Average age of squad
at 17:06 16 Jun 2024

In the season of 2022/23, we signed I think 12 players, 5 of them experienced and 7 youngsters. of the youngsters, Lavia obviously was a success and so was Bella Kotchap when fit and to a lesser degree Edozie.

The point is that since Sport Republic have taken over they have looked to get a balance between experienced and youngsters of varying levels of development.

This season saw the balance more heavily towards experience and so fa this window it looks to be the same.

NB not sure that Stewart can be classed a youngster, he was 27 when he signed with 180 League games to his name

Sport Republic never had a policy of just signing young players with potential, when Rasmus Ankersen was at Brentford, he signed experience as well as potential.

In 22/23 season, their first owning the club in a transfer window they signed Joe Aribo, Caleta-Car, Orsic, Onuachu & James Bree, all players in their mid to late 20's.

The season just gone saw 4 permanent signings , Lumley, Manning & Stewart were all mid 20's + only Shea Charles was a youngster,

We signed 5 players on loan, again Downes, Brookes, Fraser & Rothwell were all mid 20's + and only Harwood-Bellis was a youngster and even he 21 when he signed had around 90 League games to his name.

We signed a good balance in 22/23 in terms of age, it could be said that what let us down was not the youngsters, but the 5 experienced players.

Last season we already had a lot of youngsters in the squad, so of the 9 players who joined us in 23/24 only one was a youngster.

Every transfer signing doesn't have to be inspiring, it is about building a squad not a team, this does not mean our transfer strategy is free transfers, it means that we have a strategy that hopefully will mean a balance

Shankland Or Adams
at 13:16 14 Jun 2024

That is the question amongst Scotland fans & pundits, should it be Lawrence Shankland up front or Che Adams ?

They seem to prefer Shankland which perhaps tells us something about whether we should look to keep Adams or move on and look elsewhere.

Shankland is a soon to be 29 year old striker who up to 2022/23 season had not made much of a mark in Scotland and see sawed between the Scottish Championship & Premiership.

He has played 11 times for Scotland & scored 3 goals compared to Che's 30 caps and 6 goals, given that in his last 17 games for Scotland he has scored just twice you can see why they are going for Shankland

How many winning league games next season for SFC ?

In the period of 1970-2023 we managed 42 Premier League seasons, Pompey managed 8 !

Fact of the day no one under the age of 20 can really remember Pompey as a Premier League club, a sobering thought

Who are you voting for?

Ironically as I was reading this thread it was on the news that in one poll, (not this one) the Reform Party had overtaken the Tories.

I would also caution people to remember that 90 years ago we had Oswald Mosly and comparisons could be drawn with Farage. Mosley like Farage flitted between parties and was at one time a Labour MP.

You are right the majority of the British despise extremism to use a phrase, on both sides, hence the country turning its back on Corbyn when really Labour should have smashed the Tories back then.

Whether we like it or not it all comes down to key issues and yes the NHS is a big one, but ultimately as was the case in the last one it is going to come down to immigration .

The real problem to me is that the main parties are just lying to us and I think we have all had enough.

They all have the magic word that means they can suddenly stop the boats when everything else has failed, they all have the answer and it is simple, this morning I saw WEs Streeting telling us that Labour would recruit 8,500 Mental Health workers, where are they going to get this people from, oh yes im always walking into groups of qualified mental health workers standing on street corners with nothing else to do, this was just one thing that tickled me, Labour do not have the monopoly of pie in the sky promises.

Look across Europe and you see the rise of the right wing parties, there are dark days ahead

I havent got a clue about what each party is going to do if elected, but I know a lot about how bad each one of them is, they are all more concerned with slagging each other off than actually getting the country on track

Noel Gallagher on PL matches abroad:

“I couldn’t care less if a ManCity ‘customer’ in New Jersey wants to see a game. Get off your f***ing arse and come to Manchester, then. Why are we talking about schlepping out to Abu Dhabi for a League Cup final, FA Cup finals in Bangkok?"

“It [football] will change drastically in the next decade and, 20 years from now, it will be unrecognisable. Once there are 14 American owners in the PL, it’s over. They will vote for no relegation. There will be rule changes and all sorts of mad s***..."

"Honestly, the Americanisation of football is not good for the game. It will be a slow erosion. And we are going to be powerless to stop them..."

Mara is not my mate, I just feel some sympathy for him, in that he has tried his best for the club and get slagged off with all the old cliches, whilst Broja showed no sort of fondness for the club in any way shape or form and couldnt be bothered playing in the final game of the season, yet is held up as some sort of Southampton legend.

Yes a successful season at Vitesse, 10 goals but as he approaches 23, he has spent his career chasing money not glory, prefers to stay at Chelsea and earn big money but rarely play and when he goes to us or Fulham does very little

Adam Lallana who gave us 7 good seasons and stayed loyal when we went into League one is berated and sneered at now because he wanted to play for a big club, Ok it wasn't the best way to leave, but no one could not accuse him of not giving us good service.

Yet Broja is some sort of cult hero for scoring just 6 goals, Che Adams got 7 that season no one saw that as a good return

Very wise words, the problem for some is football is all about emotion and it is hard to look at it without that emotion taking over.

It could just be the media putting two and two together as Broja has worked with Hassenhuttl or it could just be that Hassenhuttl thinks he has changed and needs to drop down to a league where he won't be playing top defences week in week out

Seems he is linked with a reunion with Ralph Hasenhuttl at Wolfsburg, but on high wages at Chelsea and still with 4 years left on his contract its likely to be only a loan.

Interesting to note that as he approaches 23 he still only has 66 Premier League games and 16 goals to his name, 32 of those games were for Saints

I dont think we were ever really serious and he was on loan at Brondby all last season, so this was done and dusted fairly quickly
