So, Hameed will make his test debut tomorrow, opening with Cook

What a wasted opportunity the final test in Bangladesh was to bring him into the XI in place of Ballance - now dropped

No real pressure on the lad. He can't do any worse than Cook's previous opening partners, and by the sounds of it he's going to be playing on familiar pitches:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/india-v-england-2016-17/content/story/1065209.html

He needs the full five tests, however he starts, and then some. If he's the real deal, it'll be a huge missing piece in the jigsaw filled

First hour's gone well, 47-0

Both openers given chances but pitch playing well and looks a great toss to win

Edit: Cook gone first ball after drinks. I'm gonna stop posting during play

Edit #2 - Cook walked after being given out LBW, hawkeye shows it missing by a long way

If I post during a game I try to be as low key as possible. It's amazing how many times things are going well until people comment and then something happens immediately.

I agree, it's uncanny and I take full responsibility

In the light of this I think we should refrain from jinxing a certain batsman by mentioning how well he's doing.

Batting paradise. How good is Joe Root!. Very very good!.

Hope Moen can go and post a big hundred now and get some scoreboard pressure applied.

Englands Day for sure.

Again, I agree, but it's a game of averages and I can't think of a single cricketer I've proselytised on here who hasn't got a better average now

20 consecutive innings by tourist's to India have failed to reach 300 runs! Until England - could arguably have been even better with Cook's non referral and Root's 'catch'. Need to follow it up tomorrow now and post at least 450-500 total.

Its a BRILLIANT goal to cap a BRILLIANT start by Rochdale - Don Goodman 26/08/10

Brilliant from stokes this morning.

Ducket needs a big score he must be low on confidence and on borrowed time.

Root -Ali and stokes with 100,s every run a valuable one now.

Having a positive outlook often works, and not just on a cricket field

England have batted fantastically well, 3 centurions, and against all the recent history of tourists in India. Let's celebrate that, whatever happens next

537 all out.

Useful number 10 contribution of 32.

Ansari is a useful number 10.

Right now we will see what our bowlers are made of. 30 overs or so the Indians could have 110-120 on the board by close.

Let's hope we get at least 2 and hopefully 3 or more wickets.

Great 2 days of batting after another 100-3 start which had me worried. Pity we couldn't winkle out a couple of wickets at the end of the day.

Hameed's the real deal, no ifs, no buts

Of course he'll have bad days but he's got all the class and temperament that other opening partners with Cook haven't - in fact he's making Cook look like the novice in this, his first test match

I remember watching Cook's debut in India and thinking within a couple of hours of watching him....this lad is going to play a lot of Test cricket.

I can say the same after watching Hameed today. He looked as comfortable against spin as Root and that is high praise indeed.

No idea how he will be facing Johnson in Perth or Steyn at J'burg, but that is in the future.

Thankfully he won't have to as Johnson has retired and Steyn has a serious shoulder injury which threatens his career. But Starc and Rabada will pose similar threats.

Hammed values his wicket and looks organised, with a good game plan. He is much more than a blocker but unlike the likes of Vince you need to spend time at the crease to build innings of substance.

Forgot that big Mitch had retired, Steyn's injury obviously holding SA back as Australia managed to get to a magnificent 85 today against SA's weakened attack.

It was a good performance on a helpful pitch. Just goes to show what pressure and good catching can do. Australia are a mess at the moment. Aside from Warner, Smith and Starc I am struggling to pick anorher player who would even be considered for an Aussie team from yesteryear. Even Gilchrist was bemoaning the lack of young players in shield cricket when tweeting about Hameed.

Great to see a young Lancastrian doing so well for England, and the England team up to now playing well.

Very good first test. England can take a lot of positives from it, but the wickets might favour India more from now on. Winning the toss will be crucial.

Our spinners looked as threatening as theirs, could've done with another ten overs at the end after another over-cautious declaration

Good test match!

When is the next one?

Next one starts on Thursday, they're coming thick and fast, all 5 before Xmas

It's a ridiculous schedule, and we have a habit of fading towards the end of a long series so we need to take advantage during the first 3 or 4 matches; that's why it was so disappointing Cook didn't declare 10 overs earlier - great sides take their chances to win when available

The end of that match will be etched in my memory. The game petered out, and then the Hamner Springs Earthquake hit.
