His diving is getting worse, that was just cheating

That was Steve Whitehall at his best. Put your foot against the opponent and fall. Whitehall was brilliant at doing it with goalkeepers.

If there's contact then you have a right to go down in my opinion, defenders can't afford to be that careless leaving a trailing foot out.

ashley young on 17:03 - Apr 15 with 818 viewsfrenzied

dont know why people moan about bad refereeing decisions ..at least there given honestly...but the amount of cheating that goes on amongst the players is awful..im sure that this is encouraged by the management

I'm convinced players must be trained in it these days.

Read this piece by Gary Neville last week which is one of the best on the topic http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2126567/Gary-Neville-Andy-Carr

But when the attacker deliberately stands on your foot to make it APPEAR like a foul, he deserves to be sent off.

There is no room for cheating when the stakes are so high. Unless the FA clamp down on diving, they will only encourage it.

Last weeks events were bad enough, especially when the defender was subsequently banned, but it seems they've been practising all week to do it again.

It's a mockery.

I agree.

But watching MOTD last night, Tevez (of all people!) was booked for "diving" in the box. Replays showed that he's been tripped - clear as anything.

Zero tolerance is fine as a concept, but impossible in practice.

Well it's an (almost) honest article from Neville and a decent read.

But he seems to be suggesting things were always thus. They weren't.

Liverpool, Forest and Villa were winning European trophies - consistently in Liverpool's case - at around the same time Neville talks of being a 7 year old school boy park player. And as a besotted lover of the game,he knows it.

In the 70s/80s the above sides played committed football. The likes of Tommy Smith, Emlynn Hughes, John Robertson, Gemmil etc would have been sent off every time they crossed The Channel had referees used the same interpretations of the rules then as now So it stands to reason things have changed in a short space of time.

With the will of the Rule Makers, the honesty of 30 years ago could return despite Neville's harping on about keeping up with the Jones's because if we don't we can't compete.

The biggest problem is the Rule Makers themselves - never was there a more corrupt, dishonest lieing bunch of non-governmental administraters. Until the proper people take charge of FIFA, Uefa and The FA, little will change.

i think the whole right to go down idea is rediciulous

you go down because you have been brought down

throwing yourself over because there was light physical contact is pathetic

On a different note, how bad are Aston Villa? I know they're not the first team to take a tanning at Old Trafford, but I've watched them a couple of times this season and they've been absolutely dire every time.
It's like watching a team from the 1980s/90s. Their only tactic is to sit back and hit it long. In every game I've seen them play it's been painfully obvious it hasn't worked, but they still persist.

Playing negatively is palatable if it brings results, especially if it's against bigger clubs with better resources. However, if you're getting beat by everyone what's the bloody point. All you're doing is actively reducing attendances.

I'd love to hear Mcleish's explanation. He can't be that stupid.

It's the modern game though.

Steve Whitehall, Will Buckley and Adam Le Fondre did it on many occassions in Dale colours, it's part of the game these days and that's why defenders have to be especially careful when challenging inside the box.

It's not even that modern, Kenny Dalglish made a career out of leaning into players and then just falling over, so my Dad tells me.

Whitehall is a good example, Paddy McCourt and Will Buckley also won several penalties that you could say were dodgy.

Lets face it though, it's an issue that you don't complain about if it goes for you. If we go to Leyton Orient needing a win and Nicky Adams blatantly dives in the box and we get a penalty and score. Not one of us will give a shiny shite that he's dived.

If Ashley Young dives against Germany in the European Championship Final and Rooney tucks away the penalty, nobody will give a monkeys toss that he's dived will they?

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

0
ashley young on 20:23 - Apr 15 with 532 viewsColDale

The rules are set up to promote diving. If the dive comes off, you gain a penalty and often a member of the opposing team sent off. If the dive doesn't, you get a yellow card. And the refs seem more hesitant to offer the yellow for diving than they are to offer the red for the challenge. Until the rules change where diving brings a red card (and allows the opportunity for TV review after the game), then it's never going to change.

Some say it was deflected, but I thought the keeper totally misjudged it.

I think Adams was aiming for Symes at the back post so was pretty much his standard cross.
