TVOS Preview - Rochdale v Accrington Stanley on 23:11 - Oct 24 by dannyuk

Can't even go into singling out individuals The team performance today was utterly spineless. Looked like a bunch of lads just not up for it in the rain.

Mentioned it at half time but those booing any of our players mid game or singing "f*cking hate [own player]" just piss off that's not support and not helpful on an already shit afternoon.

Keeping them all happy is borderline impossible so some leaving has to happen when the time
Is right.

Separately, the amount of squabbling, arms in the air and general poor body language and blame culture today and at other points throughout the season is hard to stomach. It’s a culture we didn’t really see under Jim. Or rarely anyway. Watson needs to get a grip of that fast.

That was particularly noticeable between Gilmour and Francis, and not hard to imagine why

Id probably say Accrington play an expansive style, we had 1 shot on target in 90+ mins, seems it's that expansive it only appears once every few games...... the trick seems to be wait to concede then realise its blatantly not working then react and change, or better still wait to the 4th goal whistles in then think of possibly changing things around

Oh but apparently singing about having or not having the ball for a bit afterwards from the same bunch is 'proper support' now. Hearing some of this even in the first half was almost as embarrassing as the player's performance.

On the match - Accy were very good today. MotM for us was the pitch by a million miles, was begging for it to waterlog.

Brown is still a worry for me. Yes he's scored recently but his overall play isn't very good. He's not a target man because he can't win the ball either with his head or holding the ball up. He doesn't make any runs in behind the defenders. Any balls played up to him today he was just more interested in wrestling with his opponent rather than winning or controlling the ball. Henderson must start at Port Vale - at least he will occupy defenders.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

I’m with you on the theme of that last line. Whether it’s because the injury situation has contributed is one thing, but the way players have been collected has not always made sense.

Why sign Silcott-Duberry if Smith and Middleton were on the radar? We could have made do with what we had.

Why sign Sherring? Even if Maguire wasn’t fit we still had enough options at CH before looking at loans before the window shut.

If we get to January and people are returning to fitness, would look to ship 4/5 out.

Doesnt Smith primarily play on the right though, Smith/Hayes on one side and Middleton/Duberry on the left kind of makes sense signings options wise

There’s also Hannant who seems to be above ZSD in the pecking order.

Not withstanding the games we’ve been without some of them, having 5 wingers is too many. As noted we already had Hannant who can play both sides, as could the others if required.

That Smith has been missing for two spells already makes the poor decision making worse.

Brown has done alright but I share the concerns. He doesn’t make the opposition think enough.

He works hard but not in a clever way, is far too easy to defend against. His runs, with and without the ball, don’t create problems for defenders.

Noticeable too between Wilson, Flint and Waller when the first two goals went in. Lots of shouting and waving of arms at the keeper. Mind you, could Flint have done more to block the third? In the end he only deflected the shot.
Playing from the back in that weather just wasn’t on. Having said that, if Waller kicked it long it soon came back again.

Not much more to add.

Shocking from 1st minute to last.

Newport 3
Gillingham 4
Accy 5

This is a huge concern going we are going backwards.

No shots on target that I can remember, certainly not one with venom that tested Moulden.

There has to be a reset for Port Vale if we get a mauling their it will be very messy indeed the next home game at Spotland.

Next 3 home league games York Barnet and Bristol Rovers.. all 3 real tests.

After a season of watching us play out well (nothing is perfect) from the back last season with 5 at the back (2 wing backs) and 2 CM fielders yesterday was a tough example of when it goes wrong.

For this to work every player needs to know their role, where to be, where each other will be, where they will be next, etc

We got there last season, Gordon would know where Tobi would be, Perry would know where Moss would be, Gilmour the CM with these two, East the other side.

Yesterday from first minute you could see this failing. Full backs couldn’t get an outlet in midfield or their respective winger, so ball turned back to Waller/Flint repetitively

Balls then played direct into CM which lead to first goal and numerous other times where we were simply slower/over powered in this area.

