January Transfer Window 21:15 - Dec 20 with 60938 viewsHullDale

With about ten days until the transfer window opens, what’s everyone’s thoughts on the business we should be doing in January?

I’ve tried to pull squad details together as best as I can from memory here:

Joel Coleman (permanent, Summer 2022)
Jay Lynch (permanent, Summer 2022)
Brad Wade (permanent, Summer 2022)

Jim McNulty (permanent, Summer 2022)
Eoghan O'Connell (permanent, Summer 2022)
Jeriel Dorsett (loan, Summer 2022)
Sam Graham (permanent, Summer 2023)
Max Taylor (permanent, Summer 2023)
Joe Dunne (permanent, Summer 2022)
Matt Done (permanent, Summer 2022)
Aidy White (permanent, Summer 2023)
Corey O’Keeffe (loan, January 2022)

Liam Kelly (permanent, Summer 2023)
George Broadbent (loan, January 2022)
Conor Grant (permanent, Summer 2023)
Jimmy Keohane (permanent, Summer 2023)
Aaron Morley (permanent, Summer 2022)
Ethan Brierley (permanent, Summer 2022)
Stephen Dooley (permanent, Summer 2022)
Alex Newby (permanent, Summer 2022)

Abraham Odoh (permanent, Summer 2023)
Jake Beesley (permanent, Summer 2023)
Josh Andrews (loan, Summer 2022)
Danny Cashman (loan, Summer 2022)

For me, I'd be looking at O'Keeffe permanently as a priority, as well as trying to tie some of the regular first team squad down to longer deals (Summer 2022 as it stands could see an exodus!) - Coleman, O'Connell, Dooley & Newby would be the obvious contenders.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see Broadbent (& maybe Cashman) head back to their parent clubs in January, with maybe Morley moving on for a fee too.

Whatever happens, now the club seems to be more settled, hopefully Stockdale will have the chance to continue shaping the squad into his own - with an emphasis on more permanent players coming in. A centre half and a natural goal poacher (in the Alfie / Dagnall mould) coming in and we could really be setting up for a strong second half of the season.

Looking at Soccerbase, McCallum started 37 games last season for Coventry in the Championship. He was playing this season for QPR in the Championship, but hasn’t played since been subbed in the first half (suggesting the absence is due to injury)

Admittedly, two years between them, but the playing time and standard of football are backing up the difference in fee.

They may be to some extent now, but those appearances in the Championship came after the sale when he returned on loan. But like you say there's two years between them. At the time of the sale, Matheson had featured in more league games, featured internationally and made headlines with that goal at Old Trafford and the assist for Wilbraham against Newcastle. He had a stormer in that televised game which people forget. People I know who couldn't tell you a single player in our squad now knew about Matheson and a couple of them even commented to me how crazy it was that we'd sold him for such a small fee.

The Athletic's Wolves' reporter whose name I've now forgotten reported at the time that Dale had accepted the first official bid that came in for Matheson and that's what irked me as much as anything. I'm not saying £3.5m would've been fair, but there's no way McCallum deserved to command 3.5x the fee we got for Matheson at that time.

Tangled up in blue.

Another thing to credit Bottomley for.

In retrospect possibly another Brian Clough style motorway services deal ....although you wonder if Prem clubs still do stuff like that. Herein lies the problem with undisclosed deals.

I would prefer O'Keeffe to Matheson for the here and now definitely. Matheson is obviously off the cards now that Downing has arrived, but I wonder if Downing is in effect a replacement for O'Keeffe, even though they don't play in the same position. Could Graham or Taylor play WB? At a push, Odoh or Dooley? COK doesn't do much defending now, and we saw how effective Odoh was when used as an emergency WB... we could play Taylor/Graham at RWB for the games we expect to be under the cosh and for a bit more height, and Odoh/Dooley when we expect to be on the front foot.

Personally I would let Cashman go back if we can get another striker - he seems to be behind Newby, Odoh, Grant and Kelly in the team, and it's a waste of a loan position if he's not going to be picked.

If we're considering Taylor or Graham playing wide I think it'd be more likely to be as a full back in a back 4.

If O'Keeffe is off somewhere else, would anyone fancy getting Luke Matheson back from Wolves? Currently on loan at Hamilton, but hardly playing and not fancied, thinking we could take him off their hands - Fitz, you may be able to shed light on why this is?

Think he would suit our formation with the free range to bomb up the park like COK does.

That's a really shame hopefully he can recover some form and confidence, and finish the season strong.

I've only seen him play once for Hamilton - and it was live pasting from Partick Thistle on BBC Scotland. The whole team was horrendous, not just Luke.

It's a shame because I liked him for us. Sure, he had flaws, but he was young. You would've hoped Wolves would have ironed those out by now, but it sounds like he has regressed.

Without being derogatory about the Scottish Championship, it is not necessarily the place I would send a young player I am hoping to turn into a Premier League regular.

It's a different world. It's a physical league with disparate levels of quality within it. I would argue it is weaker than it was a few years ago, too. Luke should have torn it up, but he hasn't.

In other news, our former trialist Ryan Gondoh has signed for Ayr. I'll be interested to see how he gets on.

In RS latest interview he says he’s hopeful on two or three players coming in (in addition to Downing), but it’s touch and go if that’s tomorrow. That interview was filmed yesterday I think.

I’m not expecting any announcements today now.

Had a quick peek to see how R Dan was getting on after reading this - hadn't realised he broke his foot and out til end of Jan. Mixed opinions on their forum (Gills). Many thought he'd go back off loan to the Canaries.

I should have added the link to the article:

https://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/sport/19846722.rose-may-return-end-tough-week-

Does say several clubs interested. If it is Bradford it’s a surprise he would turn them down, although they do have a few forwards already so maybe he wasn’t going to be offered much game time? Doesn’t sound like it will be sorted before the weekend though.

I can’t see in this article where it says the club he turned down has signed another striker.

Looks like it’s been edited since yesterday. The tweets in reply seem to indicate it was Hartlepool who made an offer.

From the Colchester game, where the team sheet was announced but ultimately the game not played, it appeared that Dooley would be playing RWB, with Odoh on the bench.

I’m not a fan of that. It could mean there has been a change of heart.

Hartlepool & Bradford both linked with a £41K bid on the circus of ITK that is Twitter. That £41K fee may have legs as it’s pretty specific I.e. release clause.

It was the fact that shirt was far too similar to the year before that was the biggest problem with that kit. Oh, and that there was no black on the socks.
