ULEZ. The Mayor of London, Khan, has won the court case and will go ahead with his plans to charge those with non-compliant vehicles £ 12-50/day. . Visits to Barnet, Woking etc will be affected. Residents who live within the zone will be offered up to £ 2000 scrappage if you meet certain criteria eg disability. This will not be offered to those who live outside the zone. On two visits to family this year in London there is a definite feeling that there is public disquiet about this - perhaps demonstrated last week at the result of the bye- election in Boris Johnson's parliamentary seat. So minimum pay workers at, say, Heathrow who work unsocial hours over a 5 day week using a non-exempted vehicle will have to stump up £ 62-50 to get to and from work. As we visit family now resident within ULEZ some weeks ago I had a letter from 'Khan' asking me to put my credit card details on my Transport for London account so they can automatically debit me.

It's really worth checking if your car isn't compliant --- more than 90% of vehicles will be. You also wouldn't be charged anyway if you go to Woking, Dorking, Maidenhead etc, as the M25 isn't in the zone. I think the venues affected in the NL are Bromley, Borehamwood, Barnet and Dagenham.

Burnham is too much of a political opportunist to follow suit, but his successor will probably have to address the air pollution problem. But now the gates are open for the usual policy of 'political creep'. Non-complying vehicles from next month. And then "The ULEZ is working well so next month we will start charging those who drive red cars."

When berthed they continue to generate electricity from continual use of their engines by burning low quality diesel. That same problem is now producing excessive pollution in amongst others, e.g. Southampton. So why doesn't Khan ban Cruise Liners? Oh no we cannot do that. They bring tourists who spend money in London. Khan wants to have his cake and eat it.
I am saddened that you should want to write off the poorest social groups. They are perhaps the catering staff at Heathrow, the night security staff on building sites etc., low paid, working unsocial hours and in need of transport during those unsocial hours, when TFL cannot get the to their places of employment. It appears yet again that those most vulnerable in our society will suffer yet again.

Nothing works properly in this country anymore, there are millions sucking on the Government tit, umpteen levels of buraucracy, with more degrees between them than were given out in the previous 100 years combined and everything they touch turns to rats. The simple fact is this... we are saddled with £3.8 trillion of old age pension liabilities and £1.2 trillion of public service pensions liabilities and those figures are 10 years old! And everyone keeps kicking the can down the road in the hope it will go away. We would have to use the whole of the UKs GDP to pay out on those liabilities. In short, the educated idiots have shafted us all with the rough end of a pineapple.
Add to those numbers £12billion a month on debt payments on borrowing and it becomes clear that this and every other western country is utterly bust .. its just that no one dares to admit it. My only suggestion for anyone who has a number of years ahead of them is to invest in gold and silver, often and as much as you can afford. Oh, and tell every so-called politician you meet to get stuffed with prejudice, irrespective of which side of the uniparty they represent. |  | | |

Historic vehicles
You can apply with the DVLA stop paying vehicle tax if your vehicle was built more than 40 years ago. This date moves forward on a 40-year rolling system. For example, when the ULEZ launched in April 2019, vehicles built before 1979 were eligible to apply for historic vehicle tax class.
All vehicles that have a historic vehicle tax class are exempt from the ULEZ. This tax class excludes any vehicle used commercially (for example, coffee vans or street food vans).
In line with the existing LEZ discount all vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973 are exempt from the ULEZ, regardless of commercial use or otherwise.

Have you tried parking near a tube station recently?! Near on impossible unless there is a car park. I used to park in the streets close to Southfields but they have put yellow lines down everywhere. I needed to get to Hammersmith to a concert during a rail strike & had to pay to park on somebody's drive. | | | |

ULEZ is certainly extremely unpopular and I hear it mentioned a lot around here because it will impact on people travelling from outside the zone to places you wouldn't necessarily consider to be London like Sutton, Chessington & Kingston.
Khan has been an ineffective mayor & is desperately trying to achieve some kind of legacy but I think it will come back to bite him in May. The Tory candidate is also targeting the much-hated implementation of low traffic zones (where they have blocked off residential streets & forced more traffic onto main roads). They have just resulted in bigger jams and longer journeys - and yes, you guessed it, more pollution. The man's an idiot. | | | |

Good thought TVOS, but unfortunately they connive to punish motorists from all directions - local councils as well as City Hall. TFL & the rail companies charge ridiculous parking fees at stations too.

Thanks but my family will in future reside within the ULEZ. So I have to drive in and out of the zone i.e. the day I arrive and the day I depart. If I use the car on any other days within the ULEZ that's another charge. To visit family for , say, the Dorking game weekend staying from Friday to Sunday will cost me £ 37-50 plus of course the on street non resident parking charge levied by Ealing Council. | | | |

Do you recall the peoples question time event at Ealing Town Hall in early March when he publicly called protesters Far Right, Covid Deniers and Vaccine Deniers. He was asked to resign but wouldn't. He is turning Gtr London into a dictatorship.

So, me being a state pensioner, you expect me to go out and spend 10s of thousands on a new vehicle. Read my posts. I only drive 2000 miles/annum. Why did I buy a diesel car? Because the politicians of the day encouraged me and many others to do so in that they would prefer drivers to purchase diesel powered vehicles. This isn't about pollution It is about Khan replenishing his much depleted coffers at the cost of those at the lower end of the social scale. If it was about pollution he should take a leaf out of Amsterdam's book, and immediately ban Cruise Liners berthing at Tower Bridge. But that would destroy a relative new stream of tourist revenue.

I should stress I'm not a natural Labour voter at all, but I can see that he's made two big commitments to make the lives of Londoners better, one by trying to reduce air pollution and two by building a lot more social housing.
I really want to stress that, while the outer London boroughs are maybe a bit more traditional in their views than inner London, the vast majority of Londoners are deeply upset by the inequality of wealth in the city. After all, millions of us are from other parts of the country and don't want to live in some mad bubble for the super rich. So it's no surprise the capital is becoming more left wing; frankly, Sadiq is as good as nailed on to win a third term and ULEZ won't change that. This is probably why the backlash on the right has been so vitriolic.
People complaining about loss of 'freedom' from not driving: are you really saying the c25% of British adults who don't have a driving licence are effectively prisoners?

I've seen Tower Bridge open for cruise liners before now - we're not talking about Royal Caribbean type mega liners.
I disagree about Khan & his achievements in building social housing - he's nowhere near reaching the numbers he committed to. If he really wants to do something he should address the number of "luxury" apartments that are permanently empty and are purely investments for rich foreigners. | | | |
