I expect it would be too short notice for Saturday, but perhaps the trust could ask for donations to cover the cost of overnight accomodation in the Eastleigh area on Friday so the squad aren't traveling down on the day. |  |

I think the difference is that the issue was raised after the defeat at Barnet where the team travelled down on the day for a 7.45pm kickoff?
To travel down on the day for a 3.00pm kickoff would be a different kettle of fish. | | | |

I guess the other issue is traffic hold-ups, meaning arrival could be delayed beyond the kick off time | |

Being facetious, back in the day could mean the era of Third Division North and Third Division South.
Seriously though, I think that teams often used trains rather than coaches which meant a bit more freedom of movement during the journey.
Coach trips to most games with the exception perhaps of the Devon clubs were made on the same day. Staying overnight was reserved for important cup ties or crucial promotion matches and the fact was probably mentioned in the local press as an indication of how seriously the club were taking the game. Players took it for granted whereas these days they’re conditioned to anything south of Birmingham being an automatic overnighter.
It doesn’t help that membership of the NL seems to be seriously dominated by southern based teams, so much so that Bishops Stortford have just been relegated from National League North.
We talk a fair bit about comparing playing budgets with other clubs in our division but it would be interesting to see the budget of, for example, Gateshead or Halifax for travel costs.
And it would be interesting to see if the likes of Dorking, Boreham Wood and Maidenhead pay for hotels the night before a game when they come north. [Post edited 17 Mar 21:41]

Mark Stuart at one of the Trust Curry nights told a story that back in the day (mid 90's) Dale had a rare overnight stay before a Barnet away game. There was some sort of private party going on in the hotel on the Friday night and most of the players ended up gatecrashing, getting pissed and staying up till the early hours. It had a huge effect on the players performance the following day.

I am sure some do and some don't. Early in the season I remember Oxford City players staying at the Norton Grange on a Friday night ahead of their game at Boundary Park. And I wouldn't have thought that was such a bad journey compared to clubs further south | | | |
