So Labour now have no candidate to vote for and so cannot win this by-election, though Ali stays on the ballot paper. He will now have to decide whether to stand as an Independent or re-invent himself as something else.
George Galloway must be skipping with joy at the news. Starmer has created a massive headache for himself. Only yesterday morning, Angela Rayner, deputy leader was describing Ali as 'a wonderful candidate'.

He'll be out campaigning on Tuesday night next week ahead of Thursday's by election so the inherent value in the ticket is undermined from that standpoint if he's not going to do all 8 games. |  |

Well done Simon, Galloway is using football just like his support for Gaza, the man is an opportunist, pure and simple. Have any of these candidates actually talked about the problems the town has,.. the high mortality rate, having some of the poorest wards in the country, the education standards below National Averages, the money wasted on vanity council projects, the lack of a proper hospital, the lack of government jobs other than at the job centre, why Kingsway industrial estate which was built on the promise of high value jobs has become just another warehousing estate? And why even more warehousing is to be built in Heywood alongside 7000 houses with no apparent improvement in the local services like schools and doctors? All this and 60 councillors drawing £1m a year overseeing it. |  | | |

I’m guessing Ali hoped his comments would only be disseminated amongst the voters who wanted to hear such things. How they became public knowledge will be of major concern. I’m not accepting his apology at all. He said what he meant.
Galloway is a crafty sod. He knows his audience and how to play them. When he used to rant about workers’ rights I was quite impressed. But his opportunistic approach and self-centredness in his election campaigns soon showed him in a truer light. If he gets in on the strength of the Gaza vote, it will be a travesty. He will do nothing for the town. |  |

I think it would be a good thing for Rochdale if a Rochdale person won it as an independent even if for only a few months.
Come the General Election it will be a safe Labour seat but the opportunity is to prioritise local issues and that is desperately what the town needs.

So, the postal vote received for this by-election totals a massive 24,000. Staggering by any standards and entirely unjustifiable that so many are allowed to vote in this way. Of course it by-passes the 'show your ID' scenario required at the polling station, so draw your own conclusions from that.
It's time this racket was stopped. The only people entitled to a postal vote, should be those who are registered blind or disabled, or those out of the country on the day of the ballot.
With 24,000 postal votes submitted, the winning candidate may already have been elected before any of us get near a ballot box.

We are two of those postal votes, as we were away on holiday last time there was a vote on something. I assumed we would automatically revert back to a standard vote after that, but apparently not. Having then headed over to the online portal with our unique reference and password, we couldn't simply change back to a standard vote and instead kept following dead ends. Ultimately, I need to just pick up the phone and speak to someone, I think, but I won't be doing so for this vote as I fear something will go wrong and I'll end up with no vote!

I should think so too
Unless absolutely essential (i.e. can't physically make it to the polling station) postal voting exposes the system to all types of manipulation, including coercion. It goes against everything our forebears fought for, not least votes for women, for which some gave their lives | |
