Today was disappointing. The way we lost was a clear indication that the multitude of mistakes made over an awful season would inevitably lead to a performance reflecting that over 90 minutes.
Inevitability is often a bigger problem than sudden devastation and that’s what we need to change.
The way we are wanting to play has to change, because turning up every week and knowing that a lack of positive tempo in favour of retaining the ball (or not) in negative areas is draining enthusiasm. |  |

The damage was done last summer, with a) not sacking Stockdale and b) Stockdale's extremely poor recruitment. We should have addressed it in the January, but failed to do so.
Today we went to county with the expectation of us going down today, it would have been worse, we have gone into the game with hope of survival and left after being beat in such a poor manner would have been more devastating. Today was like a long standing wake.
I was disappointed by the abuse from some of the younger fans at EEL and some of the other players, it was totally beyond the pale, yes the team was sh*t, but there is a difference between criticising players and abuse. [Post edited 22 Apr 2023 20:10]

Damage was done for this season from last January onwards. Looking back at the first game of the season, there are only 5 starters who played today and by then I presume the majority of the budget had been frittered away on players who quite simply are league standard.
Hindsight will also tell us that Bentley was the completely wrong manager for the job. In a squad desperately short on quality he seemed to fall out with too many players and didn’t get the most out of the ones he didn’t.
I know his style of football hasn’t been for everyone, but McNulty has been the only person to get any sort of tune out of this squad- whilst having ‘none of his own players’ and playing three teams in or around the play-offs.
If I was the board I’d be sitting McNulty down in the next week, asking how and where they can support him next season and what his visions are for the next year.* Following that I’d draw up and action plan to ensure real experience was brought in to support him**
* assuming there isn’t a great manager available with non-league football experience, who plays attacking football and will join a skint club who might have different owners in the next 3 months

I guess part of the equation here is whether the BoD think the club can continue to develop saleable assets through the Academy and it helps if the 1st team play the same style of football. Its arguable that we have only maintained EFL status up up to this season because of Academy sales and Cup ties. Losing Cup tie money now though seems inevitable. Maybe the MRTK report will shed light on this proposition.
My belief is that we have to build bigger crowds and selling talent doesn't do that. Money has to be put into a consistent and persistent marketing drive to fill seats in the stadium which in turn will build better teams ... but you have to have a decent, exciting product on the pitch to do that which counters the possession football but no goals scenario we seem to be having at the moment and which has cost us 2 relegations in 3 seasons. |  | | |
