No matter what happens in his career, I still think the fee for Matheson was too low given how high his stock was and given that in the same month, an older full-back in the same division with fewer first-team appearances, no international honours and no eye-catching goal at Old Trafford was signed for more than 3x the amount we got for Matheson.

Tangled up in blue.

It always makes me nervous when there are several clubs interested in players Dale are linked with. We know we very rarely compete financially. We don’t get to know how many players we miss out on, I think I’m glad because it would only disappoint.

We do have a reputation for improving players though, and then not standing in their way if they’re ready for another step up. If a player has got his head screwed on, that may/should work in our favour.

No so long ago there was a player from Darlington who was courted by several clubs. He signed for Dale because it felt right.

Charman is currently serving a 4 match ban (may be 3 now). If we don’t sign him we could enquire about Morelos at Rangers.

He can’t reach his ceiling, not without a stool. And that’s the reason why he’ll be targeted by opposing managers if he plays at right back.

I remember you pointing out the other lad sold. Can’t remember his name. Where is he at now?

Sam McCallum. He's on loan at QPR but hasn't played since October.

Looking at Soccerbase, McCallum started 37 games last season for Coventry in the Championship. He was playing this season for QPR in the Championship, but hasn’t played since been subbed in the first half (suggesting the absence is due to injury)

Admittedly, two years between them, but the playing time and standard of football are backing up the difference in fee.