As half wore on plan C was adopted which was to go long. Only problem was, Accy were playing 3 across the back, we had 2 wingers and Brown. They went man for man across the pitch, the two wing backs free to defend further up the pitch and collect the knock down.

Check Mate. Hung, drawn, quartered.

When things go bad people look for scapegoats. Sherring is obvious choice and a returning to fitness Beckwith seen by some as the panecea. Word of caution on this, whenever Beckwith played in pre-season at LB i don’t think he looked comfortable in that position. He was no worse than many others yesterday but is obviously not a RB.

Lots to figure out on the training ground and need a reaction at Port Vale.

Poll: DF in or out

Fair analysis.

There remains the option to play three at the back with the wingers as wingbacks. Tutonda was playing as high as Middleton yesterday.

Another 4000 gate yesterday, 3500+ home fans

As the light and weather starts to turn, yesterday couldn't have come at a worse time. How many of those will be turning out in mid-winter?

Fans with longer memories have referred to previous home thrashings (it happens to most teams every now and again) but the reason i suggested this one as the most morale-sapping of all is looking at our situation in the round, compared to other embarrassments (the 7 conceded against Shrewsbury another) which happened when we were trundling along on gates hovering barely above 2000

We desperately need a result against Port Vale. I'm looking no further than that

Yes, as others have said, the lack of energy, decisiveness or any plan B from the dugout is the most worrying long term. Accy's formation stopped our wingers effecting the game, put pressure on our 'vulnerable' FBs and bypassed our M/F from minute 1. We decided to match their formation in the 70th minute at 0-5 down.

Great performance by Accy. From a Rochdale "coach" who seemingly values "performance" very highly, where does our performance stand today? Awful is being kind.
Watson says "no excuses" after today's spanking. His words are speaking louder than his actions to date. He looks worried in his post match. There were some poor individual player performances for sure . To see a team so weak, disorganised, unprepared for the opposition, second to most balls, lacking in character and team spirit is on the coach. Thought we'd got past the horror shows of the friendlies and early league games. Seems like we've got worse.

We've had a few good games this season. Had we not got lucky v Oldham and got the 0 points we should have if they could shoot properly, deduct those three points and then look at the league table. 23rd. Fortunately, we're not.

Hope we improve massively for next Saturday's game which could influence the lower end of the table. If not, Watson's tenure must be seriously questioned. Again.

we've got a 23rd place GD too

We were looking good for at least a playoff spot and there was a possibility of automatic promotion when we lost 7-1 to Shrewsbury in the midst of a very poor run. Crowds had been very good, well over 3000 most of the time with a couple of 4000+ attendances.

Yesterday’s capitulation was very poor, but as has already been said, hovering around lower mid-table would have been acceptable for the season as a whole. I expect much better than what we saw yesterday, but hopefully the new fans will continue to support the side when times are tough too.

This doesn’t detract from the fact Watson and his players have to be better.

Growing gates during better than average times were a perennial of being a Dale fan though

Achieving the current levels of footfall is a significant step towards a stated ambition

This one still feels qualitatively different, given the intervening history of the club, whatever the finer details are to be picked at...

It's far from terminal for the season, but it's a real jolt and a mood change and the key is whether IW has the personal resources to turn it around... again

The crowd v Shrewsbury was 2647, with 257 celebrating Shrews.

The seasonal average up to that point was 3500; take out away fans and the seasonal average for home supporters only up to then was 2975.

We ended that 2000/01 season with an average of 3250 (2786 home fans), which was the highest average attendance at Spotland since 4387 in 1971/72.

Wasn't that the game that Parkin (I think) brought Simon Coleman in for his first game following injury, and we completely changed how we played. Plus they had a player on fire that day in Luke Rodgers.
Funny, but even at half time I thought we were in with a chance.

It was. Went to three at the back ironically.

It was in the middle of about 12 games without a win. Crowds remained reasonably steady throughout and, despite some poor results at home this season, you’d hope supporters will continue to turn up this time around too.
