at 20:43 18 Jan 2024

Diddy Dave reminded me that its 100 years since finishing one point away from promotion to the second tier and probably our best ever season.
100 years ago tomorrow we extended our club record unbeaten run in the league to 20 games with a 1-0 win over Ashington. Over those 20 games our record was won 13 drew 7 for 29 against 8 and included a 7 game winning run. The run came to an end with a 1-0 defeat at Ashington the following week.

Many club records were set that season including winning 17 home games and remaining unbeaten at home conceding only 8 goals at home and 26 goals in total. Div 3N was a 42 game season until after WW2

We finished one point behind champions wolves having drawn both games against wolves 0-0.with over 16000 at spotland for the home game.

with two games to go we were level on points with wolves with both teams having to play at Tranmere. We lost at Tranmere 2-1 while Wolves got a draw there.

It was a golden era for the club after finishing so close to promotion we followed that up with finishing positions of 6, 3, and runners up again with Bert Whitehurst scoring 14, 9, 18, 44, 32 goals before leaving for Liverpool under manager Jack Peart who left for Bradford City in 1930 which was followed by a desperate decade in the 1930s.

Ill be raising a glass to the boys of 1924 this weekend.

Der kaiser RIP

Beckenbauer died, just days after Mario Zagallo died. Two of three men to have won world cup as player and manager. I bet Didier Deschamps is being careful about what he does for the next week or so.

All three giants of the game though Beckenbauer reputation tarnished by his involvement in Germany's successful bid for 2006 world cup.

NFL play offs
at 21:15 31 Dec 2023

So the Bills have negotiated that tough run in perfectly to set up the Divisional shoot-out next week【 with the Fins.

Should be a belter...though Dolphins have been far from their best. I think the commentary on today's game at Baltimore said they only have one win against an above 500 team.

Bills struggled to see off the Patsys today but I expect both teams will be ready come next weeks game.

Any predictions DL?

Great to see some of the smaller nations taking points off the big (or bigger) boys. Kosovo, Andorra and of course North Macedonia, again. Hate to think what the score would have been if Italy had only been able to select players from North Italy😊

Hornets postponed game v Skolars now set for wednesday week. That means there will be games on Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday. Lets hope the weather is kind….the pitch is looking good…it would be a shame for combination of bad weather and over use to undo the hard work thats gone into it.

23-24 season….our best season ever
at 08:36 2 Jun 2023

1923-24 that is. Yes next season will be 100 years since we missed promotion to the second tier by a whisker.

We finished second in Division 3 north,1 point behind champions Wolves, with only the top team promoted to Division 2 .

We won more games than Wolves and the two games between in February and March both finished scoreless despite the two teams having scored 136 goals between in the rest of the season.

Dales final record was won 25 drawn 12 lost 5. The five losses were all away, to Wigan , Bradford Park Avenue, Ashington, Grimsby and Tranmere. The Tranmere game was originally played on April 10 but was abandoned with the score 2-2. It was replayed on April 28 the penultimate game of the season with Tranmere winning 2-1.

That took Dale to the last game of the season two points behind Wolves. Wolves were playing at Tranmere while Dale were at home to Accrington Stanley. Dale won 4-1 but wolves scraped another 0-0 draw and were champions. Wolves would have need to lose 6-0 for Dale to have gone up on goal.average

This is the closest we ever got to second tier football in our 102 years in the football league. Dale finished runners up again three years later but were 5 points behind champions Stoke City ( in an era of two points for a win).

History in the making
at 20:25 19 Apr 2023

The football league expanded from two divisions to include Division 3 (south) in 1920 and Division 3 (north) in 1921.

Some of the 42 teams included in these new divisions had previously been in the football league but had lost league status and were returning. But many where joining the football league for the first time.

On Saturday* (probably) or soon after we shall be the last of the new teams in Division 3(N) inaugural season to lose its league status….the end of an era. None of the original 20 teams ever made it to the top tier. 7 of the 20 teams are not currently in the EFL.

In contrast 14 of the new entrants to Division 3(S) have continuous
league status. Quite a contrast. These include 4 current premier league teams ( Brighton, Brentford, Southampton and Crystal Palace), nine who have played in the top tier at some stage (QPR, Swindon, Swansea, Watford, Millwall, Portsmouth, Northampton, Norwich, Reading) and just one never to have reached the top tier in those 103 years (Plymouth). Of the initial teams only merthyr town are not currently in the EFL.

* also Lenin’s birthday.

Nice piece on BBC sport website about him…. including a quote about him from Joe Thompson.

He was a lovely fella when he was at Dale and always related to the fans in those dark days.
Hard to believe its 47 years since he was wearing the blue shirt. where has my life gone!

Just reading through the 2022-2023 edition . It has Andrew Kelly listed as interim chairman and David Bottomley as Chief executive.

No idea where they source their information but its unfortunate that it is over a year out of date.

Anyone else see the England flag with Rochdale FC and the club crest on it during the game?

It was in the second half at the end Wallabies were attacking, draped over the second level balcony towards the left corner.

Kick ins instead of throw ins.

Couldnt they find him a good occupational therapist in the old football managers home he occupies at FIFA house? Supposedly part of a plan to speed up the game! Has he seen how long it takes to take a free kick these days.

The bloke has lost his marbles.

Think we need a fit and proper test for FIFA advisors.

Rochdale and Athens

Reading a new book on cricket journalist Neville Cardus during histime in Australia. He wasnt the country’s biggest fan and wrote to a friend “Compared with Sydney or Melbourne as far as culture and common sense go Rochdale is as Athens under Pericles”

You never hear anyone talk about Oldham in that way!
